I went up a mountain with an experienced ski instructor at last weekend to learn how to ski. I learnt hardly and then I thought I could ski well, so I decided to practice all by himself. I recently had a bad cold. My Chinese friends suggested that I drank some hot water, what made me think of some common home remedies back in the US.
When I was about 10, I got a flu, and my mom didn’t take me to the doctor. First, she had me to take several hot shower. Then, she told me to put as many clothes as I could. After that, I slept under a thickly blanket. I was sweating so much as I felt like I’d just taken a bath. Within a day, my flu was gone. This kind of “sweating” is the common home remedy in the West. Other remedies include drinking ginger soda when you have a stomachache and eat chicken noodle soup when you have a cold.

While driving several days before, I saw a cyclist fall off his bike. I stopped my car immediately. Seen his face was bleeding, I took out my first aid pack and treated by his injuries with cold packs and bandages. Fortunate he hadn’t hurt his head. Last summer, I had a valuable experience working like a volunteer in the community hospital. I worked from July 15 to July 31, when elderly over 55 were given freely medical examinations. Every day I arrive early and organized the people who came over. Then I would help him fill in the forms. Lead them to the different departments was also one of my duty. Everyone there worked in a tight schedule. By the time their examinations were over, I was already bathing in sweat. Tired though I was, but I benefited a lot from the experience as I built up my confident and improved my communication skills.
