1 . The French Danone company is the latest to replace some plastic water bottles with aluminum (铝) cans. Competitors like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestle have also started selling water in aluminum cans.

Replacing plastic water bottles that pollute the seas with recyclable aluminum cans should be an easy way to help the environment, right?

Maybe not.

Aluminum cans might result in less ocean waste, and the metal containers also are lighter than glass or plastic bottles, but they also come with their own cost to the environment. The production of an aluminum can is estimated to release two times as much carbon dioxide into the air as a plastic bottle.

“That’s the dilemma you’re going to have to choose between,” said Ruben Griffioen, an official at beermaker Heineken. He said his company was Lrying to reduce the use of plastic bottles.

Bruce Karas of Coca - Cola North America agreed. He said, “There’s a mix. There are some things that are not that desirable, but if you have five good things and one that isn’t, we’ll all have to make decisions.” He added, “It’ll never be that clean.”

Bottled water is a 19 billion industry. Although its use of cans is increasing, experts say cans are unlikely to completely replace plastic bottles.

Aluminum is costlier than plastic so canned drinks mean higher prices for buyers. Another major consideration is user convenience-cans stay open while bottles can be reclosed. More importantly, there is one barrier to ending the use of plastic water bottles: There may not be enough cans to go around. Beer and wine makers are now also increasingly using aluminum.

1. What’s the advantage of aluminum cans?
A.They are pollution-free.B.They are lighter.
C.They are cost-effective.D.They are low-carbon.
2. What is Karas’s attitude to replacing plastic bottles with aluminum cans?
A.Supportive.B.Disapproving.C.NeutralD.Indifferent.
3. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.The wide application of aluminum cans.B.The promising future aluminum cans
C.The major advantages of aluminum cans.D.The unavoidable limitations of aluminum cans.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Aluminum Cans or Plastic Bottles?B.A Blessing or a Misfortune?
C.How to Deal with Plastic Bottles?D.Why Do We Choose Aluminum Cans?

2 . It’s hard to be a bird in a world which is in the charge of mankind.

You can hardly hear yourself sing, let alone hear the songs of your friends… and worst of all, you can’t hear a predator(捕食者). Noise is almost everywhere, especially noise from traffic.

Researchers have tried to study the influence of road noise on animals by looking at animals living near noisy roads.

“We figured out a way to have just the noise without any of the other effects of the road, and to do that we put many speakers in a forest where there was no road,” said Chris McClure, a biologist at Boise State University and The Peregrine Fund. He and his team carried out their experiment at a place popular with birds in Idaho as they fly south for the winter.

While the noise kept lots of birds away, some remained. But they had trouble putting on enough weight to support them in the next part of their migratory journey.

“They have to take food but they also have to avoid getting eaten by a predator. But these two things can’t be done at the same time because to eat, they have to look down, which means they aren’t looking at predators.”

And when it’s too loud, they can’t hear the alarm calls of other birds. So they have to waste time looking for predators instead of searching for food.

By 2050, it’s thought that enough new roads will be built to circle the planet more than 600 times. But there’s an easy solution to the noise problem—“Lowering speed limits does a lot.”

So next time you’re driving through nature, just slow down a little. It’s safer for you and the wildlife. And you can enjoy the view a little longer.

1. Who does the word “you” in Para 2 refer to?
A.A driver.B.A predator.C.A researcher.D.A bird.
2. Why did the researchers do the experiment in a forest without roads?
A.To prevent birds from being hit by cars.
B.To separate noise from other effects of the road.
C.To test a larger number of birds.
D.To put as many speakers as possible.
3. Why can’t birds put on enough weight with much noise around?
A.They can’t concentrate on looking for food.
B.They have to fly south for the winter.
C.They can’t hear the alarm calls.
D.They feel afraid of the noise.
4. What is advised to do to protect birds from the noise problem?
A.To build enough new roads.
B.To carry out more experiments.
C.To enjoy the view a little longer.
D.To drive slowly through nature.

4 . Main Types of Water Pollution

When we think of Earth’s water resources, we think of huge oceans, lakes, and rivers.     1     The most obvious type of water pollution affects surface water. For example, a spill from an oil tanker creates an oil layer that can affect a vast area of an ocean.

2     A great deal of water is held in underground rock structures known as aquifers(含水层). Water stored underground in aquifers is known as groundwater. Aquifers feed our rivers and supply much of our drinking water. They can also become polluted, for example, when weedkillers used in people’s gardens drain into the ground.

Surface water and groundwater are the two types of water resources that pollution affects.     3     If pollution comes from a single location, such as a pipe attached to a factory, it is known as point source pollution.     4     A great deal of water pollution happens not from one single source but from many different sources. This is called nonpoint source pollution.

Sometimes pollution that enters the environment in one place has an effect hundreds or even thousands of miles away.     5     One example is the way radioactive waste travels through the oceans from unclear reprocessing plants in England and France to nearby countries such as Ireland and Norway.

A.Besides, we think of bottled water.
B.This is known as transboundary (跨界的) pollution.
C.Not all of Earth’s water sits on its surface, however.
D.Water resources like these are called surface water.
E.There are also two different ways in which pollution can occur.
F.Pouring oil from your car down a drain can lead to water pollution.
G.Another example of point source pollution is an oil spill from a tanker.

5 . Food production does great harm to our environment. There are many procedures involved in the manufacture of food that result in greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Some procedures require the consumption of large amounts of fossil fuels, such as the transportation and storage of food products. Other factors that cause great damage to our environment include the overuse of fresh water.

The production of beef is more damaging to the environment than that of any other food we consume. Raising large numbers of cattle requires the production of large amounts of food for the animals. it's estimated that producing one pound of beef requires seven pounds of feed.

Land use is also a problem. If the cattle are free-range cattle, large areas of land are required for them to live on. This has led to disastrous forest cutting and the loss of rare plants and animal species, particularly in tropical rain forests in Central and South America.

Another problem specific to beef production is methane emissions (甲烷排放). Although many people are aware of the damaging effects of carbon dioxide, they don't realize methane's global warming potential is 25 times worse, making it a more dire problem.

Unfortunately, beef consumption is growing rapidly. This is the result of simple supply and demand factors. Specifically, there are two main causes of demand that are encouraging the production of more supply. First, the increase in the world population means there are more people to consume meat. The second factor is socioeconomic advancement. As citizens in developing nations become financially stable, they can afford to buy more meat.

Therefore, one way to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions is for people around the world to significantly cut down on the amount of beef they eat.

1. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Raising free-range cattle is eco-friendly.
B.People cut down trees for animal habitats.
C.Producing beef can damage the environment.
D.Carbon dioxide causes far more harm than methane.
2. The underlined word "dire" in Para. 4 means _______.
A.common
B.urgent
C.beneficial
D.avoidable
3. Beef production is growing rapidly because_______.
A.more people are in demand of beef
B.developing countries raise more cattle
C.more land is available to raise cattle
D.the cost of raising cattle is relatively low
4. The author writes this article to_______.
A.describe the booming of the beef production
B.emphasize the advantages of beef production
C.criticize the cutting of the rain forest
D.argue for a decrease in beef consumption

7 . CORAL reefs are,in fact,a necessary part of our ecosystem and provide opportunities for human beings to gain a better understanding of the ocean.Unfortunately, they're also disappearing faster than ever.

According to a warning by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) on Oct.8,the world is in its third recorded global coral bleaching(白化)since 1998 and 2010.This means no place with coral has been spared,as coral reefs are coming into contact with increasingly warm seas, which is leading to them dying off in large numbers.

Coral bleaching is like human cancer. It happens when corals are under stress from changes in light, nutrients,or temperature. This causes the coral to drive away the symbiotic algae(共生藻类),living within their tissues(组织), which play an important role in providing food for coral while making it colorful.Without the algae, coral reefs become pale and weak.In some cases they are not able to recover and eventually die off.

The current coral bleaching event started back in late 2014 and continued into this year with no signs of stopping. The BBC reports that 35% of coral reefs in the world will likely be affected, and an estimated 4,633 square miles (about 120,000 square kilometers) of coral reefs could die.

The loss of coral reefs is no small matter.Although they only take up 0.1% of the ocean floor, coral is home to about 25% of marine life. This isn't just a problem for divers and fish,as Eakin pointed out.Coral reefs are important globally,he added,as they protect shorelines, produce money in tourism, and help provide food for 500 million people worldwide. So people cannot overlook the environmental, economic and social effects of the loss.

The NOAA warning about coral bleaching came just about two months before a global climate summit(峰会)in Paris, where hundreds of world leaders will attempt to work our a plan to fight climate change.

Oceans will be a key subject during the summit, and Eakin says there's an "absolutely urgent need" for action.
