文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了现在流行的一种慢跑形式—Plogging的起源,发展以及现状。

1 . Walking or running outdoors, people usually see rubbish all over the ground. Well, some people are doing something about it.     1     “Plogging” began in Sweden. The name connects the Swedish word “plocka” which means to pick up, and the word “jogging” which means to run slowly.

A Swedish man named Erik Ahlström, started the movement in 2016. He moved to Stockholm from a small community(社区) in northern Sweden. Each day he would ride his bike to work. He became worried about the amount of rubbish and litter he saw each day on his way to work. So, he took matters into his own hands. He began picking up the rubbish.     2

Today, plogging is an official activity, which is becoming more and more popular. People of all ages are welcome to plog. Exercise while helping your community.     3     It can also build closer social connections in a community. When the street looks bad and it’s dirty, you’re going to feel bad about the community. You may even feel less safe because of that. So if we’re all doing our part and picking it up, it’s very easy to help beautify it, and help build those social connection.     4     You get to feel some social duty when you do this.

Along with cleaning up the environment, there may be another reason to choose plogging instead of just jogging. You may get a better workout. One fitness app, Lifesum, records one hour of plogging as burning 288 calories.     5

As can be seen, cities around the world now hold plogging events. The goal is to spread the idea that littering is not acceptable. People would think twice before dropping a garbage on the ground.

A.And that is how plogging was born!
B.In other words, plogging is equal parts of exercise and community service.
C.There are people all around the world doing this.
D.They are plogging!
E.You get to know your neighbors.

3 . Starbucks is promising to get rid of straws (吸管)by 2020 and it’s all for a very good reason. This move is an answer to our own partners about what we can do to reduce the need for straws. Not using a straw is the best thing we can do for the environment.

In place of plastic straws, Starbucks plans to offer recyclable lids(盖子)for all iced drinks and paper straws for coffee. The transition is already taking place in Starbucks’ hometown of Seattle, where a ban on plastic straws went into place on July 1. By carrying this out in all 28,000 of their stores by 2020, the company says every year they are removing more than one billion                    straws from going into the ocean.

Starbucks’ decision to gradually stop using single-use plastic straws is a shining example of the important role that companies can play in stopping the tide of ocean plastic. With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we cannot afford to let industry sit on the sidelines. Marine(海洋的)life has a 50% death rate when it swallows plastic—yet researchers believe there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by the year 2050 if this rate of litter continues. That means there can be an immediate positive impact if we change plastic straws for environmentally friendly choices.

The smart design on the cup for cold drinks comes from Starbucks' in-house team of designers and has been in development for two years. However, the announcement comes as outcry (强烈的抗议)increases over the dangers that plastic straws can cause to marine life. Other companies making the eco-friendly change also announced plans last month to test possible choices to plastic straws last month.

1. Why does Starbucks decide to get rid of plastic straws?
A.To reduce its cost.B.To meet the customers ' needs
C.To create a greener planet.D.To develop its business worldwide.
2. What does the word “transition” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Condition.B.Change.C.Reply.D.Disagreement.
3. The tone of the author in referring to marine life can be described as___ .
A.HumorousB.PositiveC.DoubtfulD.Worried
4. What's the text mainly about?
A.Starbucks is throwing away plastic straws for a worthy cause.
B.Environmentally friendly materials will replace plastic straws.
C.Scientists are making efforts to solve ocean plastic pollution.
D.A sales promotion of a new brand by Starbucks is being done.

4 . Many experts are calling the growing problem of global waste a worldwide health crisis in since pollution from trash is not only harming the world’s oceans, air and soil but also endangering people’s health as well as the livelihood of all living creatures.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Such a dilemma raises the question, is there a more responsible way of dealing with trash? Fortunately, there is.     1    One example of this is what’s often called the three Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle. Reducing the use of plastic containers as well as reusing and recycling bottles and cans decreases the amount of garbage being sent to landfills. As a result, less money is spent on waste management, and countries’ financial burdens are significantly relieved. Such positive effects on an economy are known as a circular economy.

Circular economy

Traditionally, manufacturers would make a product to be used and disposed of by consumers. This linear (直线型的) model of production offered no help in the fight against global waste.     2    .

Once a product’s value is exhausted, the materials are recycled and returned to manufacturers. The outcome is less waste. One large-scale example of this is happening on the island of Taiwan.

    3

In 1997, Taiwan established its signature 4-in-1 Recycling Program, consisting of communities, government cleaning teams, recycling companies and the Recycling Fund. Residents separate their recyclable waste. The local government collection teams collect it.    4    . Importers and manufacturers who are responsible for the recyclable products pay a fee into the Recycling Fund. The Recycling Fund is an essential aspect of the program used to subsidize (补贴) the recycling disposal system, support education and research and development as well as finance recycling efforts in the future.

Turning garbage into gold

By following a circular system, more products than ever are being manufactured using recycled materials. Environmentally-friendly decisions like these help to conserve natural resources, reduce pollution, save landfill space and even create new job opportunities.     5    .

A.Practices in Taiwan
B.4-in-1 Recycling Program
C.Recycling can truly turn garbage into gold
D.Living a zero-waste lifestyle is the way to go
E.Alternatively, a circular economy was introduced
F.The recyclable waste is recycled in many local factories
G.Recycling companies buy waste materials from them to make profits

7 . We human beings haven’t been good friends to animals. For thousands of years, we have been polluting the environment ,making it hard for animals to live on the planet. We have been killing animals for their fur, feathers or meat, or simply because they are dangerous. As a result, many kinds of animals have disappeared forever. Hundreds more are on the endangered list today.

Should we care about animals? Of course we should. If animals of a certain kind all disappear, they will never come back again. Animals are more than just resources of things we need. Every kind of animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying any kind of animal can lead to many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰),the corn and grain that the farmers stored were destroyed by rats and mice. Why?Because hawks eat rats and mice. With less and less hawks to keep down their numbers, rats and mice multiplied quickly. And if people kill too many birds, the fields will be bothered with insects. It is because birds eat insects. When there are less and less birds, more and more insects will eat the crops.

Luckily, we’ve realized that we shouldn’t kill animals any more. And people are working hard to save those animals that would disappear soon. The government also passed laws to protect the endangered animals. In fact, quite a few countries have passed such laws. These laws forbid the killing of any kind of animal on the endangered list. We should try our best to protect and save the endangered animals.
