文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。拉斯维加斯是建立在沙漠中的城市,水非常珍贵。然而城市的草消耗了大量的水。为节约用水,该市要求立法机构通过一项法律:禁止使用没有用途的草。

1 . Las Vegas city in Nevada is built in a desert. The city may be known to the outside world for its partying. But officials have found that there are 21 square kilometers of useless grass. The grass is never laid on, played on or even stepped on. The grass is only there to look nice.

Now, the city is asking the Nevada state legislature (立法机构) to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets, in housing developments and in office parks.

It is estimated (估计) that useless grass makes up 40% of all the grass in Las Vegas and it needs a lot of water to survive. Grass needs four times more water than dry climate plants like cactus. By tearing out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%.

In 2003, the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered homeowners $30 for each square meter of grass they tear out. But fewer people are now using the program. Water usage has increased in southern Nevada by 9% since 2019. And last year, Las Vegas set a record of 240 days without major rainfall. The Colorado River provides much of Nevada’s drinking water. The river could lose more water as climate change affects it.

Water officials (官员) in other dry cities said water usage needs to be reduced. But they fear the reaction to reforms like the ones in Las Vegas if their communities do not accept them. Cynthia Campbell is the water resources adviser for the city of Phoenix in Arizona. “There might come a point whencity restrictions(限制) get too severe (苛刻的) for some residents (居民). They’ll say that is the point of no return for them,” Campbell said. “For some people, it’s a pool. For some people, it’s grass.”

1. Why does Las Vegas city try to ban useless grass?
A.To protect the local people.B.To beautify the city.
C.To reduce water usage.D.To reduce waste.
2. What program was carried out in Las Vegas in 2003?
A.Allowing planting grass before new houses.
B.Encouraging the residents to tear out grass.
C.Praising those who don’t sign on the program.
D.Awarding those who reduced water usage.
3. What is implied (暗示) in Campbell’s words in the last paragraph?
A.Many residents won’t follow the ban.
B.Reaction to the reform will vary personally.
C.Other measures should be taken to protect water.
D.Water officials should consider many factors (因素).
4. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.Las Vegas Plans to Ban Useless Grass
B.A Method Is Adopted to Save Las Vegas
C.Choices between Beauty and Practice
D.Grass Is Important but Useless in Las Vegas

文章大意:这是一篇议论文,文章通过提出铺路对水资源的影响、对水资源的管理以及在日常生活中如何节约用水,详细阐述人类活动对水资源有着很大的影响。

2 . Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less usable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.

Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(缺乏). Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs .

Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States, a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number.

You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks(滴水) in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.

1. Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?
A.Using river water.B.Throwing batteries away.
C.Throwing rubbish into lakes.D.Paving parking lots.
2. What can be inferred from the text?
A.All water shortages are due to human behavior.
B.It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.
C.There is much we can do to reduce family size.
D.The average family in America makes proper use of water.
3. The last paragraph is intended to _________.
A.show us how to fix leaks at home
B.tell us how to run a dishwasher
C.prove what drinking glass is best for us
D.suggest what we do to save water at home
4. The text is mainly about _________.
A.how human activity affects our water supply
B.how much we depend on water to live
C.why droughts occur more in dry climates
D.why paving roads reduces our water

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文阐述了在世界大部分地区,许多学生帮助学校减少污染,加入了环境俱乐部的学生通过“无垃圾午餐”、“无车日”和“关掉水”等方式减少污染。

3 . In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join an “environment club”. In an environment club, people work together to make our environment clean. Here are some things students often do.

No–garbage(垃圾)lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the least garbage and report them to the whole school.

No–car day. On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car---not the students and not the teachers. Cars give pollution to our air, so remember: walk, jump, run, or bike! Use your legs! It’s lots of fun!

Turn off the water! Did you know that toilets(厕所) can waste twenty to forty tons(吨)of water an hour? In a year, that would fill a small river! In the environment clubs, students fix(修理)those broken toilets.

4 . The Earth is facing a climate crisis, but it’s also getting greener. According to a new research, the rise is largely because of China and India. A study by NASA, based on extensive satellite imagery, has revealed that the two countries with the world’s biggest populations are also responsible for the largest increase in green plants.

A third of the leaf increase is attributable to China and India, due to the implementation of major tree planting projects as well as a vast increase in agriculture. “China and India account for one-third of the greening, but contain only 9% of the planet’s land area covered in vegetation—a surprising finding, considering the large populations in the countries need much land, ” Chi Chen, the study’s lead author said in a statement.

Between 2000 and 2017, a NASA sensor gathered data of the Earth’s surface from aboard two satellites, the Terra and the Aqua. Using the data, researchers discovered that China is the source of a quarter of the increase in green leaf area, despite possessing only 6. 6% of the world’s vegetated area. Forests account for 42% of that increase, while croplands make up a further 32%. China’s increase in forest area is the result of forest conservation and expansion programs, established to combat the impacts of climate change and air pollution.

Rama Nemani, a researcher at NASA’s Ames Research Center, said in a statement, “When the greening of the Earth was first observed, we thought it was due to a warmer, wetter climate from the added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to more leaf growth in northern forests, for instance. Now, with the data, we see that humans are also contributing, ” Nemani said. “This will help scientists make better predictions about the behavior of different Earth systems, which will help countries make better decisions about how and when to take action. ”

1. What can we get from the new research by NASA?
A.China and India make a contribution to the Earth’s increasing greening.
B.China and India should be responsible for the world’s climate crisis.
C.China and India have the biggest populations and the most green plants.
D.The Earth no longer faces a climate crisis because of China and India’ efforts.
2. Which of the following is NOT the fact from the passage?
A.China and India contribute one-third of the world’s greening growth.
B.China and India account for only 9% of the planet’s land area with vegetation.
C.A quarter of the increase in the world’s vegetated area is due to China’s efforts.
D.China’s forests and croplands make up 74% of the Earth’s increase in green leaf area.
3. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the last paragraph?
A.The protection of the forests.B.The increased croplands.
C.The greening of the Earth.D.The impacts of climate.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.China and India are making the Earth greener.
B.The Earth we live on is facing a climate crisis.
C.China and India are joining together to deal with climate change.
D.NASA released a report on air pollution in China and India.

6 . Nature is all about relationships: the interconnected links between the living and lifeless, and how they harmonize beautifully into a whole that might not be immediately apparent to us humans, as the complexities of the world sometimes escape the grasp of our relatively short-sighted understanding. Perhaps that's why the urgency of the climate crisis and other environ-mental issues don't truly hit home for some; because that important data is presented in a dry, factual way that doesn't touch the deeper parts of our collective soul, in a way that would move us to realize what is being lost.

Clare Celeste is an environmentally-minded artist creating artworks that aim to highlight the precious biodiversity of the planet. Using paper that is complexly cut and then hand-assembled piece by piece, Celeste forms imaginary landscapes of plants and animals that are folded or pressed between glass.

Growing up in Brazil, Celeste says that her earliest childhood memories were of green, tropical ecosystems slowly being eaten up by the rapid expansion of nearby cities.

Celeste said, “When I made a series of combinations, I realized that many of the species in the illustrations had already gone extinct. Humans have wiped out 68 percent of all our planet's biodiversity since 1970, so working with old illustrations can be very heartbreaking as much of the diversity in these beautiful old illustrations has been wiped out by human activities.”

Celeste explains some of the motivations behind this series of paper works: “I wanted to convey the beauty of our planet's plants and animals, while also introducing a more architectural or human-made element with the geometric (几何图形的) patterns. Having grown up in Brazil, I was surrounded by dense urban spaces that often had rich jungle growth just wanting to break through the concrete architecture. I suggest we go back to our love: our love of nature, of our children, of future generations. Because when we love something deeply, we are required to act—to save it when it is threatened.”

1. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A.People are connected with each other.
B.People find data on nature boring to study.
C.People can't solve the climate crisis on their own.
D.People don't fully understand environmental issues.
2. What did Celeste remember about her childhood?
A.Cities were rich in green plants.
B.Buildings were decorated with plants.
C.Urbanization destroyed the local biodiversity.
D.Nature was a mixture of natural artworks.
3. What can be inferred from Celeste's words in paragraph 4?
A.Most species die without adapting to environment.
B.Humans feel painful at the loss of species.
C.Her paper cuts represent the extinction of species.
D.Human activities have severely damaged biodiversity.
4. What motivates Celeste to create her works?
A.The desire to protect the biodiversity.
B.The desire for a good childhood memory.
C.The idea of imagining landscapes.
D.The hope of preserving natural beauty.

7 . The earth is dying before us, yet we sit and watch. If the TV or the game system breaks, we run off to the stores to get it fixed immediately no matter what the cost. Why aren’t we willing to fix our earth? Are our televisions and game systems more important to us than where we live? Where shall we continue to live, until the end of time?

The earth is our home and cannot be replaced. We must take care of it. We have come up with so much technology that limits us instead of helping us. Take that game system we run to repair. What does it do? It occupies kids’ time! The earth has already given kids plenty of entertainment in the forms of fields and hills, forests and plains, water and land. However, instead of using what the earth has given us, and helping kids by giving them exercise as they run around, we decide to ruin kids’ minds with game systems that glue them to the screen for hours, and make them ignore their homework and chores. We have polluted this earth by making these things which do not even help in any way!

We have already messed up this world, we have ruined the air, water, and animals that it has so willingly provided for us. We need to stop this destruction of life and bring back the world we had before. It will not be easy, but everybody can help! What about something as simple as turning the lights off when you leave a room? Recycling what can be recycled? Picking up litter? Donating money to an environmental organization? None of these things are very hard. We can’t just always say, “Oh, the earth is a mess. Ah, well, those big companies that are polluting so much can stop and fix it.” Instead, we need to help out. It’s not only those big companies; it’s everyday things that we do too that are ruining the earth. So, stop and think about what you can do to make a difference to our world!

1. Why does the author mention televisions and game systems in Paragraph 1?
A.To make people better aware of the urgency to the protection of the earth.
B.To explore the great harm done to the earth by too much technology waste.
C.To show the relationship between overuse of those things with early death.
D.To remind people to spend less on them and use the saved money in a wiser way.
2. It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that the author________
A.thinks we must take care of our irreplaceable home—the earth.
B.thinks running around in fields occupies too much of kids’ time.
C.takes an extremely negative attitude to things like game systems.
D.takes it for granted that technology gives kids plenty of entertainment.
3. What does the underlined word “glue” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.returnB.attract
C.attachD.stick
4. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To criticize those big companies that ruin the earth.
B.To ask people to save kids from the harm done by pollution.
C.To give kids plenty of entertainment in a clean environment.
D.To call on people to stop ruining the earth.

8 . Can everything be recycled? No, not all things can be recycled. But you might be surprised to learn how many things can be recycled. You may already know about plastic bottles. Did you know you can also recycle glass?

Glass can be recycled to make all sorts of things. Recycling glass really helps the planet. Making new products from recycled glass causes less air and water pollution. It also uses less energy than making new glass.

When glass arrives at a recycling plant, people and machines sort it by color. Similar colors of glass must be recycled together. That way, recycled products are as pure as possible. This makes them stronger and less likely to break. Once the glass is sorted, it's washed. That's when the breaking begins. That's right! To be recycled, glass has to be broken to make a material called cullet(碎玻璃).

Glass manufacturers love cullet. It's cheaper than the raw materials they'd need to make new glass. It also melts at a lower temperature. That means they save energy during the production process. Glass manufacturers mix cullet with other materials like sand and soda ash. Then they heat it to over 2,600℉. This makes liquid glass, which can then be poured into a mold (模具). There, it cools and forms a finished glass product.

Most recycled glass is used to make new glass containers, such as jars and bottles. However, recycled glass can also find its way into all sorts of other products including a variety of construction products.

Do you recycle at home or school? What glass products should you be sure to recycle when you’ re done with them? With everyone doing their part, recycling glass can make a huge difference to the planet!

1. What is the first step in recycling glass?
A.Sorting it according to color.B.Cleaning it with water.
C.Removing the color in it.D.Breaking it into cullet.
2. Why do glass manufacturers love cullet?
A.It is easy to get.B.It helps cut costs.
C.It can be easily broken.D.It can be mixed with other materials.
3. Why does the author ask the questions in the last paragraph?
A.To call attention to home or school environment.
B.To help readers classify glass products at home.
C.To encourage glass recycling among readers.
D.To encourage readers to use fewer glass products.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Recyclable things that you might have ignored.
B.The difficulty in glass recycling.
C.How to recycle at home or school.
D.How glass is recycled.

9 . A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women's shoes. Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.

A San Francisco-based company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company's co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women's feet. They take plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then bonded together. This is done by a 3-D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while people are making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe's outer part called the sole(鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.

Rothy's shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We're not going to run out of water bottles any time soon, so we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.

For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shops in the near future.

1. How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?

B.The reasonable price.
C.The power of famous people.
D.The company's advertisement.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To advertise a new kind of shoes.
B.To describe the process of making shoes.
