文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,主要讲的是制药公司辉瑞和BioNTech周一表示,三次低剂量注射新冠病毒疫苗对保护5岁以下儿童有效。

2 . Drug companies Pfizer and BioNTech said Monday that three low-dose injections (注射) of their COVID-19 vaccine (疫苗) have shown to be effective in protecting children under age five.

The companies made the announcement after carrying out new experiments, involving the youngest population group. The new trial was carried out during last winter’s spread of the Omicron version of COVID-19. They plan to provide information about the experiments, to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, as soon as this week. Pfizer and BioNTech have said the amount of vaccine used in their shots for children under five is much less than the amount used in injections for adults.

In earlier trials, researchers for the companies said two shots did not seem quite strong enough to effectively protect young children. Thus, they decided to give a third shot to more than 1,600 individuals aged six months to four years. They said early data suggest the three-shot series is more than 80 percent effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19. However, they noted that those results were based on just 10 symptomatic cases. For the study to be complete, researchers need at least 21 cases to make a final declaration of effectiveness. The companies said the vaccine was generally well-received among trial subjects, with only mild side effects reported.

It remains unclear how many U.S. parents will vaccinate their children in the youngest age group. COVID-19 is generally milder in children than adults. And only about 29 percent of five to 11-year-olds in the country have received vaccinations.

1. When did the new trial was carried out?
A.During last winter.B.Before the spread of the Omicron version of COVID-19.
C.This week.D.Not mentioned.
2. Why was the third vaccine needed?
A.Because the amount of vaccine used for children is much less.
B.Because two shots didn’t appear to be effective enough to protect the kids.
C.Because of the spread of the Omicron version of COVID-19.
D.Because the participants were young.
3. What can be inferred from the text?
A.The injection of the COVID-19 vaccine got strongly support from the FDA.
B.The amount of U.S. parents who allow their children to be vaccinated is small.
C.COVID-19 affects adults less than children.
D.It is too early to draw the conclusion for the two companies.
4. What is the best title for this passage?
A.A COVID-19 vaccine was developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.
B.The success of COVID-19 vaccine development.
C.The trial of COVID-19 vaccine for the children under five.
D.More children need to be vaccinated.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了微创手术的优点,让它成为外科手术最好的选择。

4 . There was a time when the word “surgery” used to scare people, and they would try their best to avoid a surgical procedure. The feeling is understandable, as the idea of a large cut on your body is discomforting in many ways. However, thanks to the advances in medical science, surgical techniques have improved considerably.

Compared with the traditional open surgery, minimally invasive surgery (微创手术)has several benefits to offer. Not only is the procedure quick and less painful, but also ensures rapid recovery. Now, surgical procedures, either big or small, are done within a few minutes to a few hours. The best part about the minimally invasive surgery is the painless procedure. The advanced techniques are helping with quality treatments to patients who have to undergo (进行) surgical procedures.

Unlike the traditional open surgery that requires a large cut, a surgeon makes multiple tiny cuts of less than an inch. For the process, the surgeon uses small surgical instruments, such as a tiny tube with a mini camera at one end. Once the surgeon marks the cuts, he then passes the tiny tube through one of the cuts. The doctor monitors the images taken by the mini camera on the screen and uses them as a reference. These images give the surgeon a clear picture of the area undergoing the surgery. After the surgery, the surgeon cleans the cuts and sometimes places a bandage for additional support.

Minimally invasive surgery has become the first choice of patients with multiple medical conditions. In fact, it would not be wrong to say that these surgeries are now the standard surgical procedures for many routine operations. Whether you have a minor issue or want a surgical intervention for a major health condition, it is the best option.

1. What makes people afraid of surgery?
A.The large cut.
B.The great risk.
C.The high expense.
D.The slow recovery.
2. What can surgeons use as a reference in the surgery?
A.The previous treatment plan.
B.The images by the mini camera.
C.The standard surgical procedures.
D.The advice from other surgeons.
3. Who might benefit most from the minimally invasive surgery?
A.Patients in need of additional support.
B.Patients lack of regular checkups.
C.Patients with several medical conditions.
D.Patients scared of surgical instruments.
4. What is the author's attitude towards minimally invasive surgery?
A.Disapproving.
B.Objective.
C.Doubtful.
D.Supportive.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要就如何处理伤口进行了步骤说明。

8 . How to Close a Wound During First Aid

Closing and treating wounds (most often small scrapes) is a relatively common part of providing first aid.     1    , your main priority should be stopping the bleeding and getting emergency help.

2    . Quickly grab a clean cloth, towel and press the wounded region immediately. Hold it there for 3 minutes or until the bleeding stops, a small wound takes 25 to 30 seconds to clot, while a larger wound will take longer.

Stop the bleeding. You’ll need to hold a towel in place for a few minutes to fully stop the bleeding. In the case of a minor scratch, bleeding will normally stop not long after the cut is sustained.

3    . Once the bleeding has stopped, you will need to clean out any residual dirt from the small wound. Using a pair of tweezers, gently remove any small stones or pieces of soil that may be stuck in the exposed flesh.

Clean the wound with cool water. Now that the wound is free of dirt and debris, your next priority is to clean the wounded area. If you’re near a house or building, you can use the water from a faucet.     4    . Running water over the area for 5-10 minutes will remove any lingering dirt or bacteria.

Deposit a thin layer of antibiotic cream on the wound. This cream will kill any bacteria that may have gotten in the wound, and help the wound to heal more quickly.     5    . Common brands of antibiotic creams include Neosporin, Polysporin, A & D ointment or Bacitracin.

A.You should reapply pressure to the wound after the cleaning
B.If not, wash the wound with clean water from a water bottle
C.Control the bleeding
D.Apply gentle pressure to the small wound
E.It will also make the wound airtight
F.Remove any dirt from the wound
G.If the wound you’re treating is serious

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了沈自尹博士发明了一种能让人们保持年轻的药物。

10 . We can stay young forever. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging.

His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.

Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese medicine system called “shen”.

According to Shen, it is the kidney which adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the shen system slow the aging process, says a report in The Telegraph newspaper.

We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles, among others. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves.

So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young?

This is where Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine comes in. But how effective it will be, only time can tell.

1. How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?
A.By studying Western medicine.
B.By learning traditional Chinese medicine.
C.By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.
D.By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.
2. What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?
A.Medical treatment.B.People’s good kidney.
C.Level of people’s activity.D.Positive life attitude.
3. The reason why people become old is that _________.
A.their bodies are unable to fight diseasesB.their bodies produce T-cells
C.they have reduced strength, loss of hairD.they become weaker and weaker
4. We can probably learn from the passage that _________.
A.people should try to quicken the production of T-cells in the body
B.the more Chinese herbal medicine people drink, the better for health
C.it remains unknown how effective Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine is
D.producing more low calorie food allows people to keep young
