It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o’clock.Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings,“Good morning, my Dear!”Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.

Joan’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard.Born in a not-rich family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students throughout the academic career and actively involved in school activities. They became the pride of the school and the envy of the students.

“Good morning, Dad, what’s up?”Joan said in an easy tone.“I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”

Hearing her father’s words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn’t been mopped(拖地) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.

Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement.“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Mike up.We will give Mum a surprise !”

Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs. He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.

Unfortunately, in the summer vacation before senior high school, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry. I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.

One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!

I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad, my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and admitted, “Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster. I don’t want to disappoint him, so I went to the store and bought some vegetables.” My mother smiled, saying, “Honey, you know what is the right thing to do.”

Paragraph 1

My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One morning in the autumn when I was nine, Mom asked me to do some yard work with her. She had grown some potatoes in our yard that spring. It was time to harvest (收获). She wanted me to help her dig the potatoes. “Do I have to?” I said unhappily.

“Yes,you do,” Mom gave an answer. Then she added, “Change your attitude and it'll be easier.” “That's what you think,” I thought to myself. I sat on the sofa watch TV. Soon Mom wouldn't wait any longer and ordered me to follow her.

Worried that she'd be angry, I walked slowly out. I was unwillingly to move my feet—almost as though there were magnets (磁铁) fixed to them and the ground was metal. Or it felt like my socks were filled with wet sand. Or maybe my feet just stuck to the ground.

Following Mom's instructions, I picked up a shovel and started to work. I needed to be careful when digging up potatoes, otherwise I would damage them. The damaged potatoes would easily rot (腐烂). I pushed the shovel into the earth slowly and lifted the earth onto one side. When that was done, potatoes came out. Then I had to use my hands to free the potatoes from below. After that I placed them into a basket. It was really dirty and boring.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I was about to give up the work when Mom's words came to my mind.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When I was eight years old, my seven—year—old cousin, Juliana, got sick. My brother and I were in the family room watching television when my mom came in to tell us the bad news. I wasn’t really sure what a heart operation meant, but I could tell it wasn’t a good thing. Juliana’s family was on a tight budget (预算), so was mine. My parents’ faces were full of worry and tears, and that was enough to make me cry, too.

When we went to see Juliana in the hospital, she was lying in bed,and she had tubes (管子) and other things hooked to her. It was confusing and scary.

The treatments continued, but Juliana was weaker and weaker. Every time I visited her, it was hard for me to believe her change. She seemed to lose all her strength and her lovely face turned pale. She lost a lot of weight even though she had proper food. As a child, I really couldn’t understand what the doctors were doing to her—it seemed like they were making her feel worse not better.

Seeing my cousin in so much pain made me feel like my own heart was aching. Something needed to be done. I knew I wanted to help her get better faster, but at eight years old, I wasn’t sure how I could make a difference—I just knew I had to do something to help her.

One night after we visited Juliana, all the way home I couldn’t stop thinking about her. A hospital can be a very scary, cold place. I imagined how lonely Juliana must have felt lying there during the night.

When we got home, I sat down at our kitchen table. I always liked writing stories and drawing pictures, and I started working at it like I had done so many other nights. But this night was different—I was thinking about Juliana. I thought, “Juliana is going to receive rehabilitation training (康复训练) but money is tight. What if I can sell my drawings? Then I can raise money to help her get well faster.”

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写词数应为150左右。

Jack had waited all autumn, winter and spring for the opening day of the fishing season. Fishing was his favorite sport, and he was ready to go. His fishing pole stood by the door. He had tied a brand-new red-and-white lure (诱饵)to a three-pronged hook(三叉钩). He was going to catch the biggest fish ever in the small river by his house. However, Mom said he had housework to do.

“Jack, if you want to go fishing, you need to clean your room first," Mom said. Jack hung his head, rushed to his room, and threw himself onto his bed. Jack picked up two wrinkled (起皱的)shirts off the floor and threw them into his closet. Then he hurriedly pulled the bedspread (床罩) up over his pillow. Cleaning his bedroom didn't seem as important as not being late for the opening day of the fishing season.

Jack listened carefully to make sure where Mom was in the house. If she was in the kitchen, she might stop him to make sure he had done a good cleaning job. But if she was in the laundry room he could make a quick getaway. After several minutes, the washing machine bell finally made Mom go to the laundry room.

Jack rushed to the door, with his fishing pole on his shoulder. He paused for a moment to close the door as quietly as possible, and then ran across the field. He had escaped without being caught. Maybe Mom didn't even notice his room wasn't really clean. Taking a deep breath, Jack threw the tip of his pole back behind his shoulder and threw it forward, allowing the line to move off the wheel. He listened to the soft splash (溅泼声) of the lure as it entered the fresh, cold water in his favorite fishing hole. I was just as fun as he remembered. Soon he totally forgot his bedroom, Mom or anything else.

Paragraph 1:

Jack enjoyed watching his lure dance in the water.
