Time to Upgrade Phone? You Bet!

“Is it high time to buy a 5G phone now or should I wait?” this question     1     (throw) at me constantly by friends ever since China commercialized 5G last October.

First of all, China now has a wide 5G coverage, which makes     2     convenient for consumers to use 5G smartphones. Currently, 5G signals are available in all prefecture-level cities in China, and     3     (consume) in more than 300 cities are able to access 5G signals when they are in subways,     4     (take) a walk in parks or shopping at malls.

Moreover, telecom carriers have announced their plans to cover key counties and towns     5     5G signals next year, which will attract more people to 5G smartphones.

At the same time, the prices of 5G data packages are also dropping     6     (significant) from the starting price of more than 120 yuan ($18.3) per month at the start of this year to about 90 yuan now, making the tech     7     (afford) for more people to enjoy the 5G service. There are more 5G smartphone models to choose from — some of them may remain much too expensive,     8     the cheapest one now costs only 999 yuan.

China’s big three telecom carriers are also working on a new 5G-enabled messaging service, which is designed to replace current short messages with a system     9     is richer, provides phone book polling, and can transmit in-call multimedia.

So, yes, it’s high time that I     10     (buy) a 5G smartphone indeed.

2 . Nowadays we feel that we have become dependent on our computers, mobile phones and other media, and that we need these things to think and act creatively. But a recent study seems to indicate that the best thing we might be able to do for our creativity is to leave all of these high-tech (高科技) toys at home and just take a walk in the woods.

In the study, David L. Strayer and his fellow researchers worked with 30 men and 26 women who were about to go on a four-day hike, during which they would be taken away from all of the creative toys mentioned above. Before the hike began, Strayer gave the participants (参与者) a standardized Remote Associates Test, which is often used to test creativity and creative problem-solving abilities. After the hike, they were given the test again. The result showed that there was a 50% improvement in the participants’ creative problem-solving abilities. As Strayer says, “This is a great effect.”

This study is the first to document systematic changes in higher-level cognitive (认知的) function connected with entering nature. The researchers suggest that the effect nature seems to have on improving creative thinking is due to the lack of distractions (分心的事) in the natural environment — there are no ringing phones, noisy computers, etc. Other studies have shown that the colour green — the colour of much of nature — is felt by the brain as relaxing, and that increased relaxation may be one of the factors that improve creativity.

None of this is exactly news. The benefits of nature for the mind have been known for centuries. The philosopher and author Henry David Thoreau spoke eloquently (富于表现力地) about the two years he spent in the countryside. The experience certainly seemed to develop his creativity — he went on to write almost 50 books. Given this recent study, it looks as if his advice in Walden to “simplify, simplify, simplify” is good — if you want to relax your mind and make it become more creative, take a walk in the woods, and leave your cellphone behind.

1. What can we learn from the passage?
A.High-tech toys are useless for creativity.
B.There is much news about nature’s effect on human mind.
C.Participants were asked not to take their cellphones during the hike.
D.Strayer’s study is the first to deal with nature’s effect on creativity.
2. Which of the following can encourage creativity according to the study led by Strayer?
A.The colour green.
B.Feeling relaxed in nature.
C.The silence in the natural environment.
D.Learning more knowledge about nature.
3. Henry David Thoreau suggested that people ________.
A.live a simple life
B.throw away their high-tech toys
C.take a walk in the woods every day
D.live in the countryside rather than the city

4 . 请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Video conferencing is often thought to be a tool specially used for business meetings but the technology is used in many other ways. In fact, business meetings may actually be in the minority (少数) if you expand your definition (定义) of the term. There are other areas in which video conferencing has proven to be an extremely useful tool.

For obvious reasons, the telephone systems have connected the majority of the population for the better part of a century. However, it has never been available to those suffering from speech damage or hearing problems. The use of video as a means of telecommunication for the deaf and other people with communication problems is obvious. While the recent introduction of text services may seem easier to use, deaf people generally prefer to use sign language. Video conferencing makes it possible for these people to communicate with their full feelings. In addition, it has even been used to offer distant services with the help of a third party.

At the most basic level, video conferencing technology can be used by medical experts to discuss case experiences with colleagues across large distances. Beyond this it is also used to offer medical advice in real time for both routine (常规的) and emergency medical situations. For example, it allows a surgeon (外科医生) to advise on an operation being carried out several miles away. However, the most impressive application includes the equipment that can record data about a patient.

Video conferencing can also help cut costs in long distance education and provide services to people in far-away areas. There are lots of possible uses that universities and education bodies have for this technology; a few examples include:

lectures delivered by academics at far-away institutions or by staff who are away from their home campus;
researchers at different institutions can keep in touch without losing time travelling.

Finally, there’s politics. Considering that meetings between high-ranking officials tend to be confidential (保密的), it may not be used that much. However, it is one of the most common and effective uses of the technology, saving millions in public funds. Heads of state and senior politicians can have a discussion on emergency situations in time without needing to travel and without running the risk of travelling to unstable (不稳定的) places. Considering that few international discussions involve just one or two parties, this application has probably had the biggest effect in the political sphere (范围) — even if no one realizes it.

5 . Leading experts on the Internet, technology and policy have shared the same opinion on what we can expect in the next decade when it comes to connectivity and its effects on society.

The Pew Research Center report asked thousands of experts and members of the public for opinions on “the most significant overall influences of our uses of the Internet on humanity” — and some had a rosier outlook than others.

“The smartest person in the world nowadays could well be stuck behind a plough in India or China,” said Hal, Google's chief economist.“Enabling that person — and the millions like him or her — will have a strong effect on the development of the human race.”

Early Internet pioneer David Hughes agreed: “When every person on this planet can communicate twoway with every other person on this planet, the power of nation states to control every human inside its geographic boundaries may start to disappear.”

Wearables (electronic equipment that people can wear) could monitor more than just steps, predicted UC Berkeley's Aron Roberts — or do more than just monitor: “We may literally be able to adjust both medications and lifestyle changes on a daybyday basis or even an hourbyhour basis.”

Microsoft Research's Jonathan Grudin is more pessimistic (悲观的): “By making so much activity visible, it exposes the gap between the way people behave and the way we think they ought to behave.Adjusting to this will be an unending, difficult task.”

And the difference between the rich and the poor will have a new aspect: “Only the welloff (and welleducated) will know how to preserve their privacy,” warned one expert.“Will the Internet make it possible for our entire civilization to fall down together, in one big awful step? Possibly,” admitted Harvard's Doctor Searles.“But the Internet has already made it possible for us to use one of our unique   advantages — the ability to share knowledge — to a degree higher than ever before.”

7 . Some researchers believe that the mobile phone makes youngsters less thoughtful and makes it easier for them to make mistakes in life. Hitting a few keys and then seeing the desired word appear in full trains children to be fast but inaccurate when they do other things, according to scientists. They warn that this could have a negative impact on a whole generation.

ChildWise, a market research firm specializing in children's products, found that one in four undereights had a mobile. The total of 4.5 million youngsters with mobiles included 58 percent of 9 to 10yearolds, 89 percent of 11 to 12yearolds, 93 percent of 13 to 14yearolds and 95 percent of 15 to 16yearolds.

Experts are also concerned about the possible impact of mobile phone radiation on developing brains. But Michael Abramson, a professor at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, says the amount of radiation transmitted during text messaging is a mere 0.03 percent of that transmitted during voice calls — suggesting radiation is not to blame for the brain effects.

In a recent study, Prof Abramson analyzed the mobile phone use of children aged between 11 and 14 and their ability to carry out a number of computer tests. He found that increased mobile phone use appears to change the way their brains work. He said, “The kids who used their phones a lot were faster on some of the tests, but were less accurate. We suppose that using mobile phones a lot, particularly tools like predictive texts for SMS, is training them to be fast but inaccurate. The use of mobile phones is changing the way children learn and pushing them to become more impulsive in the way they behave without thinking things through.”

The findings follow other research that suggested that text messaging encourages children's language skills and does not damage the ability to spell.

1. It can be concluded from the ChildWise's research that ________.
A.the older the child is, the greater chance he has a mobile phone
B.children under eight are too young to use mobile phones
C.children aged between 11-14 were not involved in the research
D.4.5 million people have a mobile phone in Australia
2. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Prof Abramson thinks mobile phones have little effect on children.
B.There's less radiation transmitted during text messaging than during voice calls.
C.Text messaging trains children to be fast and accurate.
D.Text messaging may damage children's ability to spell.
3. What does the underlined word “impulsive” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A.Encouraging someone to do something.
B.Forcing someone to accept a way of life.
C.Doing things without considering the effects they may have.
D.Doing things with careful planning and consideration.

8 . In no other time in history information, good and bad, has been spread as fast as today. Media just pushes out violence and cruelty and of course it will affect the minds of people watching.   Internet has damaged the idea that love is something special and school social workers are busy teaching teenage boys how to behave in a relationship and girls to say no to things they do not want to do.

Quite a lot of studies have been made into the way children are affected by watching TV and other media such games with a high content of violence. In a young age children cannot differentiate themselves and their fantasies from the real world. By playing games that mixes reality with fantasy children learn about themselves and the world. In their games they also act out things they might be considering, their wishes and things they have been through. If a child is let to watch a lot of violence, not surprisingly, the child is very likely to play violent games. Acting out what they have been through is a normal way of trying out new concepts and form ideas about how to interact with other people. Also, up to certain age most children adore adults how ever good or bad they are. Children look upon these adults as role models and copy their behavior.

So what happens then if a child watches adults harm and kill each other in a movie or in a game? What adults do is usually OK to do, so what happens on the screen must be OK even if it looks strange and makes the child feel uneasy. Children become insecure and anxious.

1. Why are children easily affected by TV programs and games?
A.Because they easily ignore the directions from their teachers and parents
B.Because they can't tell reality from fantasy and like to act things out.
C.Because TV programs and games are more attractive than their lessons.
D.Because they cannot find their role models from the real world.
2. From the passage we can learn that ________.
A.most people are deeply pessimistic about their future
B.young children get in touch with much content of violence
C.educators fail to teach what is right and what is wrong
D.films on TV are too difficult for children to understand
3. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Impact of Media on Children
B.Violence and Cruelty in Games
C.Our Worrying Future
D.Take Control of Children

9 . Having a website is not enough today. In fact,   for a website to be indexed by Google, it may take about a month. Even after this, it's not likely that it will appear on such engine rankings when a search is made. This is because there are millions of web pages that can be accessed at any given moment. Thus, they need to advertise website is more important than having a website.

Online advertising methods are very different from traditional ones. One of the methods to advertise website companies is use of banner ads. Companies use flash ads or banner ads placed in strategic locations around the web. However, the most common way of advertising today is the use of linkbuilding. Usually, Google and Yahoo will index web pages based on their popularity. Therefore, advertising website campaigns should be targeted towards ensuring your website has relevant links that are both outbound and inbound. Inbound links link back to you while outbound links come from your website to other relevant sites.

10 . The problem with students using Google is not that the search leader is unable to offer useful educational content. It’s that finding that content using simple search terms is a difficult art to master. But some educational companies and organizations aim to make it easier to find useful educational content among the Web. They are forming a working group to come up with more detailed criteria(标准)that could eventually be added into the search lines for Google, Bing, and Yahoo !

The project was encouraged by a joint move by those major search engines to help users do more effective Websearches. The idea behind the new education corporation is to determine a common “framework” for narrowing search results for education content—by subject area, or source type, or content type, or any number of possible criteria. The goal is also to persuade publishers of educational content to use a matching set of tags(分类)to help the search engines sort out their content more easily.

Search engines are used by college students, but they were not designed for them. This has been a subject of much   handwringing (绝望) among professors, who worry that students are not finding the most reliable content on the Internet even if more and more content providers of good fame—textbook publishers, scholars, universities and many others—have been putting useful academic resources on the open Web.

Michael Johnson, a member who will be serving on a working group devoted to developing the framework over the next six months or so, said “The project is aimed at benefiting the   publishers   of   educational   content   as   much   as students. ”

1. What may annoy students using Google to help them?
A.They can’t search useful educational content at home.
B.Google doesn’t provide valuable educational content.
C.It’s hard to find educational content in simple and effective ways.
D.There are so many students searching the same using Google now.

A.demand the major search engines offer more content
B.train more students to surf safely on the Internet
C.ask students to use more kinds of search engines
D.link better standards to the major search engines
3. What may publishers of educational content help in the joint move?
A.They should produce less educational content with better quality.
B.They can set standard tags to match with searched contents.
C.They may develop better searching software.
D.They will provide more educational content.
4. From the third paragraph we can see ________.
A.not all content providers of good fame offer reliable content
B.textbook   publishers   shouldn’t   put   resources   on   the open Web
C.college professors don’t believe in content on the Internet
