3 . When I first started taking photographs of the night sky, I never thought I’d end up doing it for a living. I’d always been interested in photography. I used to drive my family and friends crazy because I was always taking photographs of them. Then one day I saw a poster of the Earth taken from outer space. Posters like that were really popular in the 1970s. I had seen lots of them, but there was something different about this one. It attracted me and it ended up changing my life!
It hasn’t always been easy though. I remember trying to take a picture of the Comet Hale-Bopp for a photography competition in 1997. I checked with the experts at the local weather station to make sure they weren’t expecting clouds or strong winds. At 3: 30 am I set the camera on a tripod(三脚架)in my garden, and then I began the countdown to 4: 00 am, when the comet was scheduled to appear. I recall thinking, “If everything goes as planned, the photo will show the comet as a line of light moving across a background of stars.” But suddenly everything was terribly wrong! At 3: 59 am, just as I was making the final adjustments, out the bushes came a streak(色条)of black heading straight for my feet, and before I knew it, the camera, the tripod and I were on the ground! The streak of black was my neighbor’s cat Tiddles out for his late-night exercise, and he had ruined the only chance I had for the next 2,000 years of taking photographs of the spectacular(壮观的)comet!
Missed photo opportunities aside, astrophotography is a great job, and it can also be an enjoyable hobby. Surprisingly enough, you don’t need any special equipment: just a 35 mm camera, a tripod and some slow-speed film. But you must remember to take care of your equipment.

5 . I have never understood why we keep a garden and why years ago when I bought my first house, I started digging up a small land for vegetables before doing anything else. It is so easy and cheap to buy carrots; why raise them? When April comes, I always find myself looking at that miserable land, resolving not to plant it again. But unavoidably a morning arrives when, just as I am awakening, a refreshing scent, as if from the very center of this planet, comes through the window. And the sun suddenly, seems to have a different, deeper yellow in its light on the carpet.
It is not only pleasure sending me back to stare at that plot of soil, it is real conflict. The question is the same each year—what method should we use? The last few years we put black plastic between the rows, and it worked perfectly. But plastic looks so industrial, so unromantic, that I have gradually moved over to hay. We cut a lot of hay and it does improve the soil. Besides, it looks lovely and comes to us free.
The attractions of gardening, I think, at least for some gardeners, are moral. Whenever life seems pointless and difficult to grasp, you can always get out in the garden and get something done. Also, your parental instinct comes into play because helpless living things are depending on you, requiring training and protection from enemies. In some cases, as with beans and cucumbers, your children—as it were, begin to turn upon on you in great numbers, growing more and more each morning and threatening to follow you into the house.

A.High price. | B.Environmental concern. |

8 . Weeks ago, the longest I had ever run was 5K.What’s more, I didn’t like running, so often I would fasten my old shoes, walk out of the house with heavy steps, get less than a mile in and wonder why I was bothering, especially when there are many more satisfying ways of exercising. Before last summer, I had never participated in any kind of race at all.
At the end of July, I had completed triathlon(铁人三项) after two weeks of training. At the end of it came the run—which ended up more like a walk. But afterwards, I realized something about it appealed to me. The extremely painful fun of doing something I hated and was unprepared for turned out to be like a difficult task to test my abilities and skills.
So when an invitation to do the Berlin Marathon dropped into my inbox a couple of weeks later, it felt like a twist of fate. After the triathlon, hadn’t I been saying that I should start running, precisely because I hated it so much? The joy of the triathlon had been that I challenged my limits. It felt necessary to find out again where those limits might lie. There was a very good chance that I would not only fail but embarrass and hurt myself in the process. But there were plenty of reasons not to do it, I said yes.
Marathon training is supposed to take at least 20 weeks or more, and that is for someone who has run before. But I don’t even know what speed I’m aiming for. Finally the training plan becomes something to stop me worrying when the race seems too frightening. This happens often, as I count the days to the race and picture I fell over in the middle of a Berlin street. This anxiety feels sure to happen, but there is something equally unavailable about the training plan; if I follow it, then I have done everything I can; if I do everything I can, then I can’t regret what comes at the end. In the most extreme training week, I run about 40 miles.
