3 . Is It Worth Buying Organic Food?
Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels (标签). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious (有营养的) and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren’t necessarily more nutritious, and they’re no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.
The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. “So consumers shouldn’t assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer.”
For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats.
While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.
Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn’t always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that “Whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.

Many astronauts visit the International Space Station (ISS). It is a research station in outer space. Anything sent to ISS has to be perfect on a taste test. Even so, astronauts can grow tired of eating the same old meals. Massa says many of the astronauts end up losing weight.

However, a new study has shown that eating too much ultraprocessed foods could set you on the falling road of cognition(认知).
The study, presented on August 1st at the 2022 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, followed over 10,000 Brazilians for up to 10 years. At the beginning and end of the study, the subjects took two cognitive testings, which included word memory, word recognition and spoken fluency, and they were also asked about their diet. The researchers found people who ate over 20% of daily calories from ultraprocessed foods had a 28% faster cognitive decline compared to those who ate less than 20%.
“The key problem is that ultraprocessed foods are usually very high in sugar, salt and fat, all of which cause systemic inflammation(炎症), perhaps the most major threat to healthy aging in the body and brain,” said Rudy Tanzi, director of the genetics and aging research unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. He added, “Ultraprocessed foods also replace eating food high in plant fiber that is important for keeping the health and the balance of bacteria(细菌)in your gut microbiome(肠道菌群), which is particularly important for brain health and reducing risk of age-related brain diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.”
Unfortunately, ultraprocessed foods make up 25% to 30% of total calorie intake in daily diet. For a person who eats 2, 000 calories a day, 20% would equal 400 or more calories — for comparison, a small order of fries and regular cheeseburger from McDonalds contains a total of 530 calories.
“We all need to know we should cook more. We say we don’t have time but it really doesn’t take that much time,” said Suemoto, an assistant professor at the University of So Paulo Medical School. “And it’s worth because we’re going to protect our heart and guard our brain from Alzheimer’s disease.”

8 . Does the lemon, the famous fruit of Limone, contain a secret ingredient that fights heart disease? Limone a small lemon-growing town on the shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy, holds a mystery which has made it popular with tourists in search of health. About 30 years ago scientists discovered that many people from the town had a unique protein in their blood. Thanks to it, the town’s people remained unaffected by heart disease even if they smoked, drank alcohol or ate large quantities of animal fat.
The discovery was wonderful for the people who lived in Limone; nowadays a million tourists visit their town between March and November each year. At its peak in the 19th century , the lemon industry in Limone produced as many as 15 million of the fruit annually. The crop was so successful because of the situation of Lake Garda: although it is relatively far north, it is protected from the winner cold by the mountains which surround it.
Nowadays, sadly, competition from southern lemon producers has meant that Limone concentrates more on its tourist industry than on lemon growing. The few remaining growers still produce the best quality lemon, however. Signor Ezio Ceruti, a lemon producer, says, “ To grow these lemons you need to love the trees and learn from the old people who still remember how it was once done .The trees respond by being healthy and producing beautiful fruit .” Although scientists do not yet know for certain whether this fruit contains the magic ingredient that protect the people of Limone against heart disease, a local lemon producer’s recommendation for health is simple: each day slice a whole lemon into a cup, fill with boiling water, cover, leave overnight, then strain and drink.

9 . Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cat hie Martin, British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes has very high levels of antioxidants(AOS,抗氧化剂).

GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.
