文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,介绍了如何通过寻找环保旅游公司来进行环保旅行。

1 . Look, let’s be honest-there’s no such thing as a “green” vacation. You’ll leave a carbon footprint, no matter what.     1     Here are a few questions to ask:

Is it a B Corp?

B Corps are businesses that meet a strict set of standards by the nonprofit B Lab. They include requirements for governance, workers, customers, community and the environment.     2     You’ll see some fairly well-known brands, like Intrepid Travel. But you won’t find the names of any major airlines, car rental companies or hotel chains-at least, not yet.

Does the company have any other environmental certifications?

Third-party certifications from Green Key, LEED and WELL can be signs that a travel company means business about the environment. Transportation companies may also offer verified certifications from organizations like Terrapass or the Gold Standard Foundation.     3     However, it’s a good start.

    4

If the company claims to be green, don’t just take its word for it. Listen to what it says. If you see nothing but models on its Instagram channel or ads for online discounts on its site, perhaps it’s a shade of fake green. “A company’s social media strategy is generally a reflection of its current ethos and goals,” explained Julia Carter, founder of Craft Travel.

How deep is its commitment to the environment?

5     For example, the Travel Corporation publishes an annual impact report that maps its progress against 11 sustainability goals developed by the United Nations. Many cruise lines also publish detailed reports that allow you to check their commitment to the environment against several objective standards.

A.But your trip can be green-ish.
B.What’s the company saying to everyone?
C.How can we find a reliable company online?
D.Don’t trust anything the company says to the public.
E.These certifications aren’t a guarantee the company is green.
F.Look for reliable reports on sustainability from a travel company.
G.You can search the directory of these forward-looking companies online.

2 . Small-scale fisheries supply many people with food. Almost all of those in this trade rely on gillnets (刺网) to trap fish. But gillnets trap other things, for example, endangered animals such as turtles; dangerous ones, such as Humboldt squid; and ones that are both endangered and dangerous, such as several types of sharks. Everyone involved would be better off if this did not happen.

Building on studies done both by himself and by others, to try to avoid the accidental netting of turtles, Jesse Senko, a marine-conservation biologist at Arizona State University, has been investigating the idea of fitting LEDs to nets to avoid netting other unwanted by-catch (误捕的鱼) without discouraging target animals. And, as he reports in Current Biology, it seems to work.

Dr. Senko and his team set up an experiment in the Gulf of Ulloa, in Mexico, in which they cooperated with local fishermen to employ over 10,000 meters of nets that had had nets battery-powered waterproof green LEDs fixed onto them every ten meters. Half of these lights were lit. The other half were left unlit, as controls. Each lit net was paired with an unlit one, and the two were used alongside one another at major fishing locations. The fishers’ target fish were large groupers (石斑鱼). Dr. Senko was interested both in what else got caught and whether the lights decreased catches of the target species.

On the latter point, to his relief, they did not. On the former, the lit net s caught 95% fewer kilograms of shark-related species. In particular, several threatened species turned up less often in the lit than the unlit nets.

The advantage from the point of view of fishermen was that they needed to spend a lot less time clearing these dangerous by-catches from their nets. And, crucially, the LEDs concerned are cheap, hard-wearing, and easy to fix. There are also plans to make them solar powered, for easy recharging. Here, then, is an environmental-protection idea from which everyone wins.

1. What is the problem with gillnets?
A.They are costly to maintain.B.They trap unwanted by-catches.
C.They discourage target catches.D.They only trap dangerous species.
2. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The principle of the experiment.B.The results of the experiment.
C.The purpose of the experimentD.The process of the experiment.
3. What can be inferred from Dr. Senko’s experiment?
A.Fixing LEDs to gillnets is a win-win idea.
B.Fishermen benefit the most from the idea.
C.The Lit-net catches more threatened species.
D.The LED-net just catches less target species.
4. What was the author’s attitude to the LEDs’ idea?
A.Critical.B.Unclear.C.Hopeful.D.Doubtful.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,本文主要说明了处理马尾藻的一些建议和方法以及所面临的困难和挑战等。

3 . Sargassum is a kind of floating seaweed (海草) that has been growing in size every year. It looks pretty in the ocean. However, sargassum can almost completely block out sunlight. Important kinds of seagrass suffer when light is blocked by seaweed. As sargassum piles up on beaches, it makes it hard for mother sea turtles to lay eggs, and nearly impossible for baby turtles to return to the sea.

So much sargassum piles up on beaches, and it breaks down slowly, giving out a bad smell like rotten eggs. “Even when governments clear the seaweed from beaches, they face problems of getting rid of it. Heavy machines can put turtle nests in danger. Some people have thought about using sargassum as a fertilizer (肥料), but it contains harmful heavy metals. So far, removing these harmful metal s costs too much to make it worth doing,” said the scientist Steven Kelley.

Sargassum grows faster in warming oceans, so climate change is definitely part of the problem. But scientists believe the unusual growth of the seawood is also caused by huge quantities of fertilizers washed into the ocean from farmlands.

Scientists and students are working hard to figure out how to deal with sargassum. Some suggest using sargassum as a building material, or possibly a fuel. One unusual solution is to drop it deep in the sea by using robots. Sargassum takes in huge amounts of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) as it grows. Removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is one important part of fighting the climate crisis. Sargassum could deal with this carbon dioxide in the deep ocean. Scientists are still testing this idea to see if it will work.

For now, scientists say the quickest solution is to stop filling the ocean with fertilizers. It is wise for farmers to change the way they farm. Moreover, the seaweed’s growth can have serious effects on islands that depend heavily on tourism and fishing. Island communities play a role in cleaning up the seaweed and promoting responsible tourism. At the same time, officials have to work towards changing policies to solve the issues.

1. What can we know about sargassum according to the first paragraph?
A.It affects the ecosystem negatively.
B.It adds to the variety of life in the ocean.
C.It causes a shortage of food for sea animals.
D.It creates a good living environment for seagrass.
2. What does Steven Kelley mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Reusing metal s from sargassum is a wise choice.
B.Fertilizers can help sargarrum break down quickly.
C.Dealing with sargassum safely is challenging work.
D.Practical ways have been developed to remove sargassum.
3. How can the unusual solution mentioned in Paragraph 4 do good to the environment?
A.By spreading sargassum widely to increase sunlight.
B.By changing sargassum into a renewable energy source.
C.By employing sargassum as a cleaner for ocean pollution.
D.By making use of sargassum’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Public attempts to recycle seaside sargassum.
B.The change in sargassum’s living environment.
C.Challenges and approaches concerning sargassum.
D.The influence of sargassum’s growth on climate change.

4 . Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but has brought new peoplems. One of the biggest is pollution. Pollution come in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.

Men have been polluting the earth. Many years ago, the pollution was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, men moved to another place.

Air pollution is now the most serious. Air makes people sick. And lots of people now are trying to use something to clear the air. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us become angry more easily.

Many countries are making rules to fight air pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air.

Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is true that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.

Although most of the pollution is caused by us, we are the ones who can change the situation. The earth is our home. We must take care of it. And we must pay more attention to the information in pollution at the same time.

1. Why was the pollution in the past less serious?
A.Because life in the past was easier.B.Because there were not so many people.
C.Because men stayed in one place.D.Because people used less coal to make fire.
2. According to the passage, which kind of pollution is the most serious?
A.Air pollution.B.Noise poliution.C.Light pollution.D.Water pollution.
3. What do many countries do to fight air pollution?
A.Try to use something to clear the airB.Ask people to use public transport more.
C.Stop putting dirty smoke into the air.D.Encourage people to move to another place
4. Why is the pollution by SO²the most dangerous?
A.Because there are so many factories.
B.Because the global warming is becoming worse and worse.
C.Because carbon dioxide emissions are increasing.
D.Because there is heavy traffic.
5. What is probably the purpose of this passage?
A.To prove life is much easier today.B.To call on us to take care of our earth.
C.To show the danger of pollution.D.To introduce how to fight air pollution.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了100万个物种面临灭绝,人类应该对此负责。

5 . One million species face extinction, more than ever before in human history, according to a UN report released in May. And humans should be responsible.

The researchers based the assessment (评估) on some 15,000 sources considering the causes and results of environmental changes over the past 50 years.

The findings are clear and alarming. The researchers have found that about 25 percent of the world’s plants and animals are at risk of extinction. These include sea and land animals. Even the domesticated (驯养的) animals are at risk: Over 9 percent of the domesticated animal species used for food and agriculture might have been lost.

There are some big problems. This rapid decrease of the natural world endangers global food safety and quality of life. For example, about 4 billion people rely on natural medicines, produced by the disappearing species, for their health care.

The researchers identified five drivers responsible for the bad news. They think at the top of the list is the change of land and sea use. The change in ecosystems towards agriculture, aquaculture and other human developments has led to changes in the natural living space of species. It is followed by the direct overuse of creatures (harvesting crops, cutting down the trees, hunting and fishing) and climate change, including rising sea levels and increasing extreme-weather events, wildfires, floods and droughts. The final causes of species extinction are pollution, especially plastics, and the spread of non-native species that can kill native plants and animals. In fact, good ecosystems can promote the growth of species.

The researchers say it is time for humans to act. They think maybe a new global way to save food and refuse waste in our life can turn the tables. Whether that is possible is an open question.

1. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of the text.B.To introduce the schedule of the report.
C.To introduce humans’ sense of responsibility.D.To introduce the history of human development.
2. What does paragraph 3 mainly show?
A.The reliability of the findings.B.The species of animals worldwide.
C.The seriousness of species’ reduction.D.The risky experiences of the researchers.
3. Which word best describes the relationship between species and ecosystems?
A.Narrow.B.Interdependent.C.Competitive.D.Unrelated.
4. What does the underlined phrase “turn the tables” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Change the situations.B.Ask the open questions.
C.Pollute the environments.D.Turn the tables upside and down.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。世界顶级科学家的一项新研究表明,人类需要少吃肉类和奶制品,并改变我们的耕作方式,以拯救地球免受气候变化的影响。

6 . A new study by the world’s top scientists says that humans need to cat less meat and dairy and change the way we farm to save the planet from climate change. Climate change means the global changes in the Earth’s average temperature, mostly caused by humans.    1    .

Burning fossil fuels (化石燃料) (coal, oil and gas) to power our homes, cars and factories is a major cause of climate change, yet the report says that limiting the use of fossil fuels will not be enough on its own to stop the harm being done to the planet.    2    The two-year study was carried out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) —an organization that advises governments on climate change. It was prepared by 107 top scientists from 52 countries.

In the past 100 years, the planet’s population has increased from 1.9 billion to 7.7 billion.    3     Raising animals creates a number of problems. Firstly, it uses far more water and other resources than farming crops. Secondly, plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air.    4     Farmed animals also produce a lot of methane (沼气), another greenhouse gas that causes climate change.

5    especially in places where a lot of these foods are eaten, such as Europe, the UK and the US, it doesn’t completely rule out eating meat and dairy, but says we should try to cut down.

A.Although the new report says that people should eat less animal products
B.As a result, the amount of land needed to produce food has also increased
C.The report says that humans should also change to a more plant-based diet
D.Avoiding meat and dairy is the biggest way to reduce human impact on Earth
E.When land is cleared for farming animals, that carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere
F.The world needs to produce more food without expanding the food system’s carbon footprint.
G.A Rising global temperatures lead to more extreme weather events, such as floods and hurricanes

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲现在美国的航空公司希望用玉米为飞机提供动力。

7 . Vast lands of America are dominated by corn, nearly 100macres of it, stretching from Ohio to the Dakotas. What once was forest today produces the corn that feeds people, cattle and, when made into ethanol (乙醇), cars.

Now, the nation’s airlines want to power their planes with corn, too. United Airlines signed a deal with a Nebraska ethanol company to buy enough sustainable fuel, to power 50,000 flights a year. The government could decide on its tax incentives (税收激励) for the industry as soon as December. “Mark my words, the next 20 years, corn farmers are going to provide 95% of all the sustainable airline fuel,” President Biden said in July.

The airlines’ ambitious goal would likely require nearly doubling ethanol production, which airlines say, with great expectation, would decrease their greenhouse gas emissions. If they succeed, it could transform America’s Corn Belt, stimulating farmers and ethanol producers, but potentially further damaging one of the nation’s most important resources: groundwater.

Corn requires a lot of water to grow and it can take hundreds of gallons to produce a single gallon of ethanol. But as airlines take the idea of ethanol, the vital groundwater faces serious risks. “We’re on track to massively increase water usage without any real sense of how sensitive our groundwater is,” said Jeffrey Broberg, who is concerned about groundwater in Minnesota, a major corn state.

The Department of Energy said in a statement that “water use is a critical part of the conversation surrounding bio-energy sustainability”. It pointed to a 2022 department study that concluded that the United States could significantly reduce pressure on groundwater by shifting fuel production away from water-intensive crops like corn, instead growing more crops that don’t require irrigation (灌溉), like various types of straw, grasses and trees. Hopefully, a better approach will be soon studied and adopted.

1. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.Farmers will increase 95% of their ethanol production.
B.The sustainable fuel will not be popular in the future.
C.Corn will be an influential source in the fuel industry.
D.The government stops the new fuel for the groundwater.
2. What does the underlined word “stimulating” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Preventing.B.Motivating.C.Destroying.D.Impressing.
3. What is the potential risk of the increased use of ethanol in fuel?
A.The shortage of corn production.
B.The increase in global warming.
C.A rise in clean-energy tax credits.
D.Higher stress on the groundwater.
4. What did the 2022 study suggest according to the last paragraph?
A.Expand the corn planting area.
B.Use some alternative materials.
C.Cut down the daily water usage.
D.Turn to the government for help.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了热带雨林的减少会对环境造成的影响,呼吁人们要保护热带雨林,进而保护整个人类赖以生存的环境。

8 . A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below16℃. Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world.

In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources: land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit.

There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now, but in the long run it actually reduces the world’s wood supply.

Rainforests are often called the world’s drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world’s shrinking rainforests.

1. Why can rainforests help to adjust the climate?
A.They reflect more heat into the atmosphere.
B.They bring about high rainfall throughout the world.
C.They reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earth.
D.They rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16℃.
2. What can be inferred from the text?
A.There is great medicine potential in rainforests.
B.The level of annual rainfall affects wind patterns.
C.We can get enough resources without rainforests.
D.We will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained land.
3. What might be the best title for the text?
A.Rainforests and Medical DevelopmentB.Rainforests and the Environment
C.How to Save RainforestsD.How to Protect Nature

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,讲述了在曼彻斯特博物馆工作的约翰和罗伯特通过开发新的方法,以任何方式重复使用材料,为博物馆的发展提供了新的思路。

9 . Some exhibitions and new displays create lots of waste. So museums are increasingly aware of the role they have to play in dealing with that. At Manchester Museum, John Miller and Robert O’Conner have developed their own approach to creating a circle from the exhibition, to exhibition changeover, and back to the museum workshop, reusing materials in any way they can.

Holding different exhibitions and displays means that museums are often left with structures (结构体) that won’t be used again. At the end of an exhibition, John and Robert carefully take down and cut all materials into workable units, ready to be reused wherever needed. When Pinc College based at Manchester Museum needed new classrooms, the workshop team were able to use completely recycled materials to build them.

While it’s easy to think of new as being better, reusing materials doesn’t mean you can’t create beautiful displays. Last year, the museum placed Illuminating Nature, a surprising window display showing some objects under UV light. Almost every part of it was reused. The only thing that needed to be bought was the UV lights, proving you don’t need to spend much to create something impressive.

No matter how many materials you try to reuse there will always be something left over. Why not keep an eye out for charities or local groups who would welcome a donation? As with many museums, paint is often bought for an exhibition. And there will be a few extra cans left over. Manchester Museum usually takes them to Betel UK, a charity that supports people losing their jobs. The paint is used by Betel UK in their workshops for people to learn special skills and then refresh furniture (家具) which is then sold in their shops.

The impressive efforts of John and Robert are a shining example of a museum team that is establishing best practices and proving its determination to build a greener world. Their work inspires other teams to move away from the growth-model thinking that’s been influential in museums for the past twenty years.

1. What are John and Robert trying to do?
A.Put on exhibitions on waste problems.
B.Improve people’s interest in traditional art.
C.Turn exhibition waste into something useful.
D.Change people’s attitudes to museum exhibitions.
2. Why did the author mention Illuminating Nature in Paragraph 3?
A.To advertise the beautiful exhibition.
B.To teach people to use UV lights properly.
C.To show a successful case of material reuse.
D.To encourage people to enjoy the beauty of nature.
3. How does Manchester Museum often deal with the leftover paint?
A.By storing it away for future use.
B.By selling it to local people at a low price.
C.By using it to decorate the museum again.
D.By donating it to an organization in need of support.
4. What can we say about John and Robert’s practices?
A.Their effectiveness has been questioned by other museums.
B.They provide new ideas for the development of museums.
C.They inspire more artists to hold creative exhibitions.
D.Their limitations have been well removed.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。朴茨茅斯大学的一项新研究显示,大西洋东北部地区的航运量显著增加。科学家现在警告说,需要更多的监测,以帮助保护海洋生物。

10 . New research from the University of Portsmouth has shown a marked increase in shipping in the North East Atlantic. Scientists now warn that more monitoring is required to help protect sea life.

Researchers at the University of Ponsmouth have discovered that rates (率) of shipping in the North East Atlantic area rose by 34 per cent in a five-year period. The research is the first detailed survey of shipping activity in the North East Atlantic. Researchers used data from over 530 million vessel (船) positions recorded by Automatic Identification System(AIS). They looked at the change in shipping between 2013 and 2017 across ten different vessel types. In total the study area covered 1.1 million km², including waters off Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany,Iceland, Ireland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal. Spain, and the UK.

Lead author, James Robbins said: “This change is likely to put more pressure on the marine (海洋的) environment, and may influence the protection of at-risk species. Renewed monitoring effort is needed to make sure that protective measures are enough to save species under threat in a changing environment.”

Some of the greatest shipping increases were found in areas close to the Spanish coast. The Espacio Marino de la Costa da Morte saw a rise of 413 percent in vessel activity. It is an area used to protect seabirds.

Dr. Sarah Marley, Visiting Researcher at the University of Portsmouth, said: “Shipping is the most widespread human activity in our oceans, carrying a set of threats-from unnoticeable effects like underwater noise pollution to serious results when ships hit whales.”

Professor Alex Ford. from the University’s Institute of Marine Sciences, said: “Given the well-documented effects that shipping can have on the marine environment, it is necessary that this situation continues to be monitored-particularly in areas used to protect vulnerable (脆弱的) species which may already be under pressure.”

1. What can we say about the new research?
A.It started in 2013.B.It is the first of its kind.
C.It was carried out by AIS.D.It covers the whole Atlantic.
2. What do the underlined words “This change” in paragraph 3 refer to ?
A.Rapid population growth.
B.Rising global temperatures.
C.The huge increase in shipping.
D.The disappearance of marine life.
3. What does Dr. Sarah Marley want to tell us in paragraph 5?
A.Shipping plays an important role in the local economy.
B.Shipping can be a danger to the marine environment.
C.Noise pollution is closely related to human activity.
D.Marine areas should be monitored more carefully.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.New waterways across the Atlantic
B.The shipping industry in the North East Atlantic
C.New research opens windows into life under the water
D.Sea life needs better protection from an increase in shipping
