1 . It will come as no comfort to a child shivering on a playing field on a cold winter's day. But regular organised school sport helps children in their academic studies in years to come. The researchers said other "structured” activities such as music or religious activities were not as beneficial for attention as taking part in a games lesson. The difference in academic ability was noticeable even at age ten, with those who had taken in sports since the start of junior school faring better than those who hadn't.

The Canadian study looked at children aged six and then ten. Professor Linda Pagani said:"We worked with information provided by parents and teachers to compare kindergarteners' activities with their classroom activities as they grew up.By the time they reached the fourth grade, kids who played structured sports were clearly better at following instructions and remaining focused in the classroom. There is something special to the sporting environment-perhaps the sense of belonging to a team to a special group with a common goal—that appears to help kids understand the importance of respecting the rules and honouring responsibilities.”

Researchers began studying 2,694 Canadian children around the age of six, with teachers filled in questionnaires about their behaviour in school.Meanwhile, the children's parents were interviewed by phone or in person about their home life. The exercise was the repeated four years later to test what effect the behaviour had.

Professor Pagani said: "We found children who had better behaviour in the kindergarten class were more likely to be involved in sport by age ten.Nonetheless(虽然如此),we found those children who were specifically involved in team sports at kindergarten scored higher by the time they reached the fourth grade.”The researchers believe sporting activities and attention skills go hand in hand. Professor Pagani added:“The results should be encouraging for schools looking to cut childhood obesity rates and low attainment in schools.”

2 . In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join “environment club”. In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clean.

Here are some things students often do.

3 . When their daughter Morey started kindergarten, the Belanger family were worried because their 6-year-old daughter was deaf. Rather than send her to a special school for deaf children, Morey's parents decided to give her a traditional school experience and send her to Dayton Consolidated School.

They worried if their daughter would be able to make friends. They also had concerns as to how her classmates would treat her and whether her teachers would be able to help her learn effectively(有效地). But then the school had a response they never expected — teaching all their students and staff sign language. That way, everyone could communicate with Morey on a personal level.

"I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed," said Morey's mom. "I think all the kids feel excited that they know another language and I think they think it's fun. It makes me happy to see her supported, loved and accepted. Morey is excited to go to school every day. She's made really good friendships. "

Not only did they learn sign language, but they also put up sign language posters in the halls and equipped a special hearing system. Additionally, they provided extra training so that teachers could become more familiar with the language. “Morey, without even knowing it, has taught us so much," says headmaster Kimberly Sampietro. "She's brought a culture to our system that we didn't have before. Morey helped the whole class to learn the alphabet. The kids look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her. ”

Morey's hearing loss is a result of a condition that's so rare that it's never been named. However, thanks to the hard work and goodwill of her classmates and teachers, she can communicate with them on her terms.

1. What concerned the Belangers when Morey started kindergarten?
A.That they would have to separate from her.
B.That they could hardly afford her education.
C.Whether she could lead a normal school life.
D.Whether she could receive special training.
2. Why did Dayton Consolidated School teach all their students and staff sign language?
A.To equip them with one more practical skill.
B.To develop closer student-teacher relationships.
C.Out of concern for their teaching effectiveness.
D.Out of concern for a student with special needs.
3. What does Morey's mom think of the kindergarten's response?
A.Inspiring and useful.B.Dull but worthwhile.
C.Considerate but complex.D.Shocking and controversial.

A.Morey is good at teaching others.
B.Morey isn't the only one who benefited.
C.Morey has become a symbol of the kindergarten.

4 . Recently, an unhappy event has happened in a kindergarten in Chongqing. Most primary schools suggest that parents should come along with their children to school and guard the school gates from 7:40 to 8:00 in the morning. Opinions on this problem are different from person to person.

Sun Zhenyao, 13, Jiangbei

Safety comes first. I don’t think it’s a big problem for parents. They just have to stay at the school gate for a little longer. Also, it’s very crowded around school gates in the morning. Traffic accidents can happen. Depending only on school guards is not enough. If parents can help, there will be fewer accidents.

Li Minyi, 14, Yubei

On weekdays, guarding schools and keeping students safe should be the schools’ responsibility – not the parents’. Also, the time during which they have to stand guard is usually about 7:40 to 8:00 am, the morning rush hour. Some parents might get caught in a traffic jam and be late for their work. I don’t think this task should fall on the parents.

Sun Run, 14, Beibei

This request is not just about children’s safety, but also supporting the school. It is a good way to improve relations between parents and schools. Secondly, parents can set a good example for their kids by working selflessly for their society.

Huang Xi, 15, Jiulongpo

Most of these parents are office workers. They have their own things to do. They hurry to go to work every morning. To meet this new request, some may have to ask for time off. This will affect their work performance.

1. The students who agree with the suggestion are_______.
A.Li Minyi, Sun Run
B.Huang Xi, Sun Zhenyao
C.Huang Xi, Li Minyi
D.Sun Zhenyao, Sun Run
2. According to the students, why should parents guard the school gates?
A.Guarding schools and keeping students safe should be the schools’ job.
B.It is a good example for kids to have a sense of responsibility.
C.Some parents can ask for time off to guard the school gates.
D.There are not enough school guards in the primary schools.
3. This article is most likely to be_________.
A.a newspaper interview
B.a police report
C.a short story
D.a textbook passage

7 . Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned (禁止) at school for all children under 15 in France. Under the ban students are not able to use their phones at all during school hours, including meal breaks.

“I think it’s a good thing. School is not about being on your phone,” Paris mum Marie-Caroline Madeleine told AFP. “It’s hard with kids. You can’t control what they see and that’s one of the things that worry me as a parent.”

There is no law like this in Australia, but some Australian schools have banned phones.

McKinnon Secondary School in Victoria introduced a total ban in February and Principal Pitsa Binnion said this has been a success.

McKinnon students still have a Chromebook to use in every class for day-to-day learning but they’re not allowed to use social media. Ms Binnion said at first “teachers cheered and students moaned (抱怨) ,” but now they’re seeing the advantages. “They come to school and they’re not allowed to use phones at all during the school day, including lunch breaks,” she said.

“It’s been wonderful in terms of students communicating with each other at lunchtime and not looking at their screen,” she said.

Ms Binnion also leads by example and doesn’t use her mobile phone in school. “I think anyone can do it if we’ve done it.”

Not everyone agrees with the bans. Western Sydney University technology researcher Dr Joanne Orlando wrote in online magazine The Conversation earlier this year that Australia should not ban phones in schools because it’s important to educate kids to live in the age they are raised in.

“A good education for students today is knowing how to use technology to learn, communicate and work with ideas,” she wrote. “Banning students from using smartphones is a 1950s response to a 2018 state-of-play.”

1. Why did Madeleine welcome the ban?
A.School is for studying.B.Kids behave badly nowadays.
C.Teachers find it hard to control kids.D.Her kids depend too much on phones.
2. What can we learn about the ban in McKinnon Secondary School?
A.Some teachers were against it at first.
B.Students can now see the good of the ban.
C.Students can use their phones at lunch beaks.
D.Teachers have stopped using phones at school as well.
3. What does the underlined word “Chromebook” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?
A.A book.B.A notebook.
C.A learning website.D.A kind of computer.
4. What does Dr Joanne Orlando think of banning phones in schools?
A.It will disconnect parents and kids.B.It will cause kids to communicate less.
C.It will prevent kids being tech-minded.D.It will make education go back 60 years.
