文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了几种感激我们的朋友的支持和帮助的有效方法。

2 . Friends are the family you choose. They may even be in a similar life stage as you are.    1    Here are some ways you can thank friends for their unconditional support.

It’s always nice to take time to reflect on the people you know and think of how they’ve changed your life. Take a moment to write down all the things you appreciate about your friend. You can send it to your friend in an email or go the old-fashioned route and put pen to paper.    3

3.Listen to the response

Part of what we love about our friends is how much they’re there for us in times of need. Friends are often sounding boards and unpaid therapists(治疗师).    4    .Your friends may be facing the same kinds of uncertainty and anxiety that you are right now. As much as you may need to express, you need to listen and empathize, too.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是一个理想的朋友所拥有的特征。

3 . Defining what an ideal friend is like is not an easy task.     1     However, generally speaking, there are certain qualities that most people would consider as characteristics of an ideal friend.

The ideal friend knows how to show weakness. The ideal friends don’t try to prove how successful they are.     2     They show how much they trust us by admitting failings and sorrows. They offer us the gift of their vulnerability (脆弱).

3     More often than it’s comfortable to admit, we don’t quite know what we think until a proper friend gently asks us to expand on a thought, to explain why we’re impressed by it and to find good answers to possible objections. They see the potential in what we’re saying when we can’t.

The proper friend helps build our self-understanding. There are so many things we don’t entirely comprehend about who we are. We find it hard to pin down our goals.     4     We might have some strong opinions, but it can be difficult to explain really why these ideas matter to us. The right friend listens and helps us piece together the best account of our fears and excitements.

They help us to like ourselves. Normally we’re intently alive to our own shortcomings; it’s more obvious, from our point of view, what’s disappointing about us than what’s attractive. We need a friend because we’re likely to be so very unfriendly towards ourselves.     5

A.A true friend helps us think.
B.We get defensive and we don’t really know why.
C.Loyalty is a common quality given to ideal friends.
D.The good friend likes us in ways we’re not easily able to.
E.Everyone has their own understanding of what the ideal friend is like.
F.On the contrary, they let us know embarrassing things about themselves.
G.They care for your well-being over any issues that may arise between you and them.

Missy was absolutely my best friend in the whole world. We had known each other since first grade, and we literally did everything together. We frequently visited each other’s homes, we knew each other’s families like they were our own. The interesting thing about our relationship, however the fact was that the older we got, the more our values seemed to differ. We still enjoyed a lot of the same things, but I was a bit more settled while she loved being associated with popular people and things. Although she was basically a good person, she had no problem with forcing things to go her way.

Perhaps this is why it seemed that her family actually trusted me more than they trusted her. So, on the day when Missy showed up at my house with a huge dent (凹痕) in her father’s car, I knew that we were in for a troublesome time.

She had banged the car into a tree while out that day, and she knew her father was going to have an explanation. So she stopped by my house in order to make up a story that would lessen her father’s rage. Missy decided to tell him that while in a parking lot, someone must have backed into the car and dented it. Looking at the dent with some crashed leaves and bark still sticking there, I attempted to perish (打消) her thought. “I don’t think your father will buy it.” “ Don’t worry,” she insisted,“even if my dad doesn’t trust me, he’ll trust you.” My role was to confirm for her. Now keep in mind that I had strong objections to lying and I wanted absolutely nothing to do with the situation. I loved her parents just like my own, and I did not want to be a party to this lie that Missy was creating. Nevertheless, after much request and a general questioning of my loyalty to our friendship, I decided that the least I could do was to act as a silent witness. That way, I wasn’t actually lying; I just wasn’t telling the full truth.

Fiona and I had been classmates since kindergarten. She was always wherever I was and she was always ahead of me. Dance performance needed a big finish? Fiona was picked. Selling cookies for charity? “Oh, I’m sorry,” the lady living next door to me would say, “I just bought twenty boxes from Fiona. Such a nice girl.” And the school plays? Fiona would have the leads while I was cast as her mother or neighbor. I even played her dog once. Yeah, whatever.

Then the day of the choir concert audition(面试) came. We waited while Ms. Jones called us one at a time into the choir room. When Ms. Jones got to the C’s, my heart sped up each time she came to the door. By the time she actually called my name, my whole body was shaking. When I came back, Fiona smiled at me. Ms. Jones called her name and Fiona followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her audition was over.

When Ms. Jones made the announcement of who had made the special choir group, I wasn’t surprised when Fiona’s name was on the list and mine wasn’t. “So,” I said under my breath, “what else is new?”

Sudden clapping brought me out of my thought. Everyone was looking at me. I must have missed something here. Ms. Jones walked towards me and said, “Celia, you will have to start practicing with me. The lead singer takes extra preparation.” Lead singer? I got the lead singer? I glanced over at Fiona. She smiled and gave me the thumbs-up sign. She was always so nice.

Now the big day had come. We stepped onto the stage and took our places. I was front and center. Ms. Jones raised her baton (指挥棒) and we began to sing. The spotlight flashed over me and then circled me in its bright light. Ms. Jones nodded and pointed her baton at me. That baton must have shot out a secret ray because I froze right there on the spot.

“I want a friend!” my five-year-old’s clear blue eyes showed the pain of rejection. Noah is deaf, and the past couple of years have begun to show what the future holds for my little guy.

The first few years of his life, Noah had many friends in our neighborhood. Small children don’t talk a lot and are content to simply play. As time passed and Noah got to the age where speech and hearing were a noticeable part of “hanging out”, his friends started realizing he was different. Soon, no one came to play with my tiny son, and he too began to understand he was different. My heart has ached, and I have spent endless hours in tears, begging God to send him a friend. But the children at school come from everywhere, and none live near enough to “hang out” .

Noah recently began the heartbreaking hobby of writing and leaving mail on the porch (门廊) for his “friends” . He sticks his own toys to the notes, thinking that he can somehow make friends this way. I often have to retrieve (取回) his notes so that he thinks someone is getting his messages of friendship. His excited trips to the front porch the next morning would sometimes net him a feeling of having an unseen pen pal. It breaks my heart.

But today was different. I got a miracle—in fact, three of them.

My phone rang, and I was distracted with a long-distance friend, catching up with each other’s lives without noticing Noah slipping out the front door. It wasn’t until Nick, my sixteen-year-old son came home for lunch that Noah’s absence was known. Panic-stricken, Nick and I searched the house, yard, and garage ... no Noah.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要介绍了朋友的意义。

8 . It doesn’t matter if you have one friend or 20,because there are only a few people in this world that can make you truly happy. For me,my family and my three best girlfriends mean everything to me.

Some days I didn’t want to go to school because I felt so disappointed in myself but I don’t regret a thing. It makes you stronger as a person, and if you are able to mend your friendships like I have done, then you can do anything.

My mom always told me,“Stephanie, remember that a friend is a gift that you give yourself. A friend will make you laugh and be there for the good and the bad. A true friend will never make fun of you. If a friend is a piece of work, then he or she has never been a friend at all. A friend is the biggest gift to yourself.”

Everyone is going to make mistakes but please don't push them away, especially if it’s someone you really care about. I know when I make a mistake I beat myself up about it. I just wish someone would have reached out a hand to help me back up on my feet like my best friends did. If someone is new or doesn't have a friend, please reach out and befriend them because that small action could mean the world to them. Now that I’m older,I understand what my mom has been trying to tell me,and now I know that the friends that I choose will also be the kinds of friends that I would want to be surrounded by forever.

“Here you go,” Melanie said, handing Ava a pink envelope.

“Thanks.” Ava said. “But what is it?”

“An invitation to my pool party. It’s Saturday at two. There will be a lot of fun things to do. You are going to love it so much. Do come, please.” Melanie kept talking but Ava wasn’t listening.

The words “pool party” echoed (回响) through her mind. Ava had a secret she didn’t even tell her best friend Melanie — Ava couldn’t swim. Every time she tried to learn, she’d wind up with water up her nose and she’d be out of the pool as quickly as possible.

“You’re coming, right?” Melanie said

“Huh?” Ava jumped.

“Do you think you could come a little early? I could use your help inflating (使充气) the floating basketball hoops (篮筐) and the ball. And I will need you to help me set the tables.”

Ava didn’t know what to say. Melanie was one of her best friends. She couldn’t miss her party. But she didn’t want the whole school to find out she couldn’t swim. That would be too embarrassing. “I think I might be busy this Saturday,” Ava said, lowering her head. She saw the disappointment on Melanie’s face. “Maybe I could stop by for a little while, but I definitely wouldn’t have time to swim.”

Ava spent the rest of the school day trying to avoid Melanie’s questions about what she had to do on Saturday and why she couldn’t stay for the whole party. Ava felt awful. That night she asked her parents to ground her or make other plans so she couldn’t go to Melanie’s party.

“Ava, this is silly,” her mother said. “Melanie is your best friend. She won’t care that you can’t swim.” Ava wasn’t so sure.

“Just be honest with Melanie. She will understand you,” her father said.

There were once two boys who were very good friends. Their names were Arman and Batoor. Arman and Batoor would always play together after school on the basketball court close to where they lived.

One day, two bullies came to the basketball court, and one of the bullies stole their basketball. “This is ours now,” said a bully.

“And you are never getting it back,” said the other bully.

Then the bullies started pushing the two boys and Arman fell down and suddenly became very frightened. Without thinking, the young boy jumped to his feet and ran home without once looking back to see if his friend Batoor was also able to run away.

But Batoor was not so lucky, and anyway, he did not like being bullied and refused to run away. But the boys were bigger and stronger than Batoor and they hit him and kicked him.

“That will teach you,” said the bullies. And with that, the bullies walked away, leaving poor Batoor to walk home alone.

The next day, when Arman met Batoor in the playground at school, he was very sorry when he saw what the bullies had done to his good friend.

“I cannot believe you ran away and left me all alone!” said Batoor. “What kind of a friend acts like that?” Although Arman tried to apologise, Batoor was very angry and did not want to forgive his friend.

Arman felt terrible about running away, and now he had lost his best friend because of his actions.

Batoor’s mother bought him a new basketball, and because the boy decided not to have his life ruled over by bullies, he returned to the basketball court the following day and played alone.

Just as he was practising, he heard a voice behind him.

“I see we are going to have to teach you another lesson,” said the voice. “And I see that you have another basketball for us to take,” said the other.

And when Batoor turned around, sure enough, the two bullies were walking towards him. “Now hand over that basketball and we won’t beat you so badly this time.”

Just as Batoor was about to protest, another voice rang out loud and clear across the basketball court.
