文章大意:本文是记叙文。作者通过讲述自己的家庭与足球之间的故事,展示了足球背后所蕴含的文化意义。

1 . My family first moved to Colorado 22 years ago. Los Angeles was too expensive and it was difficult to find well-paying jobs and affordable housing. Colorado became our next dream place. Settling into a small town in the Front Range, my parents found hard jobs.

Growing up in this small town, I remember my parents working hard to get past the language barrier. My mom, especially, tried her best to ensure she knew all that she needed to know about like my parent-teacher meetings and extracurricular (课外的) activities. One of those extracurricular activities that I signed up for was football. At that age, football was cool and all, but I was more into playing Pokémon and other video games. Football didn’t draw me in.

Big football tournaments (联赛) would come around like the World Cup, the Copa América and the Gold Cup, and the Mexican National Team would play in these tournaments. I would sit there in our living room and unmindfully watch the games while my parents would go crazy with enthusiasm ( 热情). I would sit there and play my game. My dad would look over and tell me that I should be paying attention carefully to the game and that I should care more about whether Mexico would win the match than my video games.

Both of my parents’ workspaces were crowded (占满的) with other workers. My mom worked with people from all over Latin America. Everyone’s topic of choice at work would always turn to how their national football team was doing. It was a way to show pride in the countries where they had grown up.

A great rivalry (对抗) can make a hockey (曲棍球) game exciting. But it’s even better when both sides share the same goal. Students of Boston College (B.C.) and Boston University (B.U.) held a game for a good cause. 6 . Some people think that hosting international sports events is good for the country, while some people think it is bad. Discuss both views and state your opinion.

Along with the advancement of the globe and globalization, an increasing number of events are being held in various areas of the world to help connect countries, including sports competitions, and it causes a lot of opposite views. Some individuals believe that holding international sporting events benefits a country, while others believe that it has negative results.

On the one hand, there are a number of reasons why many residents think that hosting an international sporting event is detrimental. Firstly, there will be large gatherings of people, which makes governments have difficulty in controlling the crowd. Things against the law may happen because few people will notice, such as thieves stealing fans’ belongings. Furthermore, the brawls(吵架)might have occurred among too crazy supporters. Secondly, arranging a huge sports festival may cost a big amount of money, which can put a country under great pressure.

On the other hand, the host country might gain certain benefits. Above all, it will promote tourism. The large number of sports fans will allow the country to benefit from the costs of hotels, and other expenses resulting from the supporters during their visit to the host country. The host country also has the chance to improve the country’s image across the globe, which not only helps it attract a big number of foreign tourists, but also helps it strengthen its international dignity(尊严). Moreover, the fact that a country hosts international events attracts a great number of local audiences, whether or not they are sports fans, which will influence many people’s thinking, increasing their love and pride for their homeland.

In conclusion, I believe that organizing international sports will bring more benefits than harm to a country.

1. Why are international sporting events often held according to the passage?
A.They help countries live in peace with each other.
B.They can improve the connection among countries.
C.They help the hosting country present a good image.
D.They give sportspeople a chance to show their talents.
2. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “detrimental” in the 3rd paragraph?
A.Wonderful.B.Harmful.C.Unbelievable.D.Challenging.
3. Which of the following will benefit most by hosting an international sports competition?
A.Tourism.B.Country’s image.C.Local audiences.D.Hotels.
4. What’s the author’s attitude to hosting international sporting event?
A.Negative.B.Positive.C.Unclear.D.Neutral(中立的).

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了患肾病的跳高运动员钱尼成功重返运动场,她对自己的成绩感到满意,因为重新回到她喜欢的运动中已经让她很满足。

7 . The official line on Marie-Eve Chainey in the women’s high jump read “NH” — shorthand for “No Height” — not exactly a fitting designation for an athlete who truly jumped very high.

For some athletes at the Canadian track and field championships in August 2010, a prideful return meant posting fast times after a slow season. For Chainey, it meant returning to top competition after a nine-year battle with kidney (肾) disease. Three years ago, she was unable to walk and even had no strength to wash her hair.

As a 14-year-old, Chainey would often travel 820 kilometres from Kapuskasing to Toronto to train under coach Gary Lubin at York University. At 18, Chainey went to Spain to learn the language and continue her high-jump training. While there, she became so dizzy (晕) she had to be hospitalized. That’s when she got the news: Her kidneys were no longer working. She hasn’t known life without dialysis (透析) since.

Healthy kidneys remove waste products from the blood. In dialysis treatment, a machine cleans the blood at regular periods, for example, three times a week. Chainey has been using nightly dialysis, which works while she sleeps.

Since her original diagnosis, Chainey has had to face four returns and countless other difficulties, including going blind for two months. She was told over and over she’d never jump again because her muscles were too damaged. But for Chainey, jumping is like breathing.

“From when I got sick, the goal that I had was to just be back jumping,” she said. “Jumping was basically my happy place. Even now more so. Because I’m sick and there’s so much going on, when I go to high jump, I don’t think about anything else than just high jump and enjoying it. It is surely my getaway. I feel normal because I don’t have to think about anything else.”

So on the eve of the national championships, the 27-year-old was not about to be deterred by a difficult night of dialysis. “I’m very stubborn (执着), I’m very hard-headed … I just had to find a way that I would be able to jump, no matter what.”

Chainey certainly felt nervous at the championships; her hands wouldn’t stop shaking once the competition began. She didn’t clear the starting height of 1.50 meters, which she had managed to get over in practice. Still, you’d be hard pressed to find a happier last-place finisher anywhere.

“Just being out there, especially when they lined us up and they introduced us to the crowd, it was a special moment that I’ll always remember,” she said. “I didn’t feel comfortable at first because I didn’t feel I belonged. But although I didn’t get a height, I still feel I belonged there. It felt wonderful just to have the opportunity and experience this.”

Chainey says kidney disease has cured her of her perfectionism. “I’ve always been a straight A student, always done well in sports and piano,” she said. “So when I got sick, my life wasn’t perfect anymore. I had to learn how to live with what you have, that I had limits. That was a very good lesson for me, to know that things aren’t always perfect but you can still make the best of it.”

Lubin is not surprised by her determination. “She used to come down from Kapuskasing, a 12-hour train ride... in order to train. When I talk to my athletes about devotion, I say, ‘Don’t tell me you came from Burlington. You think that’s far? How about Kapuskasing?’ This is the type of person she is.”

1. Early on, how did Chainey prove her devotion to high jumping?
A.She went to Kapuskasing to train competitively.

C.She frequently travelled long distances to train at York University.
D.She competed even though she had received dialysis treatments.

4. Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined “deterred” in paragraph 7?
A.stoppedB.punishedC.confusedD.influenced

A.Chainey became dissatisfied with anything less than a win.
B.Chainey stopped using jumping as an escape from her troubles.

8 . Two roller skaters were crouched(蹲伏) low, knees bent and bodies pressed together, fighting to stay glued to prevent a third skater slip through and break their wall. This was a roller derby(轮滑阻拦赛) practice for the Tiny Terrors, a team of skaters aged 8-11 in the Gotham Girls Junior League of New York City. “They want to fight and get really fast, and they find so much confidence,” said Kristen Campbell, director of the junior derby program.

Roller derby is played with two teams of five skaters on a track. One player on each team serves as the jammer whose job is to race around the track and score points without getting blocked by the other team. The match is made up of two 30-minute periods that each consists of shorter plays or jams. Each jam lasts two minutes or until the lead jammer calls it off, usually a move made to stop the other jammer from catching up and scoring points.

You have probably heard of adults playing roller derby, but a growing number of young people are attracted by the fast-paced sport. Campbell owes the increase in interest partly to a popular novel called “Roller Girl.”

Campbell described the junior league as a shelter for girls who aren’t sure where they fit in at school. “I’ve had so many parents tell me their child was having trouble with anxiety or bullying(欺负) or that they didn’t fit into any sport or art club or whatever it is,” she said. “And then they find roller derby and everything is solved.”

Many of the girls said they got much more out of the sport than just exercise. As Campbell tells it, those extra lessons are really the point. Strength, confidence and body positivity have long been values of roller derby, even if it’s subliminal rather than open and direct.

Of course, like any contact sport, injuries are unavoidable.

“They don’t go for big hits,” Campbell said. “Now we focus more on hip blocking and using lateral(横向的) movement to block—leaning each other out with light contact.” Besides, the girls don’t mind the occasional bump. “It’s sort of like a medal,” Campbell said, smiling.

1. What can we learn about roller derby?
