2 . Soaps are still big business today. A television soap such as The Bold and the Beautiful (an American television soap opera created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell for CBS) airs in nearly 100 countries with more than 350 million viewers daily.

People need to be able to identify with the characters and situations in a soap and relate what they see to their own lives. Everything needs to be exaggerated slightly to make the people and their lives more exciting than real life.

A good soap needs friction, with characters of different ages involved in dramatic situations.

According to the editor of Inside Soap magazine, all successful soaps use the same six or seven character types.     1    .

Soaps need a way to make sure that people will watch the next episode (a television or radio program that is one of series of programs in which the same story is continued each week). An episode always needs to end with a dramatic moment that won’t be resolved until the next episode.     2    . Will the couple get together? Will the hero be rescued? This is called a cliff-hanger.

We are all interested in other people’s lives, and soaps are an entertaining way to see into the lives of ordinary people.     3    . We can talk about soaps at school or at work with friends, sharing predictions and opinions.

They are usually on at the same time of day, so they become part of our daily routine. Families often watch soaps together at mealtimes so they can talk about what’s happening to the characters.

4    . When people become addicted to soaps, they often can’t distinguish between fact and fiction. Soaps make life seem exciting, so they can depress people who think their own lives are boring in comparison.

Soaps help us survive in the world by showing us situations that we might have to deal with. They inform their audience about a range of issues. Talking about your own problems can be difficult, so it’s often easier to talk about your own problems by talking about soap opera problems.

A.What will happen next?
B.Soaps are also something that can be shared
C.Gossiping about soaps is popular and very healthy
D.They’re usually extreme examples of people we see every day
E.Soaps can be addictive and can have a negative effect on people
F.Soaps also help viewers communicate with people around them

A Review on Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s film about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man known as “the father of the atomic(原子的) bomb”. As a drama about genius, pride and error, it    1    the life of the American theoretical physicist who helped research and develop the two atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two cities in Japan, during World War II.

Oppenheimer is a great achievement, partly because it    2    relates that period of history thanks to Nolan’s lifelike filmmaking. Nolan goes deep and long on the    3    of the bomb, but he doesn’t restage the attacks and there are no documentary images of the dead or cities in ashes.

The story tracks Oppenheimer across decades, starting in the 1920s with him as a young adult and continuing until his hair    4    . The film touches on his personal and professional milestones, the controversies that    5    him, and the attacks that nearly ruined him. Besides, the friendships and romances    6    him, yet also troubling, are also described.

The path of Oppenheimer’s life    7     shifted at Berkeley. He was once only an academic there, but his identity changed after Germany entered Poland by force. By that time, Oppenheimer had become friends with Ernest Lawrence, a physicist who invented the historic particle accelerator (粒子加速器) and played a(n)     8    role in the Manhattan Project. And Oppenheimer also met the project’s military head and was then made director of Los Alamos, where much of his later research on nuclear weapons took place.

François Truffaut once wrote that “war films, even those who support peace, even the best, willingly or not, present wars in a certain    9    way.” That is why Nolan refuses to show the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing millions of souls. In the film, you hear that Oppenheimer’s famous words    10    his own mind as the mushroom cloud rose: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” Nolan is actually reminding audience to reconsider the roles they can play in the world.

4 . The big screen is never short of films about World WarⅡ. When Nazi Germany is featured in these films, cruel Nazi officers and brutal concentration camps most often represent it. But the new Hollywood movie Valkyrie tells a different story, “a chapter of German history which is little known abroad”, according to the German Cultural Minister Bernd Neumann.

Valkyrie is based on a true incident that took place in 1944. Colonel(陆军上校) Stauffenberg had been a loyal soldier for his entire military career. However, after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reached breaking point. The destruction that his country had brought to its European neighbors had become too terrible for the colonel to bear in silence. He hoped that someone would find a way to stop Adolf Hitler, one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known. Realizing that time was running out, he decided that he must take action himself and joined the German resistance. These men drew up Operation Valkyrie, a plot to assassinate Hitler and to overthrow his Nazi government from the inside. This plot is what the film is named after and focuses on.

The Hollywood star Tom Cruise plays the lead role. “This was a very challenging film to make. We carried a huge responsibility to correctly portray history,” Cruise said.

However, the production has drawn criticism for lacking depth and for simplifying the motives behind the plot.

1. The passage tells us that Valkyrie is _____.
A.a story written by Bernd Neuman
B.a chapter in a German history book
C.a movie about Nazi concentration camps
D.a movie about a plan to assassinate Hitler
2. What does the sentence “he reached breaking point” probably mean?
A.He narrowly escaped being killed.
B.He couldn’t reach out his arm for anything.
C.He was rewarded for his brave attempts.
D.He decided to make a historic change in life.
3. Why did Tom Cruise say the film was challenging for him?
A.Because he never acted in such kind of film before.
B.Because he knew little about this episode of history.
C.Because he felt it a heavy task to present the real history.
D.Because he was afraid that the film might draw criticism.
4. The following passage will probably talk about _____.
A.the reason why the film is named after Valkyrie
B.the comments from the movie critics on Valkyrie
C.the praises from audience after watching Valkyrie
D.the importance of the role Cruise plays in Valkyrie

The Oral History of James Cameron

Sigourney Weaver didn’t want to star in a sequel to Alien. Then she read the screenplay. “Every single page was my    1    , with all kinds of different levels of drama,” she says. “Everything about the script was so good and powerful.”

It was a war movie in space. To the actress, the idea of Ellen Ripley fighting aliens alongside a unit of colonial marines sounded great. There was only one problem: “First of all, I didn’t know there would be machine guns in it,” she says. “And I had worked for gun     2     for a number of years. So I said, ‘I’m sorry, the gun thing, that’s not going to work for me.”

Another director might have turned his back on Weaver. But not James Cameron.

He responded by taking her to a shooting    3    . After letting off a few bursts of gunfire, she began to see the world through Cameron’s eyes. “Unfortunately, or     4    , that experience gives you so much adrenaline (肾上腺激素), and it’s a little bit transforming.” Weaver says. “I had to embrace the fact that I was with an army unit and they were going to be using these guns. And at some point I would have to do that, too. Jim really wants his actors to feel comfortable, and to feel     5    . So he always had me try everything first.”

Aliens was a typical Cameron blockbuster: exciting, moving, futuristic, propelled by a heroine, and full of things that audiences had never seen before. And, oh yeah: It was a box office     6     that won two Oscars and earned seven nominations, including Weaver’s first.

This is the James Cameron way. He’s     7     the popcorn film every single time he’s made one, from The Terminator to Titanic to Avatar. Each of his movies is more ambitious, more expensive, and more imaginative than the last. He’s    8    outdone himself — and the rest of Hollywood. But while Cameron’s genius is unique, he hasn’t made     9     alone. From his early days as a special effects assistant to     10     3D filmmaking again with ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, one thing has always been clear: working with James Cameron is a singular experience.

Mad Science

Until relatively recently, popular media neglected fact-checking and mostly offered negative, mad scientist-oriented stereotypes. A survey of more than a thousand horror films from 1931 to 1984 found that a third     1     “scientists or their creations as villains or monsters,” while merely 11 percent painted them as heroes. Later, a 2003 study    2     concluded that even “good” movie scientists (across genres) commonly succumbed to evil and corruption.

Onscreen researchers also typically     3     complex storylines, or even details of their personal lives, the 2003 article found. That’s a problem because most people don’t know scientists themselves and form opinions based on the media they consume, leading to a dehumanizing effect.

Factual errors and     4     portrayals have real-world consequences. As of 1981, people who frequently watched TV were more likely than     5     viewers to mistrust science, view it as dangerous and reject the entire career     6    .

That’s the primary reason why researchers work on Hollywood projects: to     7     these misconceptions.

Satisfyingly,     8     has improved in recent decades, likely because it’s far more common to recruit science consultants. Now, audience expect more     9     explanations behind far-out plots. These days, it’s now impossible for films to get away with these silly stereotypes, unless it’s a horror film or comedy. Hollywood now tends to heroize scientists, but glorifying the profession also has its     10     : It may obscure the fact that researchers are human and can make human mistakes too.

Cinema

It’s so magical - I don’t know why - to go into a theater and have the lights go down. It’s very quiet, and then the curtains start to open. Maybe they’re red. And you go into a world.

It’s beautiful when it’s     1     shared experience. It’s still beautiful when you’re at home and your theater is in front of you, though it’s not quite     2     good. It’s way much better on a big screen. That’ the way to go into a world.

Cinema is a language. It can say things - big, abstract things. And I love that about it.

I’m not always good with words. Some people are poets and have a beautiful way of saying things with words. But cinema is its own language. And with it you can say so many things, mainly     3     you’ve got time and sequences. You’ve got dialogue. You’ve got music. You’ve got sound effects. You have so many tools. And so you can express a feeling and a thought that can’t be conveyed any other way. It’s a magical medium.

For me, it’s so beautiful to think about these pictures and sounds     4     (flow) together in time and in sequence, making something that can be done only through cinema. It’s not just words or music - it’s a whole range of elements coming together and making something that     5     (not exist) before. It’s telling stories. It’s devising a world, an experience, that people cannot have     6     they see that film.

When I catch an idea for a film, I fall in love with the way     7     cinema can express it. I like a story that holds abstractions, and that’s what cinema can do.

‘Coco’ forced Pixar to dive deep into a real-world culture — and add some diversity

Pixar Studios, for all its fame for creating highly detailed worlds, has rarely had to worry too much about cultural authenticity (文化真实性). Even after all its famous research for movies     1    Brave and Ratatouille, the filmmakers have been free to use their imaginations, without real fear of offending toymakers and automakers. The Bay Area studio knew, however, that centering “Coco,” which opened Wednesday, Nov. 22, on Mexico’s Day of the Dead holiday would enter an entirely different area,     2     it would include not only descriptions of traditions, but also a significant increase in casting diversity. “We knew from the early stages that in creating this film,” co-director Adrian Molina said, “accompanying it was this huge responsibility to represent it faithfully. ”

The Day of the Dead     3     (celebrate) widely in Mexico each autumn in memory of departed loved ones and in support of their journey in the afterlife. “Coco” centers around several generations of relatives, both living and dead,     4     have lessons to learn and long-buried family secrets to uncover.

“Some filmmakers might simply graft (加入) customs and rituals onto an existing story. That is not at all       5     Pixar works,” said Molina, who is of Mexican descent (出身). “We decided pretty much when the film was approved — maybe even before —     6     we wanted to get the research done early. ”

Molina grew up in Calif, seeing some aspects of the holiday, but not others. “We wanted to experience the holiday: visit the people, visit the families, ask questions, take photos,” Molina said of the Pixar team’s research field trips to Mexico. “We wanted to really immerse (沉浸在) ourselves in     7     the celebration of the Day of the Dead was. Then we would be ready to start discussing story. ”

That animated story centers around a boy, Miguel, who longs to sing and play the guitar in public, despite his grandmother’s ban on making music. Coco, Miguel’s great grandmother, is the last living link to that long-ago misunderstanding involving her father,     8     traveling musician.

“There’s a certain language to family, and there’s a certain language across generations —     9     it’s a literal language, or just the acts of love and duty and responsibility that come with being a family,” Molina said. “Those seemed like the interesting things from my experience that could completely apply to this kid (Miguel) who feels out of place in his family. ”

Molina also applauds Pixar’s creative move into specific cultures. “If you’re not willing to make a connection with the stories of other people and let them be their     10     (talented) selves as artists, as performers, as filmmakers,” he said. “you’re missing out on what the audience wants. ”

“Everyone wants to hold the memories of the ones that have passed on with joy,” Molina said of “Coco,” “and share those memories, and keep them alive.”

Comments on Downton Abbey II: A New Era

9/10
Beautiful!
cacaescher1 May 2022
What a masterpiece! I’m a fan from the series and I must admit that seeing the cast all together for all these years so happy and cheerful is a true blessing and we all must be so grateful. I went to the Movie Theater today and everyone was enjoying so much! People were always laughing at Maggie’s jokes and commenting on each scene... it’s pure excitement. I have no words to describe my love for Downton Abbey.
6/10
Mild
guskeller21 May 2022
Downton Abbey: A New Era is simple escapism. The script emphasizes quantity over quality, parading numerous trivial plotlines rather than digging into any particular idea. Characters are hollowly pleasant because, ultimately, nothing is consequential. Easy entertainment has its audience, but some viewers might want tonal range, character depth, strong themes, or significant tension. The acting is charming enough and the soapy plot keeps moving, but Downton Abbey is more of a getaway than a journey.
4/10
Tired of fading characters
Drabble5008 May 2022
I loved the Downton Abbey series and have rewatched them during lockdown. The delightful fizz of the early series gradually began to fade out as they went on but they held us enraptured because we were invested in the characters.
Roll on the show through two movies and it’s obvious that both the characters and the franchise have run out of steam. This is a plot which ultimately goes precisely nowhere, so that we’re left with a trip in the south of France (without the scenery) and a filmwithinafilm back at the house.

D.It is honest about its own shortcomings.
