4 . My first job at KCRW was Ruth Seymour’s assistant. Soon after, I became Assistant General Manager and worked closely with her for 16 years. Therefore, I have had the opportunity to observe her and the enormous impact she had on KCRW and the other radio stations.
Ruth did nothing conventionally and nothing she created was a reaction to anything. She created KCRW not to gain the most listeners or to win any awards but to be an intellectual force for arts, culture and smart ideas. She wanted to start the conversation, not just contribute to it.
Ruth had the highest artistic standards, which is why KCRW aired radio dramas like the 10-hour Babbitt and 30-hour Ulysses. She created Jewish Short Stories From Eastern Europe and Beyond in two audio collections that featured famous actors reading the work of Jewish authors like Sholem Aleichem, Philip Roth and Isaac Bashevis Singer. KCRW sold more of those collections than anything else in our history.
Ruth went to a newsstand every day and read articles from New York Times, word for word, on the air at noon because ordinary people couldn’t easily get that paper then. She discovered people who matched her intellect at dinners or parties and gave them on-air shows on journalism, literature, film, art, theater, travel, dance or music.
She said it best, “I wanted to do the program as an act of love and respect.”
When she came to KCRW in 1977, she found herself building the station in a junior high classroom right off the playground. Now KCRW could be heard across Los Angeles. Most powerfully, the radio format (总体安排) she created continues to be used by radio stations — news of the day, debates of ideas, art, artists, food, literature and film.
Outspoken and fearless women leaders were rare in the 1960s and 1970s — in fact, women couldn’t get credit cards apart from their husbands until 1974 — which is why her achievements are so singular.

I worked as a mailman. I loved this job. Each day I delivered things like college acceptances and birthday presents. “These are things that could all make some’s day,” I thought.
On an ordinary afternoon of Thursday, I walked in a block and delivered packages as usual. Children were playing in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way. I turned up the next walkway. The lady who lived there opened the door wide. “Hello,” she said. I knew what she was waiting for. “I’ve got your book club selection,” I said, handing over her package.
There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years I had gotten to know most of them. Mrs. Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping Network almost every day. She was an older lady. And I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery.
After a long time of walking and delivering in the block, I finally reached the house of Mrs. Dorman. I dug in my bag for Mrs. Dorman’s mails-and the inevitable Home Shopping Network package. She’d be glad to get this. Mrs. Dorman waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk.
But Mrs. Dorman wasn’t at the door today. I heard the TV going inside so I knew she was home. “She was probably watching her shopping shows,” I thought. I fit all the envelopes into her mailbox, then bent down to put the package by the door.
I froze. What was that? Something like a cry. I approached closer to the door. “Mrs. Dorman?” I called. There was no answer. But that same weak cry came again. “Hello?” I tried to open the door, but it was locked. So I pressed my ear against the door. This time I clearly heard words, “Help me. I was injured by accident...”

While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.
