3 . Witnessed by organizers, sports figures, performers and students, the flame for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games—housed in a red lantern—drew crowds of onlookers as it was escorted (护送)by volunteers into the ceremony held at Beijing's Olympic Tower. The flame arrived early on Wednesday, October 20 after being flown from Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, where it was lit two days earlier.

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will run from Feb. 4 to Feb. 20. Games events are scheduled in three zones—downtown Beijing, the capital’s northwest Yanqing district and co-host Zhangjiakou in Hebei province.

As an iconic cultural element of the Olympic Games, the torch relay plays a significant role in promoting the host's international image while spreading the message of peace, solidarity, friendship and health. Due to the pandemic, however, games organizers have cut back the traditional torch relay to a small-scale event. The relay will take place in three host areas and involve about 1,200 torchbearers. The shortened torch relay with reduced crowds will help ensure the health and safety of all participants as well as that of local communities.

The relay is scheduled for Feb. 2 to Feb. 4, with the route connecting landmarks, historical sites and major tourism attractions in Beijing and Zhangjiakou. The traditional offline event will make sure that people get to feel the warmth of the flame and get inspired by the Olympic spirit up close. An online version of the torch relay making use of virtual reality (VR)technologies is also planned for social media platforms. Although the length and duration of the torch relay has been reduced, this represents an innovative approach to maximize the benefits of the technology in connecting more people in an interactive way.

The designs of the torch, lantern and cauldron (主火炬)echo each other within a consistent concept that strikes a strong impression of dynamism and vitality. The lantern, which will be used for the flame exhibition tour, is based on the Changxin Palace Lamp, a bronze oil lamp from the Western Han Dynasty, while the cauldron features the same red and silver colors and cloud pattern as the torch. Drawing inspiration from the main cauldron for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, the torch for the Beijing 2022 Games is called the uflying ribbon".

1. How was the flame sent to the welcoming ceremony in Beijing?
A.On a tower.B.In a red lantern.
C.By a sports figure.D.Through VR technologies.
2. What is the third paragraph mainly about?

C.The torch relay is an iconic cultural element of the Olympic Games.
D.Games organizers must ensure the health and safety of all participants.
3. Why are VR technologies used in the torch relay?
A.To welcome more athletes to the relay.
B.To attract people to the tourism attractions.
C.To connect more people in an interactive way.
D.To make people feel the warmth of the flame close.
4. What do we know about the 2022 Winter Olympic Games?

8 . Imagine the feeling of swinging at a baseball going 100 miles per hour—without leaving your living room, or being in race car as it roars down the track, while you are sitting on the couch.

These are just some of the ways that sports business leaders say virtual reality (VR) will revolutionize how people train for and experience sports. Virtual and augmented(增强的)realities are together known as mixed reality (MR). “American footballers are already using VR to better train their minds and read the field,” Ludden said. “This can allow players to perfect their skills without risking injury.”

Canadian company D-BOX Technologies designs and produces moving seats found in cinema and theme parks. It is now moving into sports, and shows its Formula One (F1) racing simulator (模拟器). The seats stimulate the force of gravity, speed and every shaking as Fl champion Lewis Hamilton zips around city streets.

A simulation seat uses pre-programed data now. Someday, though, it could use real-time information sent by the car. “They could broadcast live content through a network in pop-up theaters around the world,” Ludden said. Say you want to experience the true stress of a batter being up against major-league baseball pitcher. “You can have a heartbeat added to the sensation on the seat and then you can feel it, boom, boom,” Maheu explained. “When he swings and hits the ball, you can have an impact.”

One day, fans around the world could physically experience every game from their favorite player in real time. Ludden said that current and near-future technology could create “augmented stadiums” for live audiences. Panasonic launched its “Smart Venue” plans which included the overlaying of graphics, advertisements, player statistics and replays on the field of play at a pro football game. “If you are seated in the cheap seats, you can see this really useful.” “Fans may someday join in stadium wide games, using the field as a virtual gaming platform,” Ludden added.

1. What does the underlined phrase “read the field” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Get off the playing field.B.Build up a football court.
C.Judge the situation on the field.D.Ask players to play on the spot.
2. What does Maheu think audiences can do in the future baseball game?
A.Enjoy live content in any theater.
B.Program the simulation seats in advance.
C.Control the force and speed of the baseball.
D.Experience the real time game with the player.
3. What does Ludden mainly describe in the last paragraph?
A.The origin of VR.B.A future stadium.
C.An advertisement platform.D.The expectations of audiences.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.VR can improve players' skills for sports.
B.VR increases fans' joy in the baseball game.
C.VR can improve sports experience for players and fans.
D.VR promises a new future for football players and games.

10 . Standing at the finish line, 70-year-old Bob Long spent a while reflecting on the achievement he’d just made. Behind him was the wild, endless Mongolian grassland extending into the distance. This American had just become the oldest person ever to complete and win the Mongol Derby, the world’s longest horse race.

Long, a rider all his life, entered the race after being inspired by All the Wild Horses, a movie based on the grueling event.

Fearing that he wouldn’t be able to complete it, he set about preparing his mind and body for this “hardest, toughest, most demanding thing you can do on a horse”, an annual 1,000-kilometer race that was recognized as the world’s longest horse race by The Guinness Book of Records in 2011.

Although Long had been riding horses for many years, the hardship and uncertainty of the task pushed him to his limit and forced him to depend entirely on his own will. The race organizers had provided an extensive support network to keep an eye on the participants from afar. Despite that, the physical strain of riding such a long distance made simple things like squatting (蹲) down at the end of the day almost impossible.

Along the vast race course there were unpredictable circumstances beyond Long’s control, however well prepared he’d been. Weather was one of them, which could switch from heavy rain to burning sun unexpectedly.

Above all else, the biggest obstacle was the state of mind. Without a living soul in sight, Long was desperate for interaction, guidance, and comfort. This feeling of loneliness accounted for his hope that one of his fellow competitors would catch up.

Regardless of the hardship, Long felt a sort of spiritual adventure while traveling through the wilderness. He was provided with some memorable moments while connecting with nature. Still holding the passion for riding, Long never dismisses the idea of competing in another Mongol Derby.

1. What distinguished Bob Long from other competitors in the Mongol Derby?
A.He rode the whole race course alone.
B.He was the oldest participant of the horse race.
C.He was most likely to enter the competition again.
D.He was made into The Guinness Book of Records in 2011.
2. What does the underlined word “grueling” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Pains-taking but senseless.B.Comfortable and pleasant.
C.Difficult and exhausting.D.Romantic but time-consuming.
3. What was the biggest challenge that Long faced during the race?
A.The changeable weather.
B.The mental state in the course.
C.The difficulty in finding the right route.
D.The physical strain of riding a long distance.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.An introduction to the Mongol Derby.
B.A review of a film based on the longest horse race.
C.The contributions Bob Long made to the horse race.
D.The experience of the Mongol Derby’s oldest winner.
