1 . How to Help a Friend with Depression

If you have a friend who is suffering from depression, you may be unsure about what you should do to help. There are several ways that you can help a friend with depression.

    1

As soon as you suspect that your friend is suffering from depression, you should encourage him or her to see a doctor. Your friend may be denying that there is a problem or maybe even embarrassed to admit that there is a problem. The extra encouragement of a friend may be all that your friend needs to seek help.

Supporting your friend

Depression can make people feel isolated and like no one cares. Even if you have shown your concern by doing things to help your friend, he or she may need to hear you say that you are there for them in order to believe it. Let your friend know that you are available.     2

Depression can also make a person feel worthless, but you can use encouraging words to support your friend until your friend remembers his or her worth again.     3    Avoid saying unnecessary things like, “It’s all in your head.” or “Snap out of it!”

Moving beyond depression with your friend

As your friend begins to feel better, keep your friend moving beyond depression by planning some fun outings.     4     And make plans to do those things so that your friend will always have something to look forward to.     5    Recent studies have shown it helps to ease the symptoms of depression and make people who are depressed feel more connected to others. You probably know what makes your friend laugh better than anyone else does, so make sure that you use that knowledge to laugh with them on a regular basis.

A.Those who laugh last laugh best.
B.Choose activities that you both enjoy.
C.Encouraging your friend to talk to you.
D.Helping your friend get treatment for depression.
E.Laughter is known as the best medicine for a reason.
F.Therefore, they can contact you right away if they need you.
G.You could say, “You are such a gifted artist. I really admire your talent.”

7 . Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.

A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. You won’t feel any immediate effects, but sitting for long periods of time will hurt you forever.

Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it’s best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it’s not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones(骨盆) to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine(脊椎), this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.

You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get painful or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins(静脉) and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage.

So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.

1. Which of the following is not the consequence of crossing legs?
A.Neck and back get hurt.
B.Feet and legs become numb.
C.Blood pressure goes up.
D.Pelvic bones keep perfect postures.
2. What does the underlined word “rotate” in Para3 mean?
A.break seriously
B.hurt greatly
C.move casually
D.straighten suddenly
3. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.How to choose a proper sitting posture
B.It is advisable not to sit with legs crossed
C.How to develop beneficial habits
D.Blood pressure harms our bodies.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。短文介绍了患有帕金森病的Michael J. Fox的个人经历。

8 . Michael J. Fox was at the height of his career when he developed Parkinson’s disease (帕金森病) in 1991. Since then, he has been fighting the disease and has not lost his love for life.

After his diagnosis (诊断), Michael concealed his illness for several years in order not to risk his career as an actor. His diagnosis didn’t become public until 1999. To this day, he has done his best not to be influenced by his illness as much as possible and has worked both in front of the camera and as a voice actor.

Michael said in an interview with the American magazine Haute Living in 2016: “I realize now that I can play anybody, as long as they have Parkinson’s.” Like the role of “Louis Canning” in The Good Wife, which he played from 2010 to 2016. For his role of the lawyer (律师), who suffers from the side effects of medication(药物) to treat Parkinson’s, he was nominated (提名) five times for an Emmy.

Michael has shown the doctors who said that he would not be able to work ten years after the diagnosis that this is not the case. He has found the right way to deal with Parkinson’s disease for him: Humor.

In an interview in March 2017, he joked about moments in his everyday life where he is controlled by his illness. “The thing that makes it funny to me is when I think about someone else watching all this and thinking, Poor Michael can’t even get the coffee — it’s so sad!”, explains the 59-year-old.

Since his diagnosis became public, Michael has devoted himself to Parkinson’s research. In 2000, he founded the Michael Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. By the end of 2018, 800 million US dollars had already been collected.
