文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了自闭症相关的知识,包括自闭症的主要特征,发病原因等。

2 . Have you ever heard of “children of the stars”? It might sound mysterious, but the expression refers to children with autism (自闭症). World Autism Awareness Day falls on April 2. It was initiated by the United Nations to raise awareness and promote acceptance of people with autism.

According to the US-based Autism Research Institute, autism is a disorder with symptoms (症状) that appear within the first three years of life. The condition is believed to involve deficits (缺陷) in social communication and interaction as well as restricted, repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities.

Meng Lingdi, whose daughter was diagnosed (诊断) with autism at 2 years old, shared that her daughter wouldn’t pay attention to her when Meng asked her to do something. “She made less eye contact with people compared to other kids,” Meng added.

Children with autism also suffer from physical pain. “Many children with autism experience epilepsy (癫痫) due to differences in brain activity,” said Sun Zhongkai at Beijing Stars and Rain Education Institute for Autism. Epilepsy among people with autism becomes even more prevalent (普遍的) starting from adolescence (青春期), he added.

At present, the precise cause of autism remains unknown, but research indicates that it is likely a result of a mix of developmental, genetic (遗传的), and environmental factors.

“According to our statistics, older parents are more likely to have autistic children than younger parents,” said Sun. “If the first child in a family has autism, the chances of subsequent children also having autism are about 10 times higher than in families where the first child is not autistic. The likelihood of identical twins both having autism is also significant.”

Although autism is a lifelong condition, there are various treatments available. According to Liu Wei, a teacher at the institute with 20 years of experience in teaching people with autism, it is crucial not to view people with autism with a sense of strangeness. Affirmations (肯定) from others will make them feel proud, enabling them to interact with others more effectively. For those close to autism sufferers, such as friends or family, it’s useful to establish certain principles for the individual, such as what is permissible and what is not. They should also have a deep understanding of autism and how to deal with it, which, for children with autism, may “benefit them for a lifetime,” said Sun.

1. What is the purpose of the World Autism Awareness Day’s foundation?
A.To make people with autism easier to get various treatments.
B.To arouse people’s attention to autism and make people with autism easier to be accepted.
C.To make people with autism have a deep understanding of autism.
D.To enable people with autism to interact with others more effectively.
2. What is autism primarily characterized by?
A.High anxiety.B.Sleeping disorders.
C.Communication difficulties.D.Exceptional athletic skills.
3. What can we know about autistic children with epilepsy?
A.They are more active physically.B.They exhibit heightened sensitivity.
C.Their condition worsens with age.D.Their brain functions unusually.
4. According to the text, which factor may be linked to an increased likelihood of having a child with autism?
A.Gender of the child.B.Age of the parents.
C.Education of the parents.D.Environmental pollution.
5. How should we approach individuals with autism, according to the text?
A.Offer encouragement and support.B.Communicate our ideas clearly to them.
C.Be as generous as possible.D.Allow freedom in their choices.

文章大意:本文的体裁是说明文。主要探讨了人们的睡眠类型(早晨型或夜晚型)与抑郁症发展风险之间的关系,特别是针对女性护士的一项研究。

3 . There are a fair few benefits of waking up early. There is increasing evidence (证据) that suggests morning people could be healthier. According to a new study, women in particular who wake up earlier could be less likely to develop depression. Researchers wanted to see if a woman’s chronotype (睡眠类型) — whether they were an “early bird” or “night owl” — had any influence on their risk of depression (抑郁).

They used data from a large study that recorded the health of more than 32.000 female nurses in the US, with an average age of 55 for-nearly thirty years. In 2009, they were asked to tell whether they were a morning or evening person, then they followed up after four years to see how many of them developed depression. During that time there were 2,581 new cases of depression, and those morning types were somewhere between 12 and 27% less likely to develop depression.

The results show that someone’s chronotype could be a reason for developing depression, but the risk is small. The study was based on a special group of people, who are in a highly emotionally and energetically demanding job, and so there is no certainty that the risk of depression is influenced by their sleeping habits. The results are not necessarily suitable for other women of the same age, or men, or children, either.

However, the study does raise some interesting points of discussion. For example, recent research found that disrupting (干扰) our body clock can increase our risk of mood disorders like depression. Nurses work long hours and they often work at night. That may cause psychological problems.

Research has also found that too much sleep and too little sleep are both likely to be bad for your health, and the best way to make sure you’re getting the right amount is to stick to a schedule. That means that even if you have a late night, you should try and get up at the same time every day.

While the answer isn’t as simple as early birds being healthier than night owls, what is clear is that sleep is important to avoiding diseases.

1. Which of the following is TRUE about the research?
A.The subjects of it are all female nurses all over the world.
B.Researchers have followed the subjects for nearly thirty years.
C.Those people who got up early were less likely to have depression.
D.Those people who aged over 55 were more likely to develop depression.
2. What can we infer from the study results?
A.They are one-sided.B.They are useless.
C.They are correct.D.They are reasonable.
3. According to the passage, nurses are at risk of psychological problems because ______.
A.they have much work to doB.their body clock is disordered
C.they always sleep lateD.their sleep time is short
4. What does the fifth paragraph mainly suggest?
A.Working less time.B.Not working late at night.
C.Sleeping as long as possible.D.Keeping the body clock.
5. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The benefits of waking up early.B.Is sleeping earlier better than late?
C.Nurses are likely to have depressionD.Can keeping early hours prevent depression?

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一项新的研究发现,科学家们发现喷水鱼能够区分人类面孔。

4 . We know that our pet dogs and cats can recognize our faces, but our pet fish? A team of scientists from the UK and Australia have discovered that archerfish (喷水鱼) can distinguish human faces!

This marks the first time that a species of fish has shown such an ability. Such abilities have been previously shown in birds, but unlike fish, they have been proven to possess structures similar to the neocortex (大脑新皮层), the researchers added.

“Being able to distinguish between a large number of human faces is a surprisingly difficult task,” Dr. Newport said, “mainly due to the fact that all human faces share the same basic features.”

During their experiments, Dr. Newport and her colleagues presented archerfish with two images of human faces, and trained them to choose one by spitting jets (喷射流) of water at that picture. Next, the fish were presented with the familiar face and several that were unfamiliar, and were able to correctly pick the one that they had been trained to recognize, even when features such as head shape and color were removed from the selected pictures.

In the first experiment, the archerfish were tasked with picking the previously learned face from a group of 44 new ones, which they did with 81 percent accuracy. In the second, the researchers decided to make things a little harder. They took the pictures and made them black and white and evened out (使平均) the head shapes. You would think that would throw the fish for a loop. But no, they were able to pick the familiar face even then-and with more accuracy: 86%!

“Fish have a simpler brain than humans and entirely lack the section of the brain that humans use for recognizing faces. Despite this, fish may still be capable of finding the face they are trained to recognize,” Dr. Newport said, “The fact that archerfish can learn this task suggests that complicated brains are not necessarily needed to recognize human faces.”

1. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Species.B.Birds.C.Fish.D.Abilities.
2. The research shows that ______.
A.archerfish are cleverer than other fishes
B.all fishes can be trained to recognize human faces
C.complex brains are not necessary for facial recognition
D.it is very difficult for animals to recognize human faces
3. We can infer from the text that ______.
A.archerfish have a good memory
B.the neocortex is linked with visual ability
C.archerfish can only recognize human faces
D.People’s similar physical appearance limits archerfish’s facial recognition
4. The text is likely to appear in ______.
A.a biology textbookB.a medical report
C.a science fictionD.a science magazine

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。啤酒和鸡蛋在厨房里很常见,科学家通过研究发现它们也被以前的艺术家添加在绘画颜料中,用于保护画作。

5 . Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists recently found that they were used in historic paintings, too.

To preserve Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what was the composition of ancient paint or what it was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the original artwork.

According to their paper published in Science-Advances, grains and yeast (酵母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent (用过已废的) grains and yeast.

The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.

Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help preserve artworks.

The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the proteins in the yolk helped to slow down the oxidation (氧化) of the paint and reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth.

However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists. They were willing to accept that their work would be preserved for a longer period.

The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can “appreciate what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.

1. What is the main purpose of the research mentioned in the passage?
A.To find out how eggs can help to protect the artworks.
B.To study the history of beer and egg consumption in Denmark.
C.To explore the benefits of beer and egg consumption for artists.
D.To research the composition of ancient paint for protecting Danish paintings.
2. Why were beer by-products used in historic Danish paintings?
A.To keep the paintings clean.
B.To help the colors stick better.
C.To give the painting a different look.
D.To make the paintings more colorful.
3. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Kept.B.Shared.
C.Controlled.D.Discovered.
4. How did yolk’s proteins help preserve artworks?
A.By adding color to the paint.
B.By making the paint dry faster.
C.By wrinkling the paint with oil.
D.By slowing down the oxidation of the paint.
5. According to Ken Sutherland, the research like this provides      .
A.preservation techniques for paintings
B.deeper understanding of the artworks
C.more appreciation for artists’ materials
D.insights into the history of art materials

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是科学告诉我们一个成年人需要多长时间才能交到一个新朋友,并且建议要想发展成为朋友需要将这种关系带出工作场所。

6 . When you are a kid, gaining a best friend forever can happen in a single play date. But when you grow up to be an adult, making and maintaining friendships gets harder. So how much quality time (优质时光) do you need before that stranger becomes your friend? A new study recently found that, on average, it takes about 50 hours with someone before you consider them a casual (感情不深的) friend, about 90 hours before you become real friends, and about 200 hours to become close friends.

The study’s author Jeffrey Hall, a communications professor, invited adults who are eager to make friends to take part in two experiments — people who had just moved to a new city in the past six months and college freshmen. He asked them to rate and track the degree of closeness and time spent together with a new person. “Results suggest that the chance of changing from casual friend to real friend is greater than 50% after around 80-100 hours together,” said Hall.

The study found that the amount of time spent talking together, or the fact that you spent time at school or work with them, was unrelated to friendship closeness. “It is really easy to spend a lot of time with people as they are routinely in the same place at the same time as you,” Hall said. “However, my study shows you can have workmates you spend hundreds and hundreds of hours with and still not develop a friendship.”

You do not need to become best friends with your workmates to develop meaningful relationships with them. But for those of us hoping to change from “girl who I eat lunch at work with” to “friend I can depend on,” Hall suggests that you need to take the relationship out of the workplace for it to become a friendship. The participants who did activities outside of work with someone, such as being invited to have lunch in their home, were more likely to develop deeper relationships with them.

1. What is the new study mainly about?
A.Ways of making friends in a new environment.
B.Why people need to make different friends.
C.Different levels of friendship.
D.How long it takes to develop a friendship.
2. What do we know about the participants in the study?
A.They knew each other before.
B.They had difficulty in making new friends.
C.They were in great need of friends.
D.They started their new life in the same city.
3. What does Hall want to tell us in paragraph 3?
A.It is easy to get along well with classmates.
B.Friendship closeness is related to communication.
C.It is unnecessary to become best friends with workmates.
D.Just spending enough time together doesn’t result in friendship.
4. What does the underlined word “routinely” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A.Usually.B.Impressive.
C.Seldom.D.Confidently.
5. Which can help people build deeper relationships with workmates according to Hall?
A.Joining the same work team.
B.Having lunch at work with them.
C.Inviting them to your home after work.
D.Sharing work experience with each other.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了研究表明青少年睡前玩手机有很多害处,建议家长给孩子们树立良好的榜样。

7 . Experts recently suggested that teens should start having early bedtimes. Before you think it as a habit suited only for young kids, consider that there are serious advantages in being well-rested. And now, even more research suggests that putting phones away before going to sleep is important to teens’ well-being.

A new study from Seton Hall University School of Health and Medicine Science found that 62 percent of kids used their smart phones before bed, and it’s causing less sleep and poor performance in school.

Those teens who text before bedtime tend to go to sleep later, and get up later in the morning. Such behavior can be associated with mental health illnesses like depression or anxiety. Besides, once teens do receive a text, experts found, they tend to respond right away. Then the text conversation continues — leading to an even later bedtime.

The study’s co-author Dr. Peter Polos says this leads to excessive stimulation (过度刺激) at night. Light from electronic devices can prevent the secretion (分泌) of melatonin — a hormone (荷尔蒙) that promotes sleep, which makes sleep difficult in the face of overuse of smart phones at night. It’s true! More screen time means less sleep time; other studies have suggested the same idea.

As for a final piece of advice, Dr. SushanthBhat says, since getting the proper amount of sleep is very important for brain development and learning in the teenage years, our study should encourage parents and guardians (监护人) to limit the smart phone usage of kids at night. Keep in mind that teens aren’t the only ones addicted to their phones! Adults can also benefit from setting a tech curfew (宵禁) for themselves. After all, kids learn by example!

1. What is the text mainly about?
A.How to promote sleep.
B.The disadvantages of phone usage before bed.
C.The advantages of going to bed early.
D.How kids learn from their parents.
2. Who are likely to go to sleep later according to the text?
A.Kids having text conversations before bed.
B.Kids putting their phones away at night.
C.Kids studying their lessons hard at school.
D.Kids exercising with friends after school.
3. Melatonin can ________.
A.wake people from a sleepB.help people fall asleep
C.lead to later bedtimesD.make sleep difficult
4. The author advises parents to ________.
A.learn from their kids
B.get rid of smart phones
C.try to benefit from hi-tech development
D.set a good example to their kids
5. The text is most probably taken from a ________.
A.lesson planB.book review

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了一种为旅行者带来好运的习惯——“坐在行李箱上”,它还有很多每个人都能体验到的好处。

8 . The minutes leading up to a vacation are often an exciting time. As people check their homes and pack the last items into their suitcases, they often dream about the fun times that lie ahead. In Russia, however, there is one final step that people take to ensure a good trip. Before they walk out the door, Russians take a brief pause and silently sit on their suitcases for a few moments.

“Sidet’na chemodanakh” or “sitting on suitcases” is an ancient custom that will be a familiar ritual to anyone who grew up in Russia, or any migrant family that obeyed motherland customs. This unusual ritual started hundreds of years ago. In the years before Christianity, Russians believed that good and evil spirits lived inside their homes. They thought that the key to living a good life was to keep these spirits happy at all costs. If a person rushed out of his or her home before a trip, there was a good chance they would forget something. When that person returned a few minutes later to get it, they would disturb the evil spirits in the home. In response, the spirits might follow them out the door and accompany them on their trip. Since the spirits were offended by the person, they would bring them bad luck and possibly cause them harm.

Although many years have passed since suitcase sitting began, the practice continues to this day. As the Soviet Empire grew during the Cold War, suitcase sitting even spread throughout Eastern Europe. Although it is rooted in superstition (迷信), suitcase sitting is actually quite practical. It can prevent people from forgetting passports, plane tickets, or other items that are needed during trip. In addition, it also provides a brief moment of relaxation that can help get a journey started on the right foot. Besides that, if someone has packed too many clothes, suitcase sitting can help get it zipped up.

1. What is this passage mainly about?
A.A spirit that might annoy anyone living in Russia.
B.A popular vacation spot in ancient Russia.
C.An old tradition that is based on scientific research.
D.A habit meant to bring good luck to travelers.
2. What does the underlined word “ritual” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.RightB.JusticeC.TraditionD.Characteristic
3. Why do Russians sit on suitcases?
A.To test the strength of their suitcases.
B.To keep spirits from following them.
C.To invite good spirits to come on vacation.
D.To ask spirits to protect their homes.
4. What is NOT true about suitcase sitting?
A.It spread superstition across the world.
B.It is practiced outside of Russia as well.
C.It started in Russia many years ago.
D.It is not based on Christian ideas.
5. What does the writer imply about suitcase sitting at the end?
A.It’s an old practice that should be forgotten.
B.It is necessary for travelers’ right foot.
C.It makes people stressed out before a trip.
D.It has benefits that everyone can experience

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了微创手术的优点,让它成为外科手术最好的选择。

9 . There was a time when the word “surgery” used to scare people, and they would try their best to avoid a surgical procedure. The feeling is understandable, as the idea of a large cut on your body is discomforting in many ways. However, thanks to the advances in medical science, surgical techniques have improved considerably.

Compared with the traditional open surgery, minimally invasive surgery (微创手术)has several benefits to offer. Not only is the procedure quick and less painful, but also ensures rapid recovery. Now, surgical procedures, either big or small, are done within a few minutes to a few hours. The best part about the minimally invasive surgery is the painless procedure. The advanced techniques are helping with quality treatments to patients who have to undergo (进行) surgical procedures.

Unlike the traditional open surgery that requires a large cut, a surgeon makes multiple tiny cuts of less than an inch. For the process, the surgeon uses small surgical instruments, such as a tiny tube with a mini camera at one end. Once the surgeon marks the cuts, he then passes the tiny tube through one of the cuts. The doctor monitors the images taken by the mini camera on the screen and uses them as a reference. These images give the surgeon a clear picture of the area undergoing the surgery. After the surgery, the surgeon cleans the cuts and sometimes places a bandage for additional support.

Minimally invasive surgery has become the first choice of patients with multiple medical conditions. In fact, it would not be wrong to say that these surgeries are now the standard surgical procedures for many routine operations. Whether you have a minor issue or want a surgical intervention for a major health condition, it is the best option.

1. What makes people afraid of surgery?
A.The large cut.B.The great risk.
C.The high expense.D.The slow recovery.
2. What can surgeons use as a reference in the surgery?
A.The previous treatment plan.
B.The images by the mini camera.
C.The standard surgical procedures.
D.The advice from other surgeons.
3. Who might benefit most from the minimally invasive surgery?
A.Patients in need of additional support.
B.Patients lack of regular checkups.
C.Patients with several medical conditions.
D.Patients scared of surgical instruments.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards minimally invasive surgery?
A.Disapproving.B.Objective.
C.Doubtful.D.Supportive.
5. Where is the passage probably from?
A.A medical magazine.
B.An online medical forum.
C.A technique discovery.
D.An advertisement for a medical product.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了幻想在人类社会中的重要性。

10 . My son is doing an MA (Master of Arts) in music, so for his final project he decided to explore the role of fantasy in society. He emailed home for help. “Naturally we all love escapism,” he wrote, “but the important question is why? You’re a fantasy writer, Mum, got any ideas?”

This is what I came up with: Fantasy is important for the human mind. It begins as the psychological process by which a child learns to fill the space between knowledge, reality and experience.

When we were small children, trying to get to sleep, a creaking (嘎吱响的) floorboard was really frightening. Who or what could be making the noise? The only way to make sense of the experience was to fantasise : there’s probably a tiger under the bed.

Children frighten themselves silly like this, but while they have no knowledge of central heating pipes swelling (管道膨胀), they have to use make-believe to fill the space between experience and knowledge. As time passes and children learn about the effect of heat on pipes and floorboards, they will often prefer the tiger story. Fear, within a safe environment, is fun.

As they grow, children need stories that include war, falling in love, becoming a hero and saving the world. They provide a framework (框架) within which developing emotions can awaken, ready for “real life”   when it hits.

Louis Sachar’s Holes is a great modern explanation of this, but the best ones are those we make up for ourselves. A friend who is a child psychologist was treating a boy who’d been mistreated by a relative. The child loved this person, and was puzzled and hurt by what had happened, so my friend wrote him a story about a baby rabbit that loved his uncle, a wolf. One day, the wolf hurt him. The rabbit remembered the love, but he also understood that wolves were dangerous, and had to be avoided. The child went away with the tools to reconcile (和解) the irreconcilable.

Taking one step away from reality to that “safe” place of pretend prepares us to look at the world’s hard realities in the face.

1. Which question puzzled the author’s son?
A.Do people love escapism?
B.Why is fantasy so important?
C.Is escapism good for people?
D.What is the purpose of fantasy music?
2. How can fantasies about creaking floorboards benefit children?
A.By helping them to get to sleep quickly.
B.By encouraging them to find out the truth.
C.By helping them to overcome fear on their own.
D.By allowing them to explore their feelings in a safe way.
3. Which of the following about fantasy would the author agree with?
A.It frees kids of concerns.
B.It makes people emotional.
C.It helps people spot danger.
D.It prepares kids for real life.
4. How did the child psychologist’s make-up story turn out?
A.It worked well.
B.It confused the child.
C.It made the relative apologise.
D.It became more popular than Holes.
5. Which best describes the author’s tone in the text?
A.Approving.B.Concerned.C.Humorous.D.Doubtful.
