At Piedmont Middle School, a kid could run track or play tennis, but everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. Laura had dreamed of earning glory for the Falcons ever since the first grade, when her older brother Toni scored the winning goal in the county middle school championship. The day she joined the team as a sixth-grader, she felt like she could fly.
But, unfortunately, her joy didn’t last. She spent most of the season on the bench. It was all because of the huge mistake she made in her first game. She passed the ball in the completely wrong direction! Straight to an enemy in blue, who quickly shot it into the corner of the net, scoring. The coach benched Laura for the rest of the game. When the Falcons lost 1-0,she was crushed.
Now that the season was over, she just wanted to forget about soccer. She clearly wasn’t good enough to play with the Falcons, and that was that.
A few days later, Laura’s mother found her lying on the sofa, watching music videos on her . phone.
“You’d be better off praticing,” her mother said.
“What for?” Laura said, rolling her eyes. “It won’t help me. I need someone to watch me and tell me how I can improve. I can’t get better by myself.”
Sighing, her mom sank down on the sofa. “Laura, for every lock, there is a key. We just have to find it.”
After a moment, she added, “What if I film you during practice to help you find ways to improve?”
“But the season’s over, Mom. No more practice, remember?”
“The best players keep practicing even when the season’s over,” her mother said. “You remember Toni spending all summer bouncing a ball off his head in the driveway. He used to run ten miles a day in the Arizona summer sun. You think he did that for fun?“
“But to practice plays I need at least one other person,” Laura protested.
Her mother patted her on the knee. “We’ll find that key, too,” she said.

Ocean Awareness Writing Contest
Ocean Awareness Writing Contest provides a platform for young people to understand environmental issues through artistic creation and creative thoughts, explore their relationship with the changing world, and become advocates of positive change.
Competition time: The deadline for submission is June 10, 2024. Students can upload their submissions starting from December 24, 2023.
Suitable for students: The contest is an international competition, which is open to any student aged 11—18 in middle or high school.

Young Authors Writing Competition
Young Authors Writing Competition is sponsored by the English and Creative Writing Department at Columbia College Chicago. The competition has grown into a yearly international con test of high school writers. In the Poetry category, you may enter up to two files, but each can have 1—5 poems.

During the Halloween season, many people visit pumpkin (南瓜) fields or carve pumpkins. But paddle (用桨划) a 1,000-pound pumpkin in a race? On October 22 in Oregon, paddlers in Halloween clothes did just that.
The West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta took place on the lake in Tualatin, a small city outside Portland. Back in 2004, a club called the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers (PGVG) came up with the idea for the event. The PGVG wanted to alter their large pumpkins into boats and paddle them. They asked the city of Tualatin if they could use the lake for a party.
The first year, about 100 people showed up. Now, about 20,000 come to watch the races. “It’s just a good time to finally have some fun with these pumpkins that we’ve spent countless hours all year long trying to grow,” said Jim Sherwood, a champion pumpkin grower, who is one of the Regatta’s founders and organizers.
The PGVG provides pumpkins for the Regatta’s five races. This year, paddlers came from across the country and from as far away as France and Japan. “Surprisingly, it’s on a lot of people’s wish list to paddle a pumpkin,” said Heidi Marx, the event’s director for the city of Tualatin.
Just before the races began, the growers emptied the pumpkins. The paddlers dressed in holiday clothing jumped in, and the first race started.
Gary Kristensen from Happy Valley, Oregon, won the first race. He was dressed as the movie character Mrs. Doubtfire. It was Kristensen’s fourth year winning a pumpkin race. “Once everybody thinks you will win, it starts to give you a little bit of pressure,” he said. “Fortunately, my pumpkin was pretty fast.”
For the less competitive players, the Regatta was all about fun. “The best part is just watching all the families enjoying the day.” Marx, a player, said. People are going to remember it for a long time.”

8 . The 19th Asian Games was held in Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang Province from September 23 to October 8, 2023.
The Asian Games is the largest sporting event in Asia. Its predecessor (前身) was the Far Eastern Games. In 1948, Guru Dutt Sondhi, the leader of Indian sports, felt that the Far Eastern Games were not good enough to reflect the level of Asian sports and the unity spirit of Asian people, and suggested establishing the Asian Games so that all Asian countries could participate.
The Hangzhou Asian Games is the third Asian multi-sport event held in China, with 12,417 athletes from all 45 Asian countries and regions participating. Some rising sports that have recently gone viral among young people made their first appearance at this year’s Games, such as break dance and e-sports. Weiqi, a mind sport, has returned to the Hangzhou Games after a 13-year absence since it appeared at the Guangzhou Games in 2010. Certain regional sports in Asia, especially dragon boat racing, kurash, and sepak takraw, though not recognized as Olympic sports, were medal-awarded events at the Asian Games.
In the lead-up to the sporting event, the design details of the victory ceremony elements, including bouquets (花束), trays, and podiums, were revealed. The bouquet, named “Fruits of Victory”, blends traditional Chinese elements such as rice ears and lotus pods, signifying fruitful harvests, and wishes the athletes a journey of accomplishment and honor. The medal tray’s design is inspired by the ripples of the West Lake and describes the elegance of lakes and hills. The podium sports a purple rainbow on its outside, reflecting energy and innovation (创新). Its surface, painted in white, shows the spirit of unity, harmony and mutual success among Asian nations and regions.
With the Games fully prepared by organizers, it has surely impressed all the athletes and participants, leaving a legacy (遗产) of a smart and green event for people.
