1 . The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.

Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.

Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.

Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by S02 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.

The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must care about the rise in pollution at the same time.

1. Why is our world becoming much smaller?
A.Thanks to the development of science.
B.Because of the rise in pollution.
C.Because the earth is being polluted day and night.
D.Because the earth is blown away by the wind every year.
2. What does the underline word “it” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Rubbish.B.Water pollution.
C.Air pollution.D.Noise pollution.
3. Why is air pollution called the most serious kind of pollution?
A.Because it’s bad for all living things in the world.
B.Because it makes much noise.
C.Because it has made our rivers and lakes dirty.
D.Because it makes us become angry more easily.
4. Which of the following is NOT true?
A.Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.
B.The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth.
C.The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world population does.
D.If people could go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike, it would be helpful in fighting against the problem of S02.

The environment pollution is more and more seriously today. We have no clean water to drink it because of water pollution. And when trees cut down, some animals disappear. There was more and more dirty smoke in the air. People’s health has been greatly affecting by air, noise and water pollution. Many people have died of disease caused by pollution. In order to live the better life, it’s time for us to protect our world.

Firstly, we shouldn’t throw away rubbish everywhere. And we should recycle, reduce and reuse things, what saves money and reduces pollution. Use things so long as possible. Don’t use plastic bags. Besides, we must plant more trees and stop people cut them down. We hope our world will be more and more beautiful.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了在人们当今的生活中污染是最严重的问题,以及为了减少污染,我们该如何做。

3 . Hundreds of years ago, life was harder than it is today. People didn't have modern machines.

Life today has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. Water pollution has made our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and become angry more easily. Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution to all living things in the world.

Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. Sometimes the polluted air is so thick that it is like a quilt over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog.

Many countries are making rules to fight against pollution. Factories must now clean their water before it is thrown away, and they mustn't let dirty smoke go into the air.

We need to do many other things. We can put waste things in the dustbin and do not throw them on the ground. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less pollution.

Rules are not enough. Every person must help to fight against pollution.

4 . The tradition of giving gifts didn’t start with the modern holidays we celebrate. Many ancient cultures celebrated holidays with the exchange of gifts. People who love to give gifts often can’t wait until it’s time for the recipients to open their gifts. If you’ve ever been given a gift, you know that part of the fun is the curiosity that builds as you wonder what the gift is.

The wish to hide the identity of a gift until just the right moment led people to wrap gifts long, long ago. Historians believed wrapping gifts in paper probably started not long after paper was invented thousands of years ago.

Wrapping paper like what we use today, though, is a much more recent invention. More than 100 years ago, gifts were usually wrapped in heavy brown paper. Before that, cloth was often used. The technology to mass-produce wrapping paper didn’t come along until the early 1900s. The first American gift wrap company— Hy-Sill Manufacturing Inc. — was founded by Eli Hyman and Morris Silverman in 1903. It wasn’t as easy to wrap presents back then as it is today, though, because adhesive tape (胶带) wasn’t invented until 1930.

Over the years, wrapping paper has developed into what we see in stores each holiday season. But scientists say that the United States alone produces an extra 5 million tons of waste over the holidays, most of which is from wrapping paper and shopping bags. To cut down on this waste, some people carefully unwrap presents, so that the wrapping paper can be reused. Others have started to use reusable gift bags instead of wrapping paper.

1. What is the interesting part of people giving a gift?
A.Hiding their gifts and their feelings.
B.Giving the recipients a surprise.
C.Letting the recipients open gifts at once.
D.Following a century-old tradition.
2. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.People didn’t know wrapping paper until 1903.
B.Heavy brown paper has been used to wrap gifts for 100 years.
C.Technology made wrapping paper widely available.
D.Adhesive tape was first created by gift wrap companies.
3. What do scientists worry about?
A.The future of reusable gift bags.
B.The waste produced by Americans.
C.Wrapping paper’s influence on the environment.
D.People’s admiration for wrapping paper.
4. What does the text mainly tell us?
A.The popularity of wrapping gifts.
B.The start of wrapping gifts in paper.
C.The problems caused by wrapping paper.
D.The story behind wrapping paper.

5 . 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Plastic pollution at sea is reaching     1     (worry) levels. According to a review of hundreds of academic studies, it will continue to grow even if significant action is taken now     2     (stop) such waste from reaching the world’s oceans. The review by Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute examined almost 2, 600 research     3     (paper) on the topic to provide an overview ahead of a United Nations meeting later this month.

As plastic breaks down into smaller pieces, it also enters the marine food chain,    4     (take) in by sea creatures from whales to turtles. What’s worse, some regions already contain dangerous levels of plastic, and others risk becoming     5     (increasing) polluted in the future. Getting that plastic out of the water again is nearly impossible,    6     policymakers should focus on preventing any more of it entering the oceans in     7     first place. Matthew MacLeod, a professor of environmental science at Stockholm University,    8     (involve) in a separate study not long ago,    9     also concluded effective measures are required immediately because of the possible global impacts.

While consumers can help reduce plastic pollution by changing their behavior, governments have to step up and accept     10     (responsible) for solving the problem. It’s a global problem and it needs global solutions.

6 . The measurable threat to the environment has been worsened by the spread of COVID-19 that increases the need for plastic protective equipment. Most plastic is made from fossil fuels. Millions of tons of greenhouse gas are released from the development of these resources and plastic production and burning.

The end life of plastic is just worrisome. Less than 10% of the plastic produced has been recycled. Even more of it has been burned. But the vast majority of plastic has been buried inland, and it is increasingly polluting the environment. We hear mostly about ocean plastic and the harm done to sea creatures that mistake plastic bags and bits for food. But microplastic is even more worrisome. Plastic doesn't break down biologically but instead breaks down into tiny particles(a very small piece of something), which have been found in every corner of the planet, on land and in the air, in drinking water and food sources.

Yet the public has not given this global environmental disaster the attention it requires. Instead, they have viewed single-use plastic—which makes up about 40% of plastic used each year—as a litter issue that can be solved through better recycling and waste management. That attitude must change because the recent global breakdown of the market for recycling has made it clear that it has never been, nor ever will be, able to keep up with plastic trash use.

California has been the forerunner of plastic waste reduction—it was the first state to ban single-use plastic bags and may be the first state to transform the way goods are packaged. The state also came close to passing an act which would have required that products sold in plastic packaging in the state have a proven recycling rate of 75% by 2032. California, though influential, can't solve this crisis alone. The US has long been producing a great amount of plastic trash and it should engage in reducing the use of plastic as well.

1. Why does the author mention the release of greenhouse gas in paragraph 1?
A.To show the harm of plastic
B.To warn of the climate change.
C.To call for the development of fossil fuels.
D.To highlight the importance of plastic equipment.
2. What's the author's attitude towards the public opinion on single-use plastic?
A.Favorable.B.Tolerant.
C.Curious.D.Opposed.
3. What's California's role in reducing plastic waste?
A.A pioneer.B.A failure.
C.An objector.D.A predictor.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Microplastic Products Are Harmful
B.Waste Recycling Is an Urgent Matter
C.Plastic Waste Pollution Is a Wake-up Call
D.Global Environmental Disasters Are Increasing

Thanks for your concern in your letter about the smog which frequent strikes some areas of China. I’m also very worrying about such a terrible weather. It has brought much inconvenience or rather harm to people's health such as road accident, bad coughs and even lung cancers and so on.

It is known to all, good environment comes from careful protection. But we should do what we can protect it. I believe a small step can make a different. Try to drive less and choose air-friendly products. Only when everyone had the environmental awareness can we have a blue sky. Hope to hear from you and share my good ideas.

8 . Baggy has become the first dog in the UK—and potentially the world—to join the fight against air pollution by recording pollutant levels near the ground.

Baggy wears a pollution monitor on her collar so she can take data measurements close to the ground. Her monitor has shown that air pollution levels are higher closer to ground level, which has helped highlight concerns that babies and young kids may be at higher risk of developing lung problems.

Conventional air pollution monitors are normally fixed on lampposts at about nine feet in the air. However, since Baggy stands at about the same height as a child in a pushchair(婴儿车), she frequently records pollution levels which are much higher than the data gathered by the Environment A gency.

The doggy data research was the idea of Baggy's 13-year-old owner Tom Hunt and his dad Matt. The English youngster noticed that pollution levels are around two-thirds higher close to the ground than they are in the air at the height where they are recorded by the agency. Tom has since reported the shocking findings to the government in an attempt to emphasise that babies are at higher risk of developing asthma(哮喘).

Matt Hunt said he was "very proud" of his son because “when the boy gets an idea, he keeps his head down and gets on with it, and he really does want to do some good and stop young kids from getting asthma."

“Tom built up a passion for environmental protection at a very early age," Matt added. “He became very interested in gadgets(小装置). About one year ago, he got this new piece of tech which is like a test tube. One Sunday afternoon, we went out to do some monitoring, and he said, why don't we put it on Baggy's collar and let her monitor the pollution?'So we did it."

Tom said, "Most of the time, Baggy is just like any other dog. But for the rest of the time she is a super dog, and we are all really proud of her."

1. With a monitor on her collar, Baggy can ____________.
A.take pollutant readingsB.record pollutant levels
C.process collected dataD.reduce air pollution
2. What can we learn from the Baggy data?
A.High places are free of air pollution.
B.Higher pushchairs are more risky for kids.
C.Conventional monitors are more reliable.
D.Air is more polluted closer to the ground.
3. What is Tom's purpose of doing the research?
A.To warn of a health risk.B.To find out pollution sources.
C.To test his new monitor.D.To prove Baggy's abilities.
4. According to the passage, which word can best describe Tom Hunt?
A.Modest.B.Generous.C.Creative.D.Outgoing.

9 . A ten-year-old sperm whale(抹香鲸)was found dead on a beach in Scotland.A necropsy(尸检)revealed that nearly 100 kilograms of plastic and other trash had formed clumps(硬块)in its digestive system. The tragedy quickly made headlines. Why would a top predator in the ocean eat gloves, rope, and plastic cups?

Conventional wisdom suggests that marine animals eat plastic because it is there and they don't know any better. It is true that plastic may smell like food to some of them. But that doesn't explain why only certain types of whales-deep-diving toothed whales, such as sperm whales and pilot whales-turn up dead on beaches with stomachs full of plastic.

It's possible, says Savoca, that plastic trash sounds like food to toothed whales. These species

hunt deep in the ocean, sometimes nearly 500 meters below the surface, where it's pitch black(漆黑)。They use echolocation(回声定位)to hunt for food, typically squid(乌贼)。

By contrast, baleen whales(须鲸),including humpbacks and blue whales, have natural filters(过滤器)for their food.Baleen, the brush-like filter-feeding system they have in place of teeth,as well as their narrow throats, keeping them from swallowing anything much larger than the krill(磷虾群)that forms the basis of their diet. That could help explain why baleen whales are not ending up with plastic filled stomachs.

Fifty years ago, there was almost no plastic in the ocean. The lifespan of a large whale can be

twice that long.In the lifetime of a single whale,we went from an ocean with no plastic to hundreds of thousands of tons of it.Plastic comes on top of other factors affecting life in the ocean-climate change, overfishing, shipping traffic, and noise pollution."it's a real shame because their lives are challenging enough even without the additional pressure we put onto them,"says Savoca.
1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.That plastic smells like food to toothed whales.
B.That marine animals started to eat plastic decades ago.
C.That a number of toothed whales are found dead on beaches every year.
D.That conventional wisdom about why marine animals eat plastic doesn't apply to all whales.
2. Which of the following statements DOESN'T explain why toothed whales are more easily harmed by plastic pollution than baleen whales?
A.They don't feed on krill.
B.They live in the dark depths of the ocean.
C.They are not born with brush-like filter-feeding systems.
D.They don't determine the location of their food with their eyes.
3. What does the author want to emphasize in the last paragraph?
A.Whales have a longer lifespan than humans.
B.Plastic has a negative effect on climate change.
C.Great changes have taken place in the ocean in the past 50 years.
D.Plastic pollution has worsened already serious issues affecting marine life.
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Different diets,different fates
B.Silent killers in the ocean
C.Plastic trash in-the ocean
D.Saving whales
