Roger’s grandpa was coming over to stay with them this weekend. Roger and his grandfather always had fun together. Grandpa once drummed in a band. He and Roger could make the whole house shake with their music.
“Some of the Grandpa’s joints(关节) are hurting him today.” Mum said, “Let’s give him time to rest, OK?”
“Sure,” Roger said. They would play drums for just a little while.
Roger practiced all morning. Finally, Dad’s car pulled up in front of the house. The car door opened and Grandpa stepped out.
“Hi, Grandpa!” Roger shouted from his bedroom window. “Listen to this!”
He rocked. He rolled. He drummed like Grandpa had taught him. Leaping up, he raced outside to his grandfather. “What did you think?” Roger asked. “Are you ready to drum together?”
“It was wonderful,” Grandpa said, giving Roger a hug. “But I’m sorry. I can’t play right now.” He went inside.
Dad smiled at Roger. “That’s fantastic ! Grandpa’s little tired. Maybe he’ll want to play later.”
But later, Grandpa just wanted to sit on the couch. He talked with Mom and played with baby Lucy. When Lucy threw her doll on the floor, Grandpa reached for it. He tried to pick it up, but the doll fell out of his hand. He tried again. The same thing happened.
Roger hurried over to help. He gave the doll to Lucy. Then he turned to ask, “Grandpa, are you ready to play the drums yet?”
Grandpa shook his head. “I’m sorry, Roger,” he said, “Not now.”
After lunch, Roger went to his room to get his skateboard. Someone was already inside. Grandpa stood near the drum set. He picked up a drumstick and began to play. Tap! Tap!
The drumstick clattered to the floor. Roger ran over and picked it up. “Here!” He held it out. Grandpa rubbed his hand. His fingers looked red and swollen.
“I can’t play today, Roger.” he said. “Maybe you’ll play later and I’ll listen.”
Roger thought for a long time and got an idea. His friend Jamie got a pedal(脚踏板) that could be linked to the drumsticks.

Beethoven is widely considered one of the greatest
High school was a hard time for me, as it is for many kids. Recently I was reminded (使想起) of a huge reason why I made it through that time of my life. The reason was music.
I was reminded of this because my old high school is about to be pulled down over the Christmas break and the kids will be moving into a bigger newly built school in January. The high school band and chorus(合唱队) recently gave a concert on the 80-year-old stage, and all chorus alumni (校友) were invited to take part in this event. The alumni have been invited back to sing with the chorus in other concerts before, but this one was special. This was our last chance to sing on this stage.
We all arrived early for rehearsal (排练). Many of us did not even need music during rehearsal because we remembered the song so well. It became a tradition to invite alumni back on stage and sing “Honor and Glory” every year. After one rehearsal of it, it was like we never left.
As we waited for the beginning of the concert, we began taking ourselves on one last tour of the high school. We looked at the same artwork that has been on the same walls for years, but the only good memories (记忆) I actually remembered were the time I spent singing in the chorus. When nothing else felt like it was going right, music was there. Music has helped me and saved me.
Soon, everyone will get to experience a much bigger school with a much bigger stage for more amazing concerts, but I will always remember that stage that I sang on with my former classmates. I remember the songs that we sang together, countless memories, and just how thankful I am for my amazing music teachers who helped make music have such a strong influence on my life.

We call Talent Show the biggest stage in our country. I stood on that huge stage, with my throat dry. As I stared at the audience, I knew this moment could change my life forever. When judges asked my name and I tried to speak, nothing came out. The crowd fell silent, waiting for the words to come. Finally I stuttered(结巴地说) my name and my age. “As you can tell,” I said, “I have a speech disorder…”
I’d love to sing and had already signed up for the school talent show in fourth grade when I started stuttering.Fortunately, most of the kids at my school were kind, and I was rarely made fun of. I tried speech therapy too, but it didn’t help. I feared to sing in the school talent show. Therefore, I decided to practice at home. To my surprise, the words came smoothly when I sang. And then I decided to learn to play the guitar, which was given as a birthday gift by my father.
One afternoon, I walked into the basement, where I kept my musical equipment. My eyes lit on the guitar. I picked it up and started playing. I opened my mouth, and the words came flooding out. Then I wrote a song called I Will Trust, telling the pain IP’d experienced. The next day, I filmed a video of performing the song and posted it online. Hundreds of strangers left comments that I had uplifted them with my music. Ever since, I’ve been writing songs.
Last year, I started college and majored in music production. When I saw Talent Show audition(试唱)announcement pop up on my computer, I wanted to have a try. Several months later, I was standing on that stage, trying to calm my nerves as I introduced myself, “I have a speech impediment.” I said, “It was definitely something that caused me to…” I took a long pause to find the words. “…to hide. But I found that I don’t stutter when I sing.”

I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house as I always did when I heard the piano. Before ringing the bell, I stood against the wall and sighed (叹息) sadly. I had been taught enough to read, understand, and even write some musical pieces, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lesson for free, so I felt it my duty to try.
The door opened. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to teach me. With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench. Then I frowned (皱眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match finger movements. I have to admit (承认) I played the piano without much thinking, just like a robot. I considered myself a mechanical pianist.
After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. “Jennifer, what are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant.
“Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play.
“See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water running beside you?”
Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she falls over!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, her horse sees the trouble,” Pasha continued, “and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. They make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse and promises she will never again wear princess skirts that weigh her down. She will only wear jeans and T-shirts from now on.” Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me.
I was happy and advised to try another one. Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the story in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.

10 . Music is a great connector; it brings people happiness. That’s why during the 2020 lockdowns (封闭) in the UK, when work for musicians dried up, singer Chloe Edwards-Wood came up with the idea of singing for people who were isolated (隔离) and struggling. That’s where Give a Song comes in.
Today, after 480 musical visits to over 8,000 people who need to isolate or live in care homes, the organisation is still spreading wellbeing and happiness.
At first, Edwards-Wood posted on Facebook about her idea and 15 people reached out to her including a leader from the Goldsmith Community Centre in Lewisham. She teamed up with the Goldsmith and Give a Song became a reality.
The first time Edwards-Wood performed on a stranger’s doorstep, she did so near her home along with another musician. “It was really terrific,” she said. “As soon as we started that first song, the barriers (障碍) came down. I remember thinking: ‘This is it! It works!’. The person loved it and people stopped to watch and listen. ”
Visits are organised through an online form. Usually 2-4 musicians go to the person’s home to perform a few songs with instruments. The visits usually last 15 minutes.
Edwards-Wood said, “I feel like music brings people together in some way, and it’s a way of communicating,” she said. “If you don’t have a common ground to have a conversation with someone, there’s always a song that can do it for you. ”
It’s not just the people that receive the concerts who benefit from them. It has also been life changing for Edwards-Wood. “I don’t know what my life would have looked like without this,” she said. “Being able to share all these moments of musical joy, I feel very lucky. ”
