文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了由于全球气候危机的加剧,塑料已成为一个主要因素,麦当劳正在尽最大努力转向“更可持续”的快乐餐玩具,以减少能源消耗和对环境的影响。

2 . McDonald’s sells about one billion Happy Meals every year in more than 100 countries, including a lot of little, plastic toys. As the climate crisis heats up, plastic has been targeted as a major factor. McDonald’s is trying its best to be part of the solution, announcing the roll of “more sustainable”. Happy Meal toys made from recycled or certified materials by 2025.

The process of adopting sustainable Happy Meal toys has been underway for the past few years and has been strong cooperation between the marketing and supply chain teams. The announcement, however, marks Happy Meals’ first sustainability makeover and their joining a number of other recent sustainability initiatives from McDonald’s.

McDonald’s claimed to be the first global restaurant company to invest in solar and wind energy to expand the amount of renewable energy available in the U.S. McDonald’s also recently completed its first net-zero energy restaurant, located in Florida, designed to create enough renewable energy on-site to cover 100% of its energy needs annually. The company is using the restaurant to test additional solutions to reducing energy and water use.

All these efforts have the potential to provide a model not just for the system of McDonald’s, but for the entire restaurant industry, given the chain’s scale. They’ re also likely to generate some closeness from younger consumers, who are demanding more social responsibility from major corporations.

The toy makeover won’t affect the price of Happy Meals, because the company has designed their cost to be neutral (适中的). This likely means the effort won’t affect sales much, if at all. Happy Meal sales are “stronger than ever”.

“We have listened to our customers and have heard not just from parents, but from kids themselves,” said Sam, one of the officials of McDonald’s. “They’ re worried about the planet. We want to grow and be relevant to our customers and are now making bigger changes because we know this is what they wanted us to do.”

1. What can be inferred about Happy Meal toys of McDonald’s?
A.Their production will be expanded in a few years.
B.Their sales have declined due to the climate crisis.
C.They’ ll be improved to be environmentally friendly.
D.They’ re made from newly developed plastic materials.
2. Why does the author mention the restaurants of McDonald’s in Florida?
A.To show its rapid expansion.
B.To stress its strong economic strength.
C.To prove the cost of green products is higher.
D.To tell its attempts at the use of renewable energy.
3. What may happen after the action of McDonald’s according to Paragraph 4?
A.The employees of McDonald’s will get a pay rise.
B.McDonald’s will earn both fame and fortune in the field.
C.The price of McDonald’s products tends to be reasonable.
D.McDonald’s restaurants will be environmentally themed.
4. What can be concluded from Sam’s words about McDonald’s?
A.It always puts customers first.
B.It cares about children’s health.
C.It boosts the family relationship.
D.It has a strong crisis awareness.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。美国的基础教育学校的能源消耗量越来越大,这导致学校的运营成本越来越高。学校正寻求使用太阳能来解决这个问题。

3 . Schools in US are huge consumers (消费者) of energy. According to ENERGY STAR, K-12 schools spend more than $ 6 billion every year on energy, far more than the amount spent on other resources, and at least 30 percent of this energy is used inefficiently or needlessly.

Realizing that, some schools are looking for measures to save energy in several ways, from low-cost adjustments, such as turning off lights in unused rooms, to large-scale projects, such as turning to green equipment.

As solar energy (太阳能) is becoming a more financial choice for powering buildings, more schools are making the move toward the renewable energy and using solar panels (电池板) on their rooftops. According to an online solar marketplace Energy Sage, schools have their strong points to use solar energy. They often have the kind of enough space, suitable locations that are perfect for setting up solar panels.

In September 2020, a nonprofit Generation 180 released its third edition of a study on solar use in US schools. The findings showed that more than 7,300, or 55 percent, of K-12 public and private schools used solar energy, the number has increased by 81 percent since 2014.

They also described how solar schools were saving millions in energy bills, and provided several cases to show the increased savings achieved by solar-powered school districts. For example, an Arkansas school used its every year’s energy savings of nearly $ 100,000 to increase its teachers’ salaries.

The Interstate Renewable Energy Council, which tracks the number of K-12 schools with solar equipment and helps schools go solar, says on its website that schools with solar setups have an opportunity to educate students about clean energy, and show them that they are doing something for students’ and the planet’s health and future.

Third-party ownership also makes funding for 79 percent of schools to use solar energy possible, meaning a majority of schools don’t have to spend large amounts of money but can get the rewards of solar energy.

1. How does the author lead in the topic of the text in the first paragraph?
A.By giving an example.B.By raising a problem.
C.By offering an evidence.D.By making a comparison.
2. What is the advantage of using solar energy for the schools in the US?
A.Enough space to fix solar equipment.
B.Fund support from solar marketplace.
C.Free access to using solar energy.
D.Being the largest consumers of the energy.
3. What effect does using solar energy have on the schools?
A.Increasing their operating expense.
B.Threatening their teachers’ income.
C.Raising the students’ environmental awareness.
D.Reducing their total amount of energy consuming.
4. Which word can best describe the schools’ using solar energy?
A.Supportive.B.Doubtful.C.Cautious.D.Worrying.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍 Beth创建自己公司Unspun,用3D扫描来给用户量身定制衣服,从而减少浪费来应对气候变化。

4 . A United Nations group of experts predicted that global warming would reach extreme levels by the early 2030s. The likely result: ever-worsening weather disasters and related events—hunger, extinction of some plant and wildlife species and the spread of infectious diseases.

There is still time to avoid these disasters, but the window for action is closing quickly. Yet the reality is, few countries are on track to meet their existing goals to address climate change. Luckily, there is one bright note in this otherwise black picture: individual innovators are stepping up to try to find solutions to fight climate crisis using technology in new and creative ways.

When Beth began working in the fashion industry, she was disappointed to find that many makers tended to largely guess what people would actually buy. As a result, companies overproduced clothes, creating needless waste and environmental pollution.

To reduce unsold products and material waste in the fashion industry, in 2015, Beth began her own company, Unspun, which seeks solutions by making on-demand custom clothing tailored to a buyer’s body using a 3D-body scan. “We will never make clothes before they have a home.” said Beth. Its self-developed 3D-weaving(编织) machine enables customisation using a body scanner.

Unspun launched its first 3D woven items using the innovative tech last year. Since then, the company has produced thousands of pairs of pants, hats, bags in a test run for a large European retailer(零售商).

Unspun doesn’t intend to keep its novel production technique to itself. The company is in the process of building microsites around the world to localize 3D weaving production. For example, the company has set up its office in Hong Kong with a focus on business development, marketing and customer services. “Our goal is to reduce the global human carbon footprint by 1 percent, and the only way to realistically get there is to become a platform, working with forward-thinking brands (品牌) to collectively cleanup the industry,” says Beth.

1. What does the underlined words “bright note” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Experts’ prediction.B.Individual contribution.
C.The window for action.D.A new technology.
2. The company “Unspun” was setup to________.
A.avoid blind productionB.promote the sales of clothing
C.produce 3D-weaving machinesD.take the lead in the fashion industry
3. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Hong Kong?
A.To test out3D-weaving machine.
B.To stress its commercial advantages.
C.To show an application of Beth’s idea.
D.To illustrate the significance of teamwork.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Beth: Rising to Fame Overnight
B.Unspun: Weaving Clothes With Zero Waste
C.Global Warming: Issuing a Warning to Earth
D.3D-weaving Machine: Hitting the Market Soon
