1 . In early November of 1942, my geology class was supposed to go on a field trip to see the mica mine (云母矿). Although it rained, everyone showed up on time. I was the only girl in the class. We all fit into two cars.

Near Deary, Mr. Tier, our teacher, went into a store to ask about the direction, while townsmen looked at us with curiosity. On the store owner's advice, we drove out into the hills for a few miles. Then we left the cars. We were afraid they would get stuck in the mud.

Eventually, we located the mine near the top of the mountain. There was a very small hole, running about two or three hundred feet into the mountainside. The passage was so narrow that we could touch both sides with our hands, and not tall enough to allow us to stand up straight. The first boy held the torch; we took hold of the backs of each other's coats, in a line, and followed him in, ducking our heads. After getting in, we were disappointed because it was not the mine our teacher was looking for.

The rain was coming down hard as we started back to the cars to go home. Back at Deary, we went into a drugstore and stood around its big heating stove to dry out. The clerk was a middleaged lady. Seeing our entirely wet hair and clothes, she handed each of us a cup of hot water immediately and asked if there was anything wrong with any of us.

Hiking eight miles in the rain had not reduced our interest at all. We all felt we had had a wonderful time, even if we didn't find the mine.

B.Because it was not easy to drive in the mud.

2. What does the underlined word "ducking" in Paragraph 3 mean?

3. What can we know from the passage?
A.The author was not liked by her classmates.
B.The weather terribly influenced the trip.
C.The teacher was not professional enough.
D.The class failed to see the mica mine.
4. Where is the text most probably taken from ?
A.A personal blog.
B.A writing guide.
C.A science magazine.

3 . In high school, you can take part in a club you enjoy, whether that’s singing coking, or something else.     1     If your school doesn’t offer a club that interests you, staring your own club will allow you to continue to enjoy this hobby. Follow the steps below to start a club.

Brainstorm ideas.

First, decide what you want your club to focus on. You may already know, but if you don’t, think about activities you enjoy doing.    2     You can do this by looking at your school’s student handbook or asking someone at the school office.

Decide the club’s goals.

3     Think about what the aim of the club is, and what activities you want members to take part in. By making them clear, you will be able to provide a clearer vision (构想) of your club when you present the idea to the school and potential members.

Register (登记) your club with the school

Most high schools require clubs to be school-agreed.    4     If your school doesn’t agree, you likely won’t be able to have club meetings or post information at school, so learn how to register your club and make it official.

    5

Once your club is allowed by the school, it’s time to recruit (招募) members. Mention your club to your friends and people who you think will be interested. If your school allows it, create and post flyers one week before the first meeting that state the club’s name, goal, and the time and date of the first meeting.

A.Spread the word.
B.Hold your first club meeting.
C.If you enjoy skiing, you could start a ski club at your school.

5 . I am a part of the Windward Robotics team known as the Omnicats, one of the many clubs offered at my school, My eight teammates and I started out by watching the robotics qualifiers (资格赛) and finals of Chinese teams. We used these robotics videos for inspiration and drew up mind maps of what our team wanted to do.

We meet every day for two hours after school in order to build our robots. Typically, adults oversee what students are building, but my school lets teens take control. It leaves room for more errors, but we’re prouder of our final product.

Before our first real match, a practice one was offered at the actual site. My sub-team had been further along than other teams but quickly fell behind,’ When that big day arrived, I immediately felt my teammates’ nervousness. Our first match was in three minutes. All of us glanced around at each other, anxious and nervous. Our robot was still sitting in a box. Two of our teammates rushed to take the robot for an official examination as the rest of us discussed our strategy.

Our team captain explained that we all should try driving the robot now, while it was early in the season. She gave me the remote. I had only driven for a limited amount of time in practice so I was extremely nervous. Our autonomous code (自动代码) began to run almost immediately after our short discussion. Despite all the drama, we ended up winning the match. Not too bad for the first match! I was so proud. I did not enjoy the pressure of driving but liked building the, robot behind the scenes instead.

We have transferred to a different type of robotics at the end of the season, which involves the whole team designing one giant robot with large tools. I am a part of the electrical team now, so I make sure the motherboard (母板) can supply the robot’s energy needs. We have all enjoyed the rest of the season and learned that robotics is never dull!

8 . I don’t know about you, but I used to hate school.

However, there’s a school in Penang that makes learning so enjoyable that its students look forward to attending classes every day. Some students even threatened their parents they’d run away from home if they missed any of the school activities! And it’s all owing to the school principal. Who is this legend, you might ask?

He’s S. Sangga, a 57-year-old headmaster at SJK (T) Sungai Ara, Penang. The school started adopting the fun learning approach since Sangga was transferred to the school in 2011. A few floors in the school had been painted with games like snakes and ladders, as well as teng teng. Not only that, there are particular reading corners as well as computers set up just for the students to discover and learn about new things! Since then, the students have been arriving extra early at 6: 30 a. m., just to have some fun before classes start at 7: 40 a. m!

If you think that’s all, you’re wrong.

Mr Sangga is an supporter for environmental protection and preservation. The school takes the students for walks in the surrounding areas every Friday, and they’ll take them to collect garbage in selected areas every Saturday. The students have since become responsible “anti trash heroes” by making a stand for our environment. The school has also banned the use of plastic, as well as fast food and junk food. Not only do the students practice this at school, but they start to take their knowledge home to educate their family!

Sadly, Mr Sangga will retire in three years, and he hopes that the students and teachers would continue their practice.

1. Why did some students threaten to leave home?

10 . Fancy Dress High School

Many American schools don’t have a dress code(规范). Sometimes students can dress in the wildest ways you could imagine!

I noticed this during my first term as an exchange student at Macon High School in Missouri. One day, I saw all the students at my school were dressed up in strange clothing. The girls were wearing bright-coloured shirts and mini-skirts. The boys were wearing old-fashioned black suits. Later my friends told me that they were dressed up in the fashion of the 1900s.

“But why?” I asked, surprised.

“Because it’s the homecoming week, a time when former(以前的) students of the school come back and meet each other again. There are parties and sports events. The school encourages us to wear 1900s clothes on Monday, pyjamas(睡衣) on Tuesday, orange clothes on Wednesday, clothes inside out on Thursday, and socks that do not match on the last day! Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?”

I’d never imagined students wearing anything so crazy at school before. The next day, I plucked up(鼓起) my courage and went to school in blue pyjamas. There was no embarrassment(尴尬) since everyone was in pyjamas, even the teachers! It excited us when we noticed that Mr Lewis, our American history teacher, who always has a straight face and never makes jokes, was wearing pyjamas too! It made class that day such a lot of fun.

The rest of the week was also amazing. But I realized that homecoming week was not just about fun, but a chance to be creative and try out new things.
