3 . Pigeons have a bad reputation. Maybe these birds’ familiarity makes them an easy target: They are common residents of every continent, save Antarctica. Some people think pigeons are dirty or diseased, as they spend chunks of their days pecking at trash. Others might ignore them entirely, or perhaps go so far as to call them “rats with wings.” But Rosemary Mosco, a science writer, cartoonist, and naturalist, believes these creatures deserve more respect. “We’ve gotten them super wrong,” she says.

In Mosco’s latest book, A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching, she shares her positive views of the species that fell from grace. Once highly valued for their meat, and way finding abilities, pigeons are now largely rejected by human society. But Mosco, a lifelong city-dweller, has always found them fascinating. “If you do watch them, you’re just entranced,” she says. Her travel-sized book details pigeons’ coloration, field marks, and anatomy (解剖结构). But it’s more than a field guide. It’s also an informative account of pigeon history, biology, and behavior, complete with Mosco’s delightful illustrations.

Because pigeons’ fates are so connected with our own, pigeon history closely mirrors ours. Pigeons were distributed across the globe due to centuries of European exploration and colonization. In North America colonists hunted the native Passenger Pigeon for meat and destroyed its native forest habitat, driving it to extinction. Wherever humans domesticated pigeons, some escaped and went wild. Today’s city pigeons are descended from those birds.

Mosco says she’s met more birders who like pigeons than those who hate them. Birders, with well-developed observation skills, can understand pigeons’ entertaining behavior, she says. Plus, if pigeons aren’t enough of a draw on their own, there could be predators, such as hawks or falcons, nearby.

She wants all her readers to be kind to pigeons. But she also hopes that some will follow their pigeon fancy and become hooked on birding. “It’s my secret plot,” she says. After reading her book, you may agree with her that pigeons are as worthy a spark bird as any other.

1. What do the underlined words “fell from grace” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Live in danger.B.Push the envelope.
C.Play with fire.D.Get out of favor.
2. How does A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching differ from a traditional field guide?
A.It covers detailed pigeon science with illustrations.
B.It shows the author’s views of a particular subject.
C.It features numerous beautiful images and diverse cultures.
D.It conveys some views of theories accepted widely.
3. What is Rosemary Mosco’s hope for her readers?
A.To learn more about pigeon history and biology.
B.To be fond of birding and follow their pigeon interest.
C.To stop hating pigeons and start respecting them more.
D.To understand pigeons’ behavior and appreciate their beauty.
4. What is the text?
A.A chapter of a book.B.A book introduction.
C.An animal story.D.An academic paper.

文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章主要介绍Shachi Kaushik在撰写儿童读物上做出的贡献。

7 . There’s no end to the work to do with improving diversity in children’s media, especially for storybooks. Children need to be able to see themselves in the characters of the stories they hear and read, at a stage where they’re building their understanding of the world around them.

Shachi Kaushik’s new book, Diwali in My New Home, brings the festival of lights to life for an immigrant community.

This picture book is for children aged 5 to 8. It speaks to Indian children’s experiences living abroad when they’ve experienced life in India. The story is about a girl, Priya, who loves being with family and friends to celebrate Diwali. But Priya and her parents began living in the United States this year, and no one seems to know about the holiday. Priya misses the traditions in India. As she joins the lights together and creates rangoli art(地画艺术), Priya introduces the festival of lights to her neighbors. And even though the celebration is different this year, it’s still Diwali.

Kaushik was a lawyer before she discovered the joy of telling stories to young children. Storytelling began when she volunteered in Texas, where she hosted a monthly storytime for children. Seeing the joy on the children’s faces inspired her to write children’s books.

When asked “What’s the secret to making children pay attention to stories?”, she said, “I would say the secret is to be present and not to be shy from acting, singing or dancing. Be a performer. While reading, use facial expressions and voice to add excitement to the story. Also try asking questions like ‘What do you think will happen?’. Let the little ones’ imagination flow. Lastly, try adding a finger play song and some dance moves to get those little ones into the mood.”

1. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To give explanation of diversity.B.To explain the aim of the storybooks.
C.To show the importance of children’s media.D.To lead in the introduction of Shachi Kaushik’s book.
2. What is Diwali?
A.A festival.B.A country.C.A community.D.A character.
3. What encouraged Kaushik to write children’s books?
A.The joy from children listening to stories.B.The job as a lawyer.
C.The experience of selling storybooks.D.The money earned by hosting storytime.
4. Why does Kaushik ask questions when telling stories to children?
A.To test if they are shy.B.To attract their attention.
C.To encourage them to use facial expressions.D.To teach them to be a performer.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了科技是如何让作家在组织规规划人物,故事情节等方面受益的。

8 . Writing a book is a long and challenging process, but new technology is increasingly making it easier for authors to finish their books.

Michael Green, a US data scientist-turned-novelist, felt that technology could help him simplify the writing process when he was in the middle of writing his debut (首部) book.

He said that the process had become difficult to manage: “In the midst of editing, I got to the point where I started feeling like I had a lot of plots and characters,” he told the BBC. “I had all these documents on the deeper aspects of the world I was creating. I was worried about being able to keep track of it all. That’s when I switched into my more data science-minded approach to solving a complex problem with a lot of different pieces.”

Green went on to create Lynit, a digital platform to help authors plan and weave together the many elements that form a story, such as themes, characters, and major events.

“As the author gets a new idea that they want to bring into the story, they are able to input it into a natural framework,” he told the BBC. “Piece by piece, they’re adding to the story. As new ideas come in, they change, maybe by creating new nodes (节点), new relationships.”

Once the book has been published, technology is also playing an ever-increasing role in publicity and connecting with readers. Websites and apps from specialist firms allow authors to participate in live question-and-answer sessions with their audience.

Another tech firm, Crazy Maple Studios in California, US, offers authors four apps that can add music, animation, sound effects and in some cases, gameplay.

Michael Green believes technology will become even more important as a new generation of tech-savvy (精通技术的) writers becomes more well-known.

“What I’m finding with the Generation Z and even younger writers is that they’re looking for technology to give them guidance,” he told the BBC. “They see it as a tool to learn and grow with, rather than extra work.”

1. What difficulty did Green face in writing his debut book?
A.He would leave out important plots.
B.He had trouble organizing his thoughts.
C.He often felt he was not creative enough.
D.He felt the characters would not attract readers.
2. What is an advantage of technology according to the text?
A.It brings authors closer to their readers.
B.It can generate images based on words.
C.It can translate thoughts into sentences.
D.It creates new relationships for authors.
3. Which of the following would Green most probably agree with?
A.New technology matters to rising authors.
B.Technology adds to the burden of authors.
C.New technology gets in the way of creativity.
D.Young writers rely too heavily on technology.
4. Where is the passage most likely from?
A.A travel journal.B.A fairy tale.
C.A book review.D.A science magazine.
