A 24-hour self-service library was     1    (official) opened to the public in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous (自治的) Region, as part of an effort     2    (encourage) reading.

Located inside the city government’s service hall, the 24-hour self-service library operates through     3     unattended borrowing and returning device based on RFID technology. It is the region’s first 24-hour self-service library with the technology, according to the regional library,     4     is in charge of the project.

Tseten Butri, head of the regional library, said it has been conducting different reading activities in various forms online and offline. “It     5    (call) for core socialist values and traditional Chinese culture and aims to integrate (融入) reading into people’s lives by     6    (give) readers easy access to good books,” said Tseten Butri.

The library uses a facial     7    (recognize) system for admission. Visitors can also use IDs or social security cards for entry. The library keeps a total of 240 books of different kinds, ranging from law     8     social science and literature in Chinese and Tibetan languages.

Kalsang Lhamo, a resident of Lhasa, is pleased with the service. “I am happy to see that we have such a     9    (convenience) library in our city. It means the city is developing, and more residents will benefit from it,” Kalsang Lhamo said. “The library’s current collection is small,     10     it will grow as time goes by, and I hope we will have more smart self-service libraries at various sites in the region.”

The 2022 Shanghai Book Fair took place at the Shanghai Exhibition Center from Nov. 18 to 22, when about 120 publishers presented more than 20,000 books    1    about 100 reading activities were held.

The book fair has taken place annually since    2    (it) launch in 2004, except for 2021, when the event    3    (cancel) because of COVID-19.

“People tell me that every year when the Shanghai Book Fair opens, they feel as if they are hearing alarm clocks ringing, reminding them about the    4    (important) and benefits of reading,” says Xu Jiong, head of the municipal bureau for press and publication.

The annual celebration of reading has become the most    5    (excite) event for publishers and readers. As a result    6    COVID-19, many events have been held online, but face-to-face communication has been irreplaceable, Xu adds.

Kan Ninghui, president of the Shanghai Century Publishing Group, says although this year’s book fair was smaller,    7    ( compare)with the one held in 2020, the event, the core value of    8    is promoting good books and quality publication, attracted many relevant people at home and abroad,

Spending time in a bookshop can be quite     1     (enjoy), whether you are a book-lover or merely you are there to buy a book as a gift. You may even have entered the shop just     2    (find) shelter from a sudden shower of rain. Whatever the reason, you can soon become     3    (total) unaware of your surroundings.

This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places     6     it is possible to do this. The date of World Book Day changes every year. In the UK and Ireland, World Book Day is     6     the first Thursday of March.
