How well are we in tune with the rhythm of life? In our busy day-to-day lives, we don’t often stop to ask ourselves this question. At least I don’t. And it wasn’t until I joined a competitive sporting event that I learned a most important lesson: we must place our mind in harmony with the natural order of things to be successful.
Let me tell you what happened.
I decided to take part in an International Marathon in my hometown last year. Being an ambitious person, I hoped to finish it within 5 hours, accompanied by my friend with whom I had trained.
The big day finally arrived. “Ready... set... bang” And we were off.
At first, we kept a rapid pace and ran nonstop. At this pace, we finished the first 20 kilometers in 2 hours and I thought running a marathon was a piece of cake. Then my running mate began to slow down. I urged him to keep running at the same pace but he said no, he wanted to conserve his energy. I felt I had partnered with the wrong person, therefore, I sped up and left him behind in the dust.
A few kilometers later, I began to understand his strategy as my pace slowed to a jog then a walk. After that I was incapable of moving another step. I was ashamed as more and more people passed by me. More than once I thought “Maybe I should quit.” I started to doubt my ability to finish this race.
注意:1.续写词数应为120左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At this moment, my running mate caught up with me and patted me on the back.

5 . Was there a Chinese soccer team at the Qatar 2022 World Cup? No. But one couldn’t miss Chinese technologies in and around the stadiums in this desert state: “mobile hotels” for having a rest, ponds for drinking water, the photovoltaic (光伏发电的) power stations for charging mobile phones with electricity, etc.
Did we forget something? Yes, even some stadiums were built by Chinese companies, while the gifts you could buy there, too, were made in China.
That was how China had participated in this World Cup and earlier matches, and might do so in the upcoming ones too: by providing products and services to the athletes and audiences. Those all impressed the world deeply with its technology and products.
While “Made in China” had left its stamp on earlier soccer World Cups and other sports events, what made the Qatar World Cup unique was the kinds of China’s technologies. For example, the Stadium 974, which was built by Chinese companies, was a movable “green stadium”. It could collect rainwater for future use and made the waste collected from the stadium into fertilizer (肥料). Besides, China had built an 800 MW photovoltaic station that constantly turns the rich sunshine in the Middle East into electricity for the stadium. “If those technologies had appeared in Russian 2018 World Cup, it would have been a much better one.” added a Russian football lover.
Another reason that had made it possible for Chinese companies to perform well in the World Cup was that China had developed a good economic growth. Although the whole world suffered from economic slowdown and recession because of the COVID-19 and other reasons, Chinese companies had largely continued to function normally.

6 . The Isles of Scilly Fooball League is the world’s smallest official football league, consisting of only two teams that play each other seventeen times a season.
As the home of football, England has always been crazy about the team sport, and the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago (群岛) of more than 140 islands off the southwestern tip of Cornwall, is no exception. Like many other regions of England, the Isles have their own football league- -the Garrison Gunners and the Woolpack Wanderers that play each other every weekend during a season,as well as in two yearly cups and the traditional ‘Old Men versus the Youngsters’ game played on Boxing Day.
But isn’t playing against the same team every weekend gets boring after a while? Players in the Isles of Scilly Football League will tell you that life “is only boring without football”. So as long as they have someone to play against, no one complains.
Interestingly, both teams only rely on the inhabitants of St. Mary’ s island as a recruitment(招募) pool for players. The annual draft is getting harder every year, as the island’s young continue to leave in search of better prospects (前途) on the mainland. And bringing in players from the other islands is a tough task considering the difficulty of crossing during storms and in the frequent fog.“Players do come from other islands but that in itself can lead to problems. If it is too dangerous to cross, then they can’t play,“ Leathbridge said.
The world’s smallest football league shot to fame in 2008, when Adidas came to St. Mary’s to shoot its “Dream Big” commercial. Football stars like Patrick Vieira, Daniele De Rossi, David Beckham were flown in for the shoot, and the idea of a two-team league really captured people’s imagination. Football enthusiasts, news outlets and major corporations have been coming here ever since.

7 . Once upon a time, when virtual races began on the running scene, I made fun of them. “Why would anyone want to do a virtual race?” I wondered. “What’s the point? You’re still running on your own and I do that all the time.”
Fast forward to the spring of 2020 when race after race was cancelled, and the goals that we had been going for simply disappeared into thin air. While my devotion to my sport was there, my enthusiasm for training without a foreseeable goal race was not. It wasn’t long before I found myself thinking about virtual races.
“In the same way that we support small businesses,” I told my husband Dave, “We need to support the race directors. Racing is their business. And they have been good to me. There are so many races that have helped me become the runner that I am today. The race directors are struggling right now, so supporting them by signing up for a virtual race is the right thing to do.”
The more I spoke with Dave about this, the more I understood virtual races. “And they help charities, too. Hundreds of charities depend on fundraising from road races. Right now, that isn’t happening and charities are being hit financially. So a virtual race helps the race organization and charities. It’s a win for both.”
After knowing the Toronto Women’s Virtual 10k, I registered and ran on the following Saturday. I ran longer than I needed to (11.25k) and my average pace was slower than my 10k race pace, but I didn’t care. I knew I was supporting a charity. Though I was exhausted, I just wanted to cheer.
Race organizations are trying to stay on their feet and, quite frankly, we need them to survive if we want to return to racing in a post-pandemic world. Now, more than ever, is the time for runners to come together.
1. How did the author react to virtual races at first?A.She showed great interest. | B.She thought poorly of them. |

C.They had greatly bettered her. | D.They were far from popular. |
A.Energetic. | B.Hopeless. | C.Stressed. | D.Excited. |
8 . For recreation league athletes, there's nothing worse than when one of your teammates drops out at the last minute. When a recreation league ice hockey(冰上曲棍球)team in Edmonton needed a goalie(守门员),they got a save from an unlikely hero.
Nelson Rego, who is 100% blind, plays blind ice hockey for the Edmonton “SeeHawks" and accidentally met another goalie, John Hunter, who was inquiring online about a chest protector. Later Hunter got injured, and trying to help his team find a goalie for a league game, he reached out on the Edmonton Goalies Facebook page.
“Nelson calls me, and he starts out with, 'Hey, how's the chest protector going?’" Hunter later shared about the remarkable story. "Then Nelson continues, 'By the way, I'm not sure if this is a good idea but I've learned that you're looking for a goalie substitute for your- league game tonight. What do you think about me playing?’"
The team was “all in”, so Rego got ready for his first-ever sighted league match.
According to the players, they didn't tell the referee until the puck(冰球)drop that their goalie was blind- information with which he didn't really know what to do.
In an interview with CTV Edmonton , Rego explains he keeps himself centered in the goal by measuring the distance between the posts with his stick and his glove. After he uses sound to key into where the puck is and if it's being challenged, all the while he follows verbal instructions from his loving wife Emelinda, in the stands telling the action.
The game was by no means a washout for Rego, because even though Rego's team lost, he hung in there and earned the respect and admiration of the team.
This remarkable night is just one step in Rego's hockey career and he wants to go further. Rego says, "If it's something you want to do, just do it. It's amazing to watch hockey, but it's even better to play it. ”
