文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了与朋友设定界限的方法。

2 . Setting boundaries (界限) with people, especially those you care about, can be difficult. You may feel guilty about doing so, but there’s no need to. You won’t be able to care for others if you can’t care for yourself.     1

Offer alternatives (选择) to what they want.

You may have a friend who wants to come over and stay all day. Being a good friend doesn’t mean doing everything they want you to do. You have every right to decide what you feel comfortable with.     2     However, you can offer alternatives. You can say, “It’s OK to come over, but only one hour is available.”

Tell your friend you’ll help, but you expect help, too.

You may find that you are always asked for help but never receive any in return.     3     For example, if your friend always asks for a lift, you could say, “I don’t mind taking you places, but I’ll need some gas money if this is going to continue.”

    4

Let them know you’ll be there for them with conditions. Some “friends” want to use up all you’ve got, but never offer anything in return.     5     These are “friends” you don’t need, and you’ll need to let them know now. Offer a warning about boundary violations to let your friend know when they occur. You might say, “Hey, you failed to keep an appointment as arranged and that wasn’t cool.”

A.Give a warning.
B.Do some helpful acts.
C.You don’t have to cut them off completely.
D.They may borrow things from you but refuse to return the favor.
E.Setting up boundaries gives you a chance to practice this self-care.
F.They may constantly borrow things from you but refuse to return the favor.
G.Let your friends know that you expect the same amount of help that you give.

3 . Almost all kids pretend their dolls can talk or that their toys possess magical powers.    1    A study conducted by researchers at the University of Oregon found that by age 7, 37 percent of children had an invisible friend. In fact, imaginary companions are quite common in many people’s childhood.

And while there’s nothing wrong with kids who don’t have imaginary friends, children who have imaginary companions shouldn’t be a cause for concern either.

    2

Some research indicates that kids with imaginary friends are more likely to be firstborn or only children, but that doesn’t mean imaginary friends are just for kids who are lonely. In fact, studies show kids who have imaginary friends are quite social and creative.

3    On the contrary, they can be a tool that kids use to cope with their troubles. Kids who have experienced trauma (精神创伤),for example, may rely on imaginary companions to help them through times.

While some parents worry that the invention of an imaginary friend means a child doesn’t have any real friends, imaginary friends don’t indicate a lack of social skills.    4

Talking to an imaginary friend can even improve a child’s communication skills.    5    Consequently, studies show kids with imaginary friends may be better at understanding a listener or observer’s perspective.

A.That’s not to say you need to stop their communication soon.
B.Imaginary friends usually aren’t a sign that a child is troubled.
C.It’s OK to be concerned about the imaginary friend by asking, “Who is he?”
D.In fact, some studies show there are many benefits to having imaginary friends.
E.But some kids take their dramatic play a step further and invent an imaginary friend.
F.They can actually serve as a safe way to practice such skills, like solving conflict and sharing.
G.Engaging in dialogue with an imaginary friend requires a child to take on the friend’s perspective.

5 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

This is a story about two teenagers who were direct opposites but were inseparable.

No one could really understand how Mack and Zack could be such good friends. They were direct opposites in every way—from the top of their heads to the tips of their toes. That is to say, they have not the least similarities. They were labeled the inseparable by anyone who knew both of them or their common friends.

They first met when they were in Grade One. It was not one of those dramatic meetings but ordinary and boring. Both were eyeing the second seat in the middle row in the classroom.

Both rushed for the chair but another giant classmate put himself into it. So they looked at each other, shrugged their shoulders indifferently and placed themselves on either side of the giant. However, the class teacher immediately rearranged their seating positions. As fate would have it, Mack and Zack found themselves seated beside each other.

Physically, Mack was thin and long. He looked lack of nutrition (营养)but actually he quite could eat. On the other hand, Zack was fat and strong and ate like a bird.

Mack was a bookworm and a star student whereas Zack was an easy-going student who struggled to go through his schoolwork. Mack enjoyed teaching Zack and Zack found himself responding well to Mack's teaching.

Mack was a dreamer and was quiet and cool, unlike Zack who was talkative and outgoing. Mack listened while Zack chattered. Mack could be seen laughing quietly with Zack playing around and the life and soul of any gathering.

Despite their differences, there was an invisible harmony (和谐)between them. Anyone who saw all this couldn't help but wonder how it happened that between these two teenagers there was a silent unspoken understanding. That's all because of Mack's selfless deed that touched Zack.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Amy and I had been best friends since primary school and spent almost every day with each other. Sometimes, other children said we were no fun because we were both very academic(学术的) and liked to study, but we liked it that way. Both of us were very hard-working and always got good grades at school.

I thought we would be like this forever, however, our friendship was on the rocks recently.

One Monday, we had a surprise math quiz. I thought it was quite easy and was not worried about the results.

I must have sounded very proud of myself after the quiz, saying how easy it was and how I was sure to get a good grade. And many classmates looked at me with admiration.

The next day after class, my math teacher told me that I had the lowest grade in the class! I felt so ashamed and couldn’t believe it; I must be really stupid to fail a simple math quiz!

Afterwards, I pretended to be cheerful and greeted others with a smile as usual, but Amy sensed something was wrong.

We went to wash our hands in the girls’ washroom before lunch. She patted me on the shoulder and asked me what happened. Seeing her concerned look, I had to admit how badly I had done in the math quiz. I begged her not to tell anyone else, and couldn’t help sobbing (啜泣). She held me tightly, saying she would keep my secret, and cheered me up.

However, the next day, I noticed that my classmates were staring at me as I came into math class, when I went to sit down, I was shocked to find a piece of paper on my desk that said, “...Stupid Sarah got a D!” I was so upset that I felt like crying.

NEVER STOP WALKING

When Justin was 7, he suffered from a disease that led to problems with the development of his back. Over the years, the little boy had gone through a total of five corrective surgeries. Justin could no longer walk and was limited to a wheelchair. But this did not stop him from living a normal life thanks to his mother’ S love and others’ help.

After entering high school, Justin got interested in playing the trumpet (小号) and joined the school’s band. He served as one of the band’s trumpeters and developed a strong friendship with his partner Tom. As Thanksgiving Day approached, the band intended to perform in the Thanksgiving Day Parade and every member had the chance to join in, including Justin. However, there was one obvious problem. Justin could not control his wheelchair and play the trumpet at the same time. The band director put forward an idea of one student pushing Justin during his marches. Tom immediately volunteered even though it meant he had to give up the opportunity to play his own instrument during the parade.“I do it just to make sure Justin knows that he always has a place in the band, and he always will,“ Tom said to their director secretly. From then on, the two practiced together, one playing the instrument and the other pushing the wheelchair with the rhythm of the music.

To help Justin, Tom sacrificed (牺牲) far beyond expectation. Apart from losing the chance to perform, he needed to spare more time to take care of Justin and even missed his football training several times. All of these were seen by Justin and the burden of guilt weighed heavily on his mind.“I can’t meet my own needs at the sacrifice of Tom’s chance. It is time to find a solution.” Justin thought to himself as his mother pushed him on the way home. His mother lowered her head and said,“Justin, play me your new tune.” Justin took out his trumpet and was about to play when an excellent idea came to him.

After I stepped into the school library, I went straight to the shelves filled with books at once. It was break time and I had dropped by the library to borrow a book. Just as I was looking through some books, a girl in my class, Alice, came up to me. Alice was a pain in the neck as she would often make fun of others. That day, Alice laughed at me about my deepest secret -that I had come last in class in the mid-year examinations.

I blushed(脸红)hotly in shame. At the same time, I became extremely angry. My best friend, Lynn, was the only one who knew my secret. How could she betray(背叛)me?

My anger grew as thoughts about my friendship with Lynn flashed through my mind. We had been good friends since Primary 1. We hung out together, studied together and stayed up till the early hours of the morning to exchange our dreams. We were closer than sisters. When she needed a shoulder to cry on, I would be there. How could she do this to me? I was so mad that I could not control myself.

Brushing aside Alice’s taunts(嘲弄), I stormed to the place where Lynn usually went - the school field. Lynn looked at me with a welcoming smile on her face. The sight of her treacherous(背信弃义的)face made me mad and crazy.

“How could you do this to me? I thought we were friends!” I shouted at Lynn. “I hate you!”

A look of bewilderment(迷茫)crossed her face as she said,

“Wha ... What’s wrong? What did I do?”

Lynn cried out but I was cold and I didn’t show any kindness to her at all. I told her, “You are no longer my friend!”

And then I stormed away and returned to the library to calm myself down.

10 . How to Cheer up Your Friend

The following tips will make your friend cheer up. Try one or more of the suggestions below, and hopefully your friend will be happy again in no time.

1    .   If your friend is angry about a situation at work, help her see the positive side of things. Hear out her problem before reacting (回应). But try to help her asking questions such as, “What things can you do to make the situation better?” or “What’s been happening at work lately that’s been good?”

Send her a card or postcard. Not many people get handwritten notes any more. It’s so rare (稀少的), in fact, that it’s certain to put a smile on her face. Drop a note in the mail to her.    2

Build up her sellf-esteem (自尊). Everyone needs to hear they are smart, strong, and beautiful sometimes.     3    , as they can help her build confidence and self-esteem. Try to make your praise unique to the person, so she knows you truly mean what you say.

Try out new things together. True happiness is in part about the adventure. It may mean you may need to step outside of what’s comfortable and try something new.     4    If you want your friends to be happy, encourage them to try new things with you.

Bring her one of her favorite treats.    5    . Maybe she can’t live without an afternoon coffee,or maybe she has a special love for black forest cake. Surprise her by bringing one of them to her when you know she’s having a rough day.
