文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了迪士尼公园独特的指路手势“the Disney point”的由来。

1 . Given the crowds of visitors and many attractions at the Disney parks, it's easy to get lost. Thankfully, you will always find a worker to point you in the right direction. When you do, you just might start to notice something unique about their body language—and it's just one of the many secrets Disney employees won't tell you.

Cast members, as park employees are called, are taught in their training to always point with two fingers instead of one. The first reason for this is that pointing with just the one index finger(食指), as most Americans do, is considered impolite in some cultures and countries. The Disney parks have always attracted many international visitors, so the friendlier two-finger gesture became the norm among employees, in an effort to be sensitive and welcoming to every person. Employees have even affectionately named it "the Disney point”. Michaela Paris, a former Disney employee, said the Disney point is a sign of respect.

"Disney receives plenty of foreign travelers to their parks. The typical single finger point is a symbol of disrespect and has a negative(负面的) meaning in many cultures. Therefore, Disney created 'the Disney point' to accommodate all of their guests, " Paris said.

Other sources say this way of pointing is related to Disney himself. According to the Huffington Post, it's actually how Walt Disney himself used to point things out to visitors, because he usually had a cigarette balanced between the two fingers. You won't find cast members today smoking a cigarette—there's no smoking allowed for anyone, employees or guests, once you are inside the entrances at Disney parks—but the tradition of pointing with two fingers still stands.

Keep an eye out for the statue of Walt and Mickey doing "the Disney point" next time you're at Disney World. Meanwhile don't miss other such rules that all Disney employees must follow.

1. When will a visitor probably notice "the Disney point"?
A.When asking the way.B.When entering the park.
C.When greeting foreigners.D.When smoking a cigarette.
2. What does “the Disney point” refer to?
A.A gesture.B.An employee.C.A park.D.A statue.
3. What does the underlined word "accommodate" in paragraph 3 mean?
A.offer space to.B.put up.C.provide food for.D.adapt to.

Meeting with other cultures is actually very interesting and fun. It is certainly a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.

The gesture “thumbs-up” is commonly misunderstood. In English, it is known as “thumbs up”, though the action is commonly performed with only one hand. English-speaking Caucasians use it to signal “OK”, which is the same meaning as OK ring gesture. The two can in fact be used instead of each other.

To most Europeans, it signals the number 1, since they count from 1 to 5 beginning with the thumb for 1 and ending with the little finger for 5. Other nationalities, like Americans, usually start counting on the index finger for 1, and end with the thumb.

Avoid using this gesture in Southern Sardinia or Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While Americans, the British and Australians would use the thumbs-up sign to signal for hitch-hiking, this message will not encourage a Northern Greek driver or motorist to stop to give them a ride.

What does the “OK” sign mean to you? If you are an English-speaking Caucasian, it means “OK” or “good”. The French understand it as “zero” or “worthless”. The Japanese would read it as “money”.

Don’t show this gesture to a Greek. Ancient Greek vases have been found showing this gesture as an insult. So, if you use this sign in Greece to tell a person that he is “OK”, he will feel insulted. Other regions where this sign can be insulting are Turkey, Malta, Sardinia, Tunisia, Russia, the Middle East, Paraguay, and Brazil.

1. What does the “thumbs-up” gesture show among English-speaking Caucasians?
A.Agreement.B.Respect.C.Calmness.D.Disappointment.
2. What number does the thumbs-up most probably stand for in America?
A.1.B.2.C.4.D.5.
3. What should be avoided if you are in the Middle East?
A.Asking for a lift.B.Giving the “OK” sign.
C.Trying to speak English.D.Showing the gesture “thumbs-up”.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The function of body language.B.How to communicate with foreigners.
C.The different meanings of two gestures.D.The importance of learning about other cultures.

5 . When you are in another country, it is important to know the language, but it is equally important to know how to communicate nonverbally(不用语言地). Before saying anything, people communicate nonverbally by making gestures. According to an investigation(调查), only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal. When people don’t know the language, the most common way to communicate is through gestures. However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world.

In the United States, for example, nodding your head up and down means “yes”. In some parts of Greece and Turkey, however, this motion can mean “no”. In southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying “I’ve heard you”.

In ancient Rome, when the emperor wanted to spare someone’s life, he would put his thumb up. Today in the United States, when someone puts his/her thumb up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Sardinia and Greece, the gesture is insulting and should not be used there.

In the United States, raising your clasped(握紧的) hands above your head means “I’m the champion” or “I’m the winner”. It is the sign prizefighters make when they win a fight. When a leading Russian statesman(政治家) made his gesture after a White House meeting, Americans misunderstood and thought he meant he was a winner. In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship.

There are other nonverbal signals that people should be aware of when they go to another country, such as the distance to maintain between speakers. Americans stand closer to each other than English people. English people don’t like touching somebody or being touched. Now in America, touch is important. Friends touch each other on the arm, for example. They often put an arm around a friend when they say “hello” or “goodbye”.

1. It is very important to know how to communicate nonverbally when you are in another country because______.
A.most people speak different languages
B.much of our communication is nonverbal on many occasions
C.people usually make gestures before saying anything
D.it’s easy to learn how to express oneself through gestures
2. If a native in Singapore nods his head up and down when you talk to him, his motion means”_____”.
A.yesB.noC.that’s all rightD.I’ve heard you
3. When the Russian leader put up his clasped hands after the meeting at the White House______.
A.he meant Russia was the winnerB.he was insulting America
C.he made a show of friendship to AmericaD.he in fact meant nothing at all
4. The gesture of putting one’s thumb up shouldn’t be used when you are travelling in______.
A.ItalyB.the United StatesC.GreeceD.Southeast Asia

10 . Mirroring body language is a way to bond and to build understanding. It is a powerful tool that we use without even knowing it.

The most obvious forms of mirroring are yawning and smiling. When you see someone yawn, you are likely to yawn immediately. Smiling is also pretty contagious-seeing a smiling person makes you want to smile too.

Mirroring body language is a nonverbal way to say “I am like you, I feel the same”. Research shows that people who experience the same feelings are likely to trust, understand and accept each other.

Women have the natural ability to pick up and understand body signals. Therefore, it is not surprising that a woman is more likely to mirror another woman than a man is to mirror another man. That's why women are regarded as better talkers, even if they might not really have more close friends.

It is interesting that when a man tries to mirror a woman's body language while she is talking, he may seem to her as caring, intelligent and attractive.

Mirroring body language is an excellent way to build trust and understanding quickly. If you want to set up a connection with a new person, mirror his or her gestures, sitting position, tone of voice and talking pace. This will make them feel that there is something about you that they like.

While mirroring body language gains you acceptance, you still need to take into consideration your relationship with the person you are mirroring. If you are in a lower social position and are mirroring the body language of your boss, he will view you as arrogant. However, if you want to defeat those who are trying to prove superior to you, mirroring their body language will help defeat them and change their position.
