6 . Last summer, after finishing my work in China. I took the trip of a lifetime on the Trans-Siberian Railway (西伯利亚铁路). Leaving Beijing early on a Wednesday morning in July, my wife and I travelled through some awesome (令人惊叹的) countryside before we arrived in Moscow the following Monday.
The first part of the journey took us past the Great Wall and through the grasslands of Inner Mongolia. At the Mongolian border, we had a delay (耽搁) while the wheels were changed because the railway is different.
On our way to the capital, Ulan Bator, we saw herdsmen (牧人) on horseback looking after their cattle. There was a great thunderstorm as we crossed a vast open plain. Later we had a quick tour of Ulan Bator.
Next, the train took us into Siberia. After a stop at Irkutsk, a popular holiday resort (度假胜地), where a tour group left the train, we passed the great Lake Baikal. Later, we saw some lovely wooden houses in pretty and sunny countryside. This surprised us, as we had imagined Siberia as being covered with thick snow.
Over the next few days, we passed through Novosibirsk, Omsk and other cities in the heartlands of the Russian Federation. By now, our body clocks were losing their sense of time. We wanted to sleep and eat at the wrong time!
At last we reached Moscow. We were so tired that we slept for 16 hours that night. The next day we went sightseeing. We saw the Kremlin and some other magnificent (宏伟的) buildings in the Russian capital. Then, all too soon, it was time for us to return to our home in London.

For the past three years, the Sea Cadet teenagers who set sail were all male.Roger Noakes, who captained the boat, said this was the first time he’d taken out an all-female crew.
The girls asked for an all-girls trip in August this year. The crew set sail along with three adults, Noakes and two Sea Cadet representatives. The original plan was for the girls to sail 24 hours a day in rotating shifts (轮流换班) along the coast and then return.Things turned out differently, however. “The first night was rough because the wind was really hard. The waves were going up and down.” said Abby Fairchild, 16. “Everybody got seasick.” Noakes gave the girls the option (选择) of just sailing in the bay and not going into open water. “But they decided they were going.”
The teenagers then sailed a long way overnight and slept in shifts.“We’ve learned everything from steering (掌舵) the boat itself to putting up the sails to cooking while we have rough seas.” said 15-year-old Olivia Wilcox.
The teenagers stopped on land in Massachusetts. They didn’t make it to their original destination (目的地) in Maine where they were supposed to have a celebratory dinner, due to the weather and winds. They said they weren’t disappointed, however, as they’d learned a lot. “They learned about boating, and above all, they built confidence and character.”said Noakes.

The four men set off from the town of Apolo. But after walking for more than a week, they found there was no sign of the village. The three friends began to suspect that Karl didn’t really know where the village was.
So Kevin decided that he would raft (v.乘筏) down the river, and he asked Yossi to join him. Karl and Marcus agreed to go back to Apolo. The three friends agreed to meet in a hotel in La Paz.
The next morning the two pairs of travelers set off on their different journeys…
Yossi and Kevin soon realized that going by river was a big mistake. The river got faster and faster. The raft was swept down the river until it hit a rock. Kevin managed to swim to land, but Yossi was swept away. However, Yossi didn’t drown. He came up to the surface several kilometers downriver.
Kevin didn’t know if Yossi was alive or dead, but he started walking downriver to look for him. Yossi started walking upriver.
But after a week Kevin was exhausted from lack of food. Finally, he was rescued by two hunters. As soon as Kevin felt well enough, he paid a local man with a boat to take him up the river to look for his friend.
By now, Yossi had been on his own in the jungle for nearly three weeks. He was slowly losing his mind. Suddenly he heard the sound of a bee buzzing (发出嗡嗡声) in his ear. When he opened his eyes he saw that the noise wasn’t a bee. It was a boat. Yossi was too weak to shout, but Kevin had already seen him. It was a one-in-a-million chance, but Yossi was saved.
