1 . How to Make and Keep a New Year’s Resolution
Are you making a resolution in the New Year? You’ll give yourself your best shot at success if your goals are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound).
•Specific. Your resolution should be absolutely clear. Making a concrete goal is really important rather than just vaguely(含糊地) saying “I want to lose weight.” You want to have a goal: How much weight do you want to lose and at what time interval?
•Measurable. This may seem obvious if your goal is a fitness related one, but it’s also important if you’re trying to cut back on something, too. If, for example, you want to stop biting your nails, take pictures of your nails over time so you can track your progress in how those nails grow back out.
•Achievable. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big stretch goals.
•Relevant.
•Time-bound. Like “achievable”, the timeline toward reaching your goal should be realistic, too. That means giving yourself enough time to do it with lots of smaller goals set up along the way.
If you’re building a habit, you’re planning for the next decade, not the next couple of months.
A.Five pounds in the next two months—that’s going to be more effective. |
B.Is this a goal that really matters to you, and are you making it for the right reasons? |
C.Logging progress into a journal or making notes in an app can strengthen the progress. |
D.Do you have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution? |
E.Focus on these small wins so you can make gradual progress. |
F.But trying to take too big a step too fast can leave you disappointed. |
G.It’s a resolution based on someone else’s intention. |

6 . Maybe you want to exercise more or start going to bed earlier in the coming year.
·Make a detailed(详细的)plan.
If your New Year’s plan is to exercise five days each week, a plan like “I’ll exercise on weekdays” would not be clear. A detailed plan like “I’ll exercise at school on weekdays during my lunch break” would be better.
·Make it fun.
If it’s not fun to exercise or study, you won’t keep it easily.
·
Tell a few friends about your goals so you’ll feel a deep sense of shame if they check back later and find out you haven’t followed through.
·Give yourself more chances.
You planned to get to bed early every night, but one Friday you stayed up late.
A.Make more friends. |
B.Get a little help from your friends. |
C.Maybe you’re going to take up a hobby like painting. |
D.Here is some advice that can help you keep your goals. |
E.After that, you may want to give up the early-to-bed plan. |
F.But if you get fun from your exercise or study, you’ll keep longer. |
G.All in all, you should give all the facts or information about something in your plan. |
7 . When someone asks me what my goals are for the coming year, I don’t usually know how to reply. Of course I, as most people do, want to see an improvement in my grades. This year, however, I’m hoping for something different.
Through the course of my school life, I’ve gradually developed a new understanding of the word “prioritization (优先次序)”. The first thing I wish to get in Senior One is the ability to manage my time better. I’ll surely become busier with the coming semester, and proper organization is important. From school clubs to academic competitions, everything should be set up in a way that doesn’t influence my health, which leads me to my second goal.
My mother has always told me put my health first, so in the future, I hope to be both physically and mentally healthy. A person can’t study without the energy to do so. In order to stay energetic, they must put their health first, no matter how busy they are, or how much work they have to complete.
And finally, I hope that I won’t be discouraged by my failure and never give up on my dreams. I hope that I’ll have the courage to try new activities and clubs. I believe my final goal can apply to every student around the world. We should all respect one another’s likes and dislikes, and focus on each other’s strengths, not our weaknesses. Everyone should try to make use of all of life’s opportunities.
Albert Einstein once said, “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” In my case, it’s the other way around. In order to keep moving, I must keep my balance—the balance between studies and activities, efficiency and procrastination(拖延症), academics and health, passions and dislikes. The new journey is going to be a hard one, but if I set these goals, I believe I will make it through to the end.
1. During Senior One, what does the writer want to do first?A.Focus on improving her overall grades. |
B.Join as many school clubs as possible. |
C.Learn how to manage her time well. |
D.Spend more time on outdoor activities. |
A.Discouraged. | B.Brave. | C.Uninterested. | D.Positive. |
A.To explain how to balance studies and activities. |
B.To stress the importance of health to students. |
C.To show what she likes about high school life. |
D.To share her goals for the coming school year. |

9 . You know you’re ready to see the world, but you need a little help in getting out of the door. With some thought and careful planning, you can head for adventure sooner than you think.
Decide how much money you can spend on a trip. You don’t need to be rich to travel, but knowing how much money you have will likely shape all other aspects of your trip.
Make travel arrangements. There are dozens of websites you can use to search for suitable flights all over the world. Try the airlines’ direct websites.
Book your accommodations. From hostels to luxury (奢侈)hotels, treehouses, and campgrounds, there are tons of choices when it comes to deciding where to stay.
Go to the doctor and get vaccinated(接种疫苗).
So wherever your next stop maybe: Good luck.
A.Ask a local for their advice. |
