The other day, I discover I couldn’t move my right arm and fingers after sleeping through a flight. Having diagnosed me with neural injury, the doctor suggested I could try acupuncture (针灸). So I followed his advices and began my treatment. Dozens tiny needles were inserted across my arm and fingers. I dared not move, because even a small change of position could cause a acute pain. Two weeks went by after I could eat a meal with chopsticks and it took a month for my arm and fingers to return back to their normal functions. I was very amazing at how magic these needles were. That I had always considered old-fashioned and useless turned out to be of great use. I hope acupuncture, with its help I recovered, will continue to bring health to other people.

I recently had a bad cold. My Chinese friends suggested that I drank some hot water, what made me think of some common home remedies back in the US.
When I was about 10, I got a flu, and my mom didn’t take me to the doctor. First, she had me to take several hot shower. Then, she told me to put as many clothes as I could. After that, I slept under a thickly blanket. I was sweating so much as I felt like I’d just taken a bath. Within a day, my flu was gone. This kind of “sweating” is the common home remedy in the West. Other remedies include drinking ginger soda when you have a stomachache and eat chicken noodle soup when you have a cold.

While driving several days before, I saw a cyclist fall off his bike. I stopped my car immediately. Seen his face was bleeding, I took out my first aid pack and treated by his injuries with cold packs and bandages. Fortunate he hadn’t hurt his head. Then I offered him ride to the nearest clinic, so he refused. He said he could go to the doctor myself. I was glad that I had those supply in my car, where I had never used before. I’ll continue to keep the first aid pack in my car in case something like this happened again.

Last summer, I had a valuable experience working like a volunteer in the community hospital. I worked from July 15 to July 31, when elderly over 55 were given freely medical examinations. Every day I arrive early and organized the people who came over. Then I would help him fill in the forms. Lead them to the different departments was also one of my duty. Everyone there worked in a tight schedule. By the time their examinations were over, I was already bathing in sweat. Tired though I was, but I benefited a lot from the experience as I built up my confident and improved my communication skills.

One day, I was cooking in the kitchen while the telephone rang. I went to answer it immediately. She was my close friend, Lisa. When we were talking on phone, the fire alarm sounds. I ran back to the kitchen only to find the room full of smoke and the beef bad burnt. I quickly turned off the gas, opening all the windows, and then went out of the house. In my surprise, the two fire engines were outside my house. I was quite worrying. I told the firemen that it was my careless cooking which caused the heavy smoke.
