1 . Entering competitions can be fun, and it’s a good way to hone(磨炼)your skills. While you can’t expect to win every time, you can increase your chances of winning with the right strategy and preparation. These are general tips that can be applied to your competition of choice.
Research and choose the right competition.
Don’t psych yourself out. Plenty of people get scared off by a competition’s requirements and don’t enter in the first place.
Learn your competition. Remember that you’re not competing with everyone in the competition. There may be many applicants and candidates, but there will only be a few contenders(竞争者)and finalists.
Make a checklist. Everyone has different productivity styles. If it helps, consider making a training checklist.
A.Stick to your training. |
B.Others drop out along the way. |
C.Give yourself encouraging reminders. |
D.Focus on understanding and beating them. |
E.This is the time to set reasonable and achievable goals. |
F.It provides you a sense of accomplishment along the way. |
G.It might be important if you don’t have a coach to guide you. |

4 . Join our Sail Design Competition and Help Us
Clean Ocean Sailing is a voluntary organization whose aim is to clean our coasts and raise awareness about ocean plastic pollution. They have repaired their sailing boat, Annette, to carry out their important mission and she needs a new sail and your help. This new sail will propel (驱动) her over thousands of miles for the next 10 to 15 years. We’re calling on artists with a vision for happy, healthy oceans to submit sail designs for the Clean Ocean Sailing team.
Design Specifications
● Submit a sail design that reimagines a more sustainable future and an ocean free from plastic pollutants. The background color of the sail will be black. The bigger your design, the better it will be! As the sail will only be seen from far away, small details won’t be seen.
● Make sure that there aren’t any important details on the borders of your design.
● This competition is open for anyone to enter — any age and any design capabilities! We are more than happy for designs to be drawn on an A4 piece of paper — just scan and send!
● If the winning design is hand drawn on paper, we will work with you and a designer to create a digitized version of your artwork!

9 . Many companies employ some form of ranking systems to assess employees’ performance, and then determine promotion accordingly. Performance rankings don’t necessarily involve competition for physical or financial resources, but they do create competition for another kind of resource: social status.
To better understand how social status ranking affects men and women differently, my colleagues and I conducted a series of lab experiments. The participants were asked to complete simple tasks and they were told that they would receive one Euro for each task they completed. This meant they were all equally rewarded, and were thus not competing for financial resources. Then, we told one group of participants that they would be ranked against each other based on their performance, while participants in the other group weren’t told anything.
We found that just anticipating that they would be ranked significantly impacted participants’ performance, and that the impact was noticeably different for men and for women. When participants weren’t told that they’d be ranked, men and women performed at essentially the same level. But when they were told that they would be ranked, men performed better than those who weren’t told anything, while women performed a lot worse.
It’s also found that the gender difference caused by competitive environments isn’t simply because of the misconception that women are naturally less competitive than men. Rather, these environments trigger the assumption that men are superior and that women should be kind to others. And it in turn leads to gender differences in performance.
In sum, these findings suggest that competitive social ranking systems can have a major effect on performance, and more importantly, they can have very different effects on men and on women. It’s hard to imagine a world in which competition is removed entirely —so how can organizations get the benefits of competitive environments while providing a fairer environment for their female employees?
