My Winter Holiday Plan

Next week, I     1     (be) on my winter holiday. My whole family     2     (fly) to Beijing from Melbourne on Monday and arrive at 10:00 a.m.. After lunch, through the whole afternoon we     3     (visit) the Summer Palace. The next morning, we will visit the Palace Museum and we     4     (walk) and shopping along Wangfujing Street till the night. On Wednesday, we     5     (go) to visit the Great Wall. It will be a great experience for me to drive three hours among the mountains. Then we will go sightseeing in Shichahai and visit National Museum of China.On Friday, we     6     (make) a trip to Zhangjiakou and on Saturday morning, we’ll go back to Beijing. Most excitedly, we     7     (watch) Beijing Opera at the Mei Lanfang Theatre in the whole evening. Then on Sunday morning, we     8     (have) to return to Melbourne. I think we might be very tired but it must be absolutely worthwhile.

Li Daiyu and her cousin Liu Qian went to Canada to visit their cousins in Halifax on the Atlantic coast. They decided     1    (fly) to Vancouver and then take the train.

During their first day, as is typical of Vancouver, it rained. Later, they took a pleasant hike in a forest just a short     2    (distant) away.

The next morning, the two girls arose early to take the train to Lake Louise,     3    (pass) through the Canadian Rockies.     4    (see) from the train window, the mountains and forests of Canada looked massive. They spent the night, and then took     5     coach bound north through the Canadian Rockies to Jasper.

From Jasper, they caught the train towards Toronto. One of the train’s     6    (one) stops was in Edmonton. From Edmonton, the train     7    (head) southeast across the great Canadian Prairie. After another day on the train,     8    (eventual) they were back in an urban area, the city of Winnipeg. Night came again, and the train turned south towards Toronto. It was not until 9: 30 a. m. that they finally reached     9     capital of Ontario, Toronto. All     10     all, their trip from Vancouver to Toronto had taken a duration of four days.

Li Daiyu and Liu Qian were on a trip to Canada, a country with vast lands but     1     small population. They     2     (fly) to Vancouver and decided to cross the whole country by train. Before starting out, they devoted a couple of days     3     seeing the sights in Vancouver. Then they took the train to Lake Louise where they saw blue water which literally took their breath away with its     4     ( exception) beauty. Later, they took a coach bound north to Jasper where they saw many different creatures, deer, mountain goats, and even a grizzly bear     5     (include). From Jasper, they caught the train towards Toronto. They passed through Edmonton, the center of Canada’s huge oil and gas drilling industry,     6     there is also one of the largest shopping malls in North America. From Edmonton, the train headed southeast across the great Canadian Prairie,     7     (go) through two wheat-growing provinces. They didn’t anticipate seeing such an open country, and were     8     (true), amazed. The train thundered on, and there were red maple trees and frost on the ground, confirming that autumn     9     (arrive) in Canada. Eventually, it was not until 9: 30 a. m.     10     they reached their destination-Toronto. The whole journey took them four days.

Joe’s plane landed on time at Heathrow Airport. He had exactly one hour to get out of the airport and go across the centre of the airport and the centre of London to catch his train to Manchester. He hurried through the airport, and then raced     1     the taxi sign.

    2     (fortunate), at that moment, his luggage broke and dirty socks, shirts and underwear were all over the airport floor. Joe was so     3     (embarrass) that he quickly put everything back into his luggage.     4     (push) his way through the crowds of people, he finally made it to the taxi rank. He jumped into the nearest taxi, shouting, “Euston Station, quickly, please!” The taxi set off at such     5     high speed that Joe     6     (throw) backward,     7     made him hit his head against the glass. The taxi sped on and finally arrived in the city centre, and also the middle of a traffic jam! It would be quicker to walk there. Joe offered     8     (pay) the driver, got out of the taxi, and ran along the pavement and past all the shop     9     (window). At last, he could see the station opposite.

He     10     (reach) the station just as his train was leaving. He got on the train with seconds to spare. He sighed with relief — he would be home in time for Christmas.

The next day was clear and mild, and they were pleased to see the beautiful mountains looking out over the city. Last December my mother and I     1    (fly) to London. The first thing we did was to go on a bus sightseeing tour.

This is the best way to see all the sights and learn all about the history of a city. By the time the tour was over it was dark. The Christmas lights were very colorful. And     2     really impressed me was how so many people made     3    (they) way home through the heavy traffic on bicycles. I was looking forward to spending the next day in Oxford Street with all its     4    (amaze) shops. And what     5     experience that was! We bought a ticket for the underground and could go everywhere very quickly.

We spent all morning shopping and admiring the Christmas displays inside the shops and out in the streets. Then we went to a wax museum     6    (call) Madame Tussauds (杜莎夫人蜡像馆), which had a lot of wax     7    (figure) of famous people. My mother took a picture of me     8    (stand) between Prince Charles and Prince Harry. From there we took a taxi to Buckingham Palace, the home of the two princes, to watch The Changing of the Guard but     9    (fortunate) we couldn’t really see well as there were thousands of tourists waiting     10    (take) photos of the ceremony.
