6 . HONG KONG — At the school where Ko Cheuk-kiu works, there are neither school bells ringing nor students running around the playground. “You look good today. Shall we review the text together?” After greeting her student Hei Hei, Ko, in a light blue uniform, turns on her tablet computer and begins to teach at the bedside.

Founded in 1954, the Hong Kong Red Cross Hospital Schools initially provided services in only one public medical institution. Now, it is a special education institute funded by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, with 26 school units attached to 19 public hospitals. Its services are mainly divided into three fields — general specialty, psychiatry, and homebound teaching programs. The first two provide services for hospitalized students to reduce their difficulties in returning to school, while homebound teaching is aimed at students who need to stay at home to recover for a long period. Teachers are assigned to different hospitals or students’ homes and shift on a regular basis. Depending on the situation, teachers will carry out small group or one-on-one bedside teaching, and each session lasts about 30 minutes.

“Teaching children in a hospital? I was curious and keen to know more about it,” Ko recalls, explaining she first learned about the school from a newspaper report in 2009 when she had just finished her master’s degree in language. Ko, who also studied special education, applied for a teaching position at the school and was hired as a Chinese language teacher.

Teachers in hospitals have to meet students with different medical conditions and face all kinds of challenges every day, but Ko regards these experiences as training, which have led her to have a deeper appreciation of life. Over the years, Ko has received a lot of greeting cards from parents and students showing their appreciation. Looking at these warm words of encouragement, she silently sends her best wishes to the students. “I hope they can soon recover and go back to school, and continue to pursue their dreams,” she says.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。Andréa Speranza是一名女性消防员,多年来她一直致力于鼓励其他年轻女性像她一样成为消防员。

7 . In 2000, Andréa Speranza achieved her dream of becoming a firefighter joining the Halifax Regional Fire Service. Her job was exactly as satisfying as she imagined it would be, except for one thing: she still hadn’t seen another woman in her role — not in a magazine, not on television, not in real life. Even today, less than five percent of firefighters in Canada are women. Speranza decided that she wanted to help young women see that they, too, could have a career like hers.

The result is Camp Courage, a program for girls aged 15 to 19 who want to learn more about firefighting. In 2006, Speranza and about 20 volunteers welcomed their first 17 participants, recruiting (招募) attendees through advertising in schools and recreation centers. Over the course of eight days, the girls discovered the ins and outs of being first responders: learning how to put out fires, deliver first aid and even use the jaws of life (救生钳) on a car.

Camp Courage now runs one session every year in Halifax and is free to attend. To offset costs, Speranza and her fellow campers fundraise by holding everything from car washes to comedy nights. Hopeful campers must also submit an essay describing how they plan to help their community, or a specific individual in need. And they have to deliver on the plan—from building a bench (长椅) for a senior at a bus stop to launching a local chapter of the Kids Help Phone.

Hundreds of girls have passed through Camp Courage, and 36 percent are doing exactly what 52-year-old Speranza hoped they would: working as first responders across the country. This past summer, the camp held its first session for young women in Halifax, as well as its first national camp in Calgary with plans to roll out more in 2023.

1. What was probably Speranza’s wish in 2001?
A.To see more female firefighters.
B.To make contact with more teenage girls.
C.To be recruited to the Halifax Regional Fire Service.
D.To work part-time in schools and recreation centers.
2. What does the underlined part “ins and outs” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Risks.B.Chances.C.Details.D.Purposes.
3. What can be inferred about Camp Courage?
A.It is a nonprofit international organization.
B.It teaches the value of being helpful to others.
C.It requires its campers to write an essay every week.
D.It introduces boys and girls to the emergency services.
4. What can we say about Speranza?
A.She had a burning ambition to play comedy.
B.She used to be reserved and disciplined.
C.She is intellectual and scholarly.
D.She is brave and inspiring.

The Student Travel Exhibition

The Student Travel Exhibition in London is an annual event aimed at students in     1    late teens and early twenties. It brings together organisations     2    (involve) in student travel and students who want to travel. I have been looking forward to this event     3    I need an answer to my burning question: what should I do with my gap year?

The exhibition     4    (divide) into three areas. In the “theatre area” you can watch talks and presentations from experienced travellers. In the “vacation area” you can find information about recreational holidays. And in the “volunteer area” students who want to do charity work can find out about their options.

I arrived early on the first day, in order to listen to a speaker who     5    (do) voluntary work in Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa, the year before. The talk encouraged me     6    (find) out more about volunteering and I spent most of my time in this fascinating area. Although the vacation area was also interesting, it simply wasn’t as     7    (stimulate).

The highlight of the exhibition for me, personally, was talking to a very informative representative from VSO, an organization     8    sends volunteers to fight poverty around the world. I learned about the work that VSO is doing in countries like Cambodia, India and South Africa and I finally made up my mind that voluntary work is     9    I want to do.

All in all, now, I find the Student Travel Exhibition an inspiring and enjoyable event and I’d like to recommend it     10    any student who is thinking of travelling. It might change your life!

10 . The Professional Benefits of Volunteering

If you’re thinking about changing careers, it’s often necessary to find a way to develop new skills. This is not always possible in your current position so doing volunteer work can be a fantastic way of breaking into a new industry or profession.

Even if you’re not planning to change careers, there are numerous personal benefits of volunteering. Including volunteer work on your resume not only demonstrates you have the required skills, but it shows that you are passionate, have a positive attitude, are motivated by things other than money, and that you’re willing to help others. These are attractive attributes for any employer.

Meeting others through volunteer work is the most common way for people to expand their network and such connections are invaluable for professionals. In addition to this, the social, psychological, and health benefits of volunteering should not be underestimated.

    1    Although there are professional benefits to volunteering, many are motivated by the value of doing something for the good of others.

* Gaining Professional Experience

Volunteering gives you the chance to gain work experience in your field. If you have just graduated or are applying for entry-level jobs, you can find yourself in a chicken-and-egg situation when it’s hard to get your first job in your desired field.     2    By getting that valuable first experience under your belt, you become much more employable.

* Trying Out a New Career

It can be difficult to know which career you want to pursue without actually trying it. Taking a full-time, paid position is a big commitment and skipping between jobs and careers too regularly will make it seem to employers that you lack direction. Doing volunteer work is a fantastic way of trying something to see if it’s what you want to do.

* Training Opportunities

Though more affordable part-time courses which are emerging, the cost of education is generally getting more expensive.     3    Many organizations who use volunteers provide extensive training which can be invaluable in the long run.

* Improving Job Prospects

Volunteer work improves your job prospects for two main reasons.     4     Getting a professional recommendation from someone can significantly increase your chances of getting a job. Secondly, employers look favorably on job applicants who have volunteer work on their resume. It makes a very positive impression.

A.Firstly, in a competitive job market, professional networking is essential and volunteering is a fantastic way of expanding yours.
B.Aside from personal gains, the benefits of volunteering for the community are immense.
C.Just because volunteer work is unpaid does not mean that it is any less valuable.
D.However, volunteer work is easier to find.
E.Firstly, one thing we cannot deny is that volunteering is something painstaking and harsh.
F.With this in mind, receiving free training can be as valuable, if not more so, than receiving a wage.
