1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Penny’s Present

The sun was shining when Penny woke up. Usually she jumped out of bed with a happy smile for the new day. But today she just lay there frowning (皱眉).

This was the day before Mother’s Day, and Penny still had no present for Mama. She had forgotten about Mother’s Day until she had heard her brother Peter and sister Elizabeth talking last night. “I made Mama an apron (围裙) in sewing class,” Elizabeth had said proudly.

“What are you going to give Mama?” Peter asked Penny. Penny had not answered. She had ducked her head, ashamed to admit that she had spent her pocket money. She had nothing at all to give Mama on her special day.

Penny got out of bed and dressed slowly. The bag of candies she had bought yesterday reminded her of her terrible mistake.

“Well, here’s our littlest sleepyhead,” Mama said as Penny walked into the kitchen. She gave her a good-morning hug, and the smell of baked apples floated up from her apron. In a way, that made Penny feel worse because it reminded her of all the good things Mama did for her.

She remembered a hot day last summer when Mama had spent a whole afternoon making strawberry jam, because she knew Penny liked it. She thought of the moment when Mama polished her shoes and taught her to cut and arrange flowers. Sometimes she also taught Penny to make paper flowers with colorful petals (花瓣).

“Penny dear, can you eat a little faster?” Mama was talking to her. With surprise Penny noticed that everyone else had finished breakfast.

“I’m sorry, Mama.”

“Well, finish up. I have to visit old Mrs. Logan and read for her. But first, I want to get this kitchen cleaned up.” Penny watched her mother hurriedly cleaning up the kitchen. Mama was a very busy person. It seemed to Penny that sometimes Mama could use an extra pair of hands and two more feet. Suddenly she had an idea! There was a present she could give Mama, and it might be better than anything she could buy.

3 . Why are Chores Important for Children to Do?

You might hold back from assigning your children chores because they already have their hands full with homework and school activities.     1     Consider the benefits of chores.

You’ve often heard that a “family that prays together, stays together”, right?     2     When you and your children work together for the greater good of the family, you’ll draw closer together. Assigning your children chores show that you’re all working toward the same goal-drawing closer together as a family.

3     In fact, being involved at home helps them to thrive at school. It teaches self-discipline. They’ ll be better able to manage their time properly and deal with difficult situations. This helps them to handle school and household chores and put them in their proper place. It allows them to be balanced and prioritize what’s really important-contributing to the development of their family.

The best way to teach children how to appreciate what they have is to give them age-appropriate household chores. They’ll also learn to sympathize with you and learn what’s involved in making a home.     4     When you ensure that they have a hand in keeping the home organized and clean, they’ll appreciate and understand the sacrifices and hard work you put in at home daily.

When you assign your children age-appropriate household chores, you’re teaching them to be responsible. You won’t always be around to wash the dishes or set the table for them. They’ll have to assume that responsibility on their own, perhaps after leaving home. As a child growing up, you likely learned how to do things around the home from your parents.     5

A.Chores give them a sense of purpose and usefulness.
B.Doing household chores influence your child’s maturity.
C.The same applies when handling chores around the home.
D.Wouldn’t it be nice to pass on those skills to your children?
E.That’s understandable, but household chores can benefit your children.
F.It takes effort, time, and resources to do all the things around the home.
G.Children learn to cherish only with the experience of doing chores at home.

5 . Anyone who has messy children, lazy partners or naughty flat mates will be impressed by the resourcefulness (足智多谋) of Katrina Neathey, the co-owner of a cleaning company in West Sussex. She has made her three teenagers sign an agreement to help keep the house tidy. Any infraction of the agreement, for example, littering up their bedroom with magazines and drinks, or failing to put their dirty plates in the dishwasher, will come with a 5 pounds’ fine on removal of their phones.

It is one way of setting up a cleaning rota (轮班表) that people might stick to. “Cleaning is teamwork.” says Lynsey Crombie, also known as the Queen of Clean. She suggests getting everyone in the household together to find out what people like doing. “In our family, my husband is better at mowing the lawn. I love cleaning rooms. Someone else might like folding the towels. You let everybody do what they’re good at, or enjoy, so there’s more chance they’ll actually do it.”

Crombie is not a fan of fines. For her children, she takes away their phones or turns off the Wi-Fi. For other adults who aren’t joining in, she suggests keeping asking them to take action.

If you aren’t sure what is required to keep the dirt at bay, there are many checklists online that you can print out to share the daily, weekly and monthly tasks. You can stick it on the fridge, and then everyone knows where they stand. If it’s not working, have another chat, such as “What do you dislike?” “How can we improve it?” Ironing out problems is all about communication.

1. What does the underlined word "infraction" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Change.B.Violation.
C.Explanation.D.Discussion.
2. How does Crombie encourage her family to enjoy their tasks?
A.By dividing tasks in terms of interest.B.By sticking to the cleaning rota strictly.
C.By setting up a role model herself.D.By offering the family timely help.
3. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Fines work well among adults.B.Ways to motivate people vary.
C.It’s hard to push adults to take charge.D.It’s good to remind people of their tasks.
4. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A.To advertise a great cleaning company in West Sussex.
B.To encourage people to develop teamwork spirit at home.
C.To call on housewives to handle lazy partners resourcefully.
D.To introduce ways of inspiring family to share housework.
