• Do personalized quizzes with speaking.

Reviews from users

FluentU is a great method to learn a foreign language. We watch videos with subtitles and at any time, we can stop the video if we don’t understand a word or an expression. We click on for additional explanations. Then, we have a quiz to work the vocabulary. I find this method very interesting to improve and stay motivated.

—Estelle Jaouen

I appreciate being able to hear the pronunciation from a male and female voice. I think the mix of characters and pinyin are great and well-balanced. I love the fact that I’ve only been doing this for less than a month and I already know dozens of useful phrases and words!

—Maria van Eeden

I like the fact that it’s very dynamic and not grammar focused. Also, having many videos to learn from makes it even less boring no matter where you are as long as you have a smart phone. I like to just watch each video one time, pause at each sentence and try to remember words and sentences.

—Eduard Marius

The best thing about FluentU is that you have direct context for each new vocabulary that you learn. Repeating the dialogues is the way I learn. Also, that you can bring in your own vocabulary list and that the program searches for videos or material in which the words are included are remarkable!

—Jan Rehmer

7 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

For much of history, reading was a fairly noisy activity. Today, however, the majority of us bottle the words in our heads as if     1    (sit) in a library.

Recent studies provide enough evidence     2     the ancient art of reading aloud has a number of benefits, from helping improve our memories     3     strengthening emotional bonds between people.

According to research on the impact of reading on memory, people consistently remember words and texts     4    (well) if reading them aloud than if reading them silently. This phenomenon has been named the “production effect”, which means that producing     5    (write) words—namely, reading them out loud—improves our memory of them. Even just silently mouthing the words makes     6    (they) more memorable.

One reason why people remember the spoken words better is that it gives us     7     additional basis for memory. We are     8    (general) better at recalling events that require active involvement. For instance, producing a word in     9    (respond) to a question makes it easier to remember.

In time when our interactions with others and the large amount of information we take in     10    (be) all too transient(转瞬即逝的), perhaps it is worth making a bit more time for reading out loud.

10 . It can be really hard to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school. Only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That happened when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language.

At first, I felt a bit silly going on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, but then I realized that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we are given these basic texts to familiarize our brains with certain vocabularies and writing structures, and from there, we can learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to us as children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. Therefore, you can work out some words with your knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this did not work well. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter first and at the end of that chapter, highlight the new words and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before using a dictionary, you may be surprised at what you can understand merely from the context. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or whom the passage is referring to.
If you can find translations of the books you have read as a child, I would strongly advise you to read those if you are a complete beginner. However, if you feel a bit more confident of reading in English, I would personally recommend the series of Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling or any of the Roald Dahl's children's books.

2. What did the author think of reading children's books in the target language at first?

B.Why it is helpful to read children's books at first.
C.How to choose a proper book to match your level.
