A New Addition to the Family

For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him. Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.

However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.

Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria(细菌) being in the outside world too often.

Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是家庭菜园对健康和幸福有益的原因。

2 . Having a vegetable garden offers many health benefits. Here are reasons why a home vegetable garden beats even the farmers’ market when it comes to your health and well-being.

    1    .

Gardening is very physical. What makes gardening better than a gym workout is that it happens outdoors with fresh air and sunshine. Whether you are weeding in the down- ward dog position, or digging bags of soil, a garden delivers the full gym experience, from cardio right down to yoga.

Your garden provides you with a raw diet. Most homegrown crops taste better than store-bought, but no vegetable takes this to the next level like sweet peas.     2    , but most gardeners find that even a few vines (藤) are worth the space. A handful of freshly-shelled, raw sweet peas bursting into your mouth on a summer morning have few rivals in the food kingdom.

    3    .

The average consumer remains at the mercy of the produce buyer at the local market, but once the home gardener discovers the diversity of colors and tastes that can be homegrown, a nutrient-rich vegetable choice opens up. Heirloom (原种的) tomatoes range in color from deep purple and nearly black to golden yellow and pale white. Besides the color, there is another benefit.     4     .

Your garden allows you to give.     5    , but nothing feels as great as when you share food. Imagine how it feels for others to receive fresh homegrown vegetables. A basket of heir- loom cherry tomatoes can disappear faster than a box of donuts deep fried in fat.

A.It’s nice to receive gifts
B.We know that it feels good to give
C.Your garden lets you eat the rainbow
D.The vegetable garden makes you a chef
E.Growing vegetables helps you take exercise
F.Experts may not recommend sweet peas for small gardens
G.Nutritionists agree that colorful vegetables are rich in nutrition

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,作者描述了一家人如何度过了没有电的一天。

8 . I woke to the sound of birds outside my window and lay in bed, going over the busy day ahead of me. Finally, I got up and attempted to switch on the light — nothing happened. I checked my phone. No Wi-Fi, no data. With our unstable cell service, there was no way of knowing if we had received alerts fbr a power failure. I grabbed a sweater, went downstairs, found a flashlight and a match to light the gas stove, and then boiled water to brew coffee. Outside the window, the falling snow obscured (遮蔽) the sunrise. Deep piles of snow covered the road.

My work meetings and deadlines, my sons’ classes and tests, my husband’s plans — everything would have to wait. Why does this happen today of all days?“ I asked. Thankfully, the wood stove was still going strong. I took a deep breath. I supposed we had everything we needed.

The house was quiet as I sipped my coffee and cuddled (搂抱) our dog. One by one, my husband and sons came downstairs and complained about the turn the day had taken.

I opened the curtains to let light in. We gathered around the table and had cereal. After breakfast, my husband played a game of solitaire. Then my sons joined him in building a house of cards that reached three levels until our cat jumped up to investigate and knocked it down. We played a round of Scrabble and had my favorite snow day lunch: grilled cheese and tomato soup.

Then we took a long walk in the woods behind our house, walking along the stream. We spotted deer tracks and played in the snow that was coming down in big fluffy flakes. When we returned, all the clocks in the house were blinking. I started to make dinner, happy to have things back to normal — even better than normal.

It was a day that began without electricity, cut off from the rest of the world, and ended with hot chocolate and power restored. We were recharged by the unexpected gift of a day together.

1. What did the author find when she woke up?
A.Heavy snow trapped the family in the house.
B.The electricity supply had been cut off.
C.It was still early for breakfast.
D.Her phone wouldn’t be turned on.
2. What was the direct impact of the power cut on the author’s family?
A.Their arrangements were upset.
B.They had to serve themselves with simple meals.
C.The family encountered a shortage of supplies.
D.Everyone was angry about this unexpected event.
3. Why did the author describe their family activities on that day?
A.To pave the way for her insight.
B.To present the daily life of the family.
C.To show the close family relationship.
D.To create a lighthearted atmosphere.
4. What did that day mean to the author?
A.It was a temporary disaster.
B.It was a day full of exciting adventures.
C.It was a lovely day of family togetherness.
D.It was a rare moment of leisure and freedom.

9 . Cook in the kitchen

Earlier last month, my parents and I had a free day — a rare event for us.     1

For our weekend menu, we decided to make smoked pork. I found this recipe online. It looked interesting and the steps were simple. So we decided to make it for dinner one weekend.

First, according to the recipe, the pork needed to be salted. The process would take a long time.     2     Mom first thawed (解冻) the pork and then spread salt, sugar and pepper or the surface, After that, she wrapped the pork in a plastic film (塑料薄膜) and refrigerated it for two days.

3     To make smoked dishes indoors, we needed to use aluminum foil (铝箔). After searching for it for a long time, we finally found the foil in the cupboard.

After that, Dad was responsible for slicing (切片) the pork, Mother was responsible for preparing the ingredients (佐料). I was responsible for spreading the black tea and sugar for smoking on the aluminum foil and then a layer of baking paper.     4     After more than ten minutes of smoking and a few minutes of frying, the smoked pork was complete.

5     When combined with an apple vinegar sauce, the meat was even more delicious.

A.It was easy for me to make the food.
B.Pork is the main meat source of our food.
C.We decided to cook together in the kitchen.
D.Finally, I put the pork on the smoking shelf.
E.So, Mom started working on it early the night before.
F.Two days later, the pork was ready for the next steps.
G.The pork was very delicious and contained the special smell of black tea.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When David was nine and Laura was twelve, the battles started. Before that, they got along great. Laura was always protective of her little brother, and he in turn, was very fond of her.

Maybe it was about needing space or demanding independence. Whatever the reason was, it drove my husband and me crazy. It would start over the smallest of excuses. One minute the house would be quiet, and the next they’d be shouting at one another. And on and on it would go. Until, finally, one of us would have to step in. And there would be a truce...sort of. At least until the next fight. Our once happy home was being turned into a war area.

One night, in hopelessness, we called the kids into the living room and told them how upsetting their behavior was. We asked them for ideas about how we could regain peace in the family.

We asked each of them to come up with a half dozen appropriate results that we could apply the next time they had a fight.

The following day we were presented with a list of results from each. Some even looked pretty good. Examples: Clean the other person’s room; Do the dishes for the other person; Hug and make up, etc.

We decided to arrange those results around the edge of a board, and then we attached a spinning arrow in the middle. When you gave it a spin, the arrow would finally stop and point to one of the results. Then we hung the board up in the kitchen. We crossed our fingers, and waited.

It was amazing. Just the existence of the board, hanging on our kitchen wall, had an immediate calming effect on the atmosphere in our home. But it only took about ten days before peace was destroyed by another battle. So we called them both into the kitchen.
