2 . Blue Planet II's latest episode(一集) focuses on how plastic is having a disastrous effect on the ocean and slowly poisoning our sea creatures. Researchers recently also found that sea creatures living in the deepest place on Earth, the Mariana Trench, have plastic in their stomachs. Indeed, the oceans are drowning in plastic.

Though it seems now that the world couldn't possibly function without plastics, plastics used by consumers are a remarkably recent invention. The first plastic bags were introduced in the 1950s; the same decade that plastic packaging began gaining in popularity in the United States. This growth has happened so fast that science is still catching up with the change. Plastics pollution research, for instance, is still a very early science.

We put all these plastics into the environment and we still don't really know what the outcomes are going to be. What we do know, though, is disturbing. Ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. One in three leatherback turtles, which often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, have been found with plastic in their bellies. Ninety percent of seabirds are now eating plastics on a regular basis. By 2050, that figure is expected to rise to 100 percent.

And it's not just wildlife that is threatened by the plastics in our seas. Humans are consuming plastics through the seafood we eat. I could understand why some people see ocean plastic as a disaster, worth mentioning to the same degree as climate change. But ocean plastic is not as complicated as climate change. There are no ocean trash deniers (否认者), at least so far. To do something about it, we don't have to remake our planet energy system.

This is not a problem where we don't know what the solution is. We know how to pick up garbage.Anyone can do it.We know how to dispose (处理) of it. We know how to recycle. We can all start by thinking twice before we use plastic products. Things may seem ordinary, like using a reusable bottle or a reusable bag. But when taken collectively, these choices really do make a difference.

1. Why is plastics pollution research still a very early science?
A.The plastics pollution research is too difficult.
B.Plastics have produced less pollution than coal.
C.The world couldn't possibly function without plastics.
D.Plastics have gained in popularity too fast for science to catch up.
2. How did the author support his opinion in Paragraph 3?
A.By statistics.
B.By quotations from leading experts.
C.By using examples from his own experience.
D.By comparison and contrast.
3. What can we infer about climate change ?
A.Climate change is caused by human activities.
B.Climate change is not as simple as ocean pollution.
C.Climate change is less important than ocean pollution.
D.Ocean plastic is more complicated than climate change.
4. What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Ocean pollution is a global issue.
B.The oceans become choked with plastic.
C.Blue Planet II has left viewers heartbroken.
D.Plastics gain in popularity all over the world

3 . A shark moving around the coastline is normally a worrying sight, but this waterborne drone(无人机)threatens floating rubbish instead of people.

Developed by Dutch company RanMarine, the WasteShark takes nature as its inspiration with its whale shark-like mouth. Responsible for collecting waste, the drone will begin operations in Dubai Marina in November after a year of trials with local partner Ecocoast.

According to RanMarine, the WasteShark is available in both autonomous and remote-controlled models. Measuring just over five feet by three-and-a-half feet(1.5 meters by 1.1 meter),it can carry up to 352 pounds of rubbish(159.6 kg)and has an operational battery life of 16 hours.

By 2016 there were approximately 150 million tons of plastic in the world's oceans. One paper from December 2014 estimated that over a quarter of a million tons of ocean plastic pollution was afloat.

"WasteShark also has the abilities to gather air and water quality data, remove chemicals out of the water such as oil,and heavy metals, and scan the seabed to read its depth and outlines,"said Oliver Cunningham, one of the co-founders of RanMarine. "Fitted with a collision-avoidance system, the drone uses laser imaging detection and ranging technology to detect an object in its path and stop or back up if the object approaches."

"Our drones are designed to move through a water system, whether it's around the perimeter(周边) or through the city itself. The drones are that last line of defense between the city and the open ocean," added Cunningham. "WasteSharks are operating in Dubai, South Africa and the Netherlands and cost $ 17,000 for the remote-controlled model and just under $ 23,000 for the autonomous model."

Dubai-based operator Ecocoast has two WasteShark drones. Co-founder Dana Liparts says they will clean waterfronts for clients including hotels and environmental authorities and that Ecocoast' intention is to have the collected rubbish recycled or upcycled. However, Liparts argues that cleaning waterways doesn't have a one-size-fits-all solution and requires a combination of new technology, preventative measures and changing people's attitudes towards littering.

1. What do we know about the WasteShark?
A.It can frighten sharks away.B.It is an ocean explorer.
C.It is a rubbish collector.D.It can catch fish instead of people.
2. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.The causes of ocean pollution.B.The dangers of using plastics.
C.The severity of ocean garbage pollution.D.The importance of ocean protection.
3. What will the WasteShark do with an approaching object?
A.Avoid crashing into it.B.Break it into pieces.
C.Swallow it.D.Fly over it.
4. Which of the following ideas does Liparts agree with?
A.The WasteShark should be used more widely.
B.More measures should be taken to make water clean.
C.The production cost of WasteSharks should be reduced.
D.People should take a positive attitude to new technology.

These days, breaking traffic rules and littering were not uncommon, causing serious harms to life and the environment. That requires lots of effort to change this situation on the part of everyone. As for me, I should start from little things and it won’t be long since I acquire good habits. If I ride a bike, I’ll always keep to the right but never cross a road until the traffic light turns green. If I walk, I’ll never forget use the pedestrian crossing. Meanwhile, I will regard it as my duty to help keep our environment clean and health. Not only will I keep myself on littering and spitting, I will also help clean up the roadside litter whenever be possible. I hope my behavior will make the difference.

6 . The tons of plastic we’re dumping in the oceans is finding a new home—the stomachs of our beautiful marine animals. Yet another reminder of this fact washed ashore in Eastern Indonesia this week. A large amount of waste, including drinking cups and flip-flops, was found in the stomach of a whale that died off the coast near Kapota Island.

The 9.5-metre sperm whale (抹香鲸) was found by rescuers from the Wakatobi National Park. The whale had swallowed 5.9 kilograms of plastic waste containing 115 plastic cups, four plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, and more than 1,000 other kinds of pieces of plastic, park chief Heri Santoso told the reporter.

“Although we have not been able to   deduce the cause of death, the facts that we see are truly awful,” said Dwi Suprapti, a marine species conservation co-ordinator at WWF Indonesia. She said it was not possible to determine if the plastic had caused the whale’s death because of the animal’s advanced state of decay (腐烂). But this is only the latest.

Four Asian nations—Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand—account for 50% of the plastic waste in the oceans, according to a report by environmental campaigner Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment. The Philippines is second to Indonesia when it comes to putting away plastic waste in the oceans, according to a study published in the journal Science in January. Of the 3.2 million mismanaged waste it produces every year, 1.29 million ends up in the ocean.

A report released earlier this year stated that the amount of plastic in the ocean is likely to increase.

A.Its stomach is the home of plastic waste.
B.It died of swallowing lots of plastic waste.
C.It was the first whale to eat plastic waste.
D.It had eaten much plastic waste before its death.
2. Which can best replace the underlined word “deduce” in paragraph 3?
A.confirmB.cause
C.approveD.contain
3. Which country dumps the most plastic waste into the oceans?

7 . With the advance of human society, along with the development of modern science and technology, people are faced with an increasing number of pollutions. One of the severe pollutions is noise pollution. Many parents express their complaints over noise pollution, especially car alarms.

Anchor

Almost anyone who has lived in a big city can tell you how irritating it is to be awakened in the middle of the night by the wail of a car alarm. The loss of sleep can drive you crazy, but this is just one in a long list of problems that such high decibel noises can cause.

Jonathan

People in this noisy neighborhood in upper Manhattan are fed up with car alarms. They're angry enough at being jolted awake several times a week, but more than that they worry about what effect these alarms will have on their children. Already studies have shown that continuous exposure to high-decibel noise can cause an increase in heart rate and blood pressure.

Andrea

By the time my child can read, he will already have been exposed to the constant roar of the traffic, but the intense siren of a car alarm is way above the level of safety.

Michael

I have a valid concern. According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), exposure to noise above 85 decibels for 8 hours or more is a danger to your health. City traffic and trucks are about 90 decibels. The siren of a car alarm is about 120 decibels, about the same as a plane taking off.

The parents here are sick and tired of listening to the shrill siren of car alarms. However, it's for their children that they are most concerned. They've started a group called Parents to Silence Car Alarms. They don't think that making the owner of a car pay a fine is enough. These parents have started a campaign to have car alarms banned.

1. According to the passage, which one of the following statements is true?
A.Anchor thinks the high decibel noises only causes the loss of sleep.
B.Jonathan holds the view that exposure to decibel noises can give rise to heart disease.
C.According to NIOSH, exposure to noise above 85 for 8 hours or more threatens people's health.
D.Andrea believes the intense siren of a car alarm is acceptable.
2. According to the passage, what is the parents' attitude towards car alarms?
A.Neutral.B.Critical.C.Favorable.D.Indifferent.
3. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.People in modern society is faced with noise pollution.
B.Anyone who lives in a big city is tired of car alarms.
C.A car alarm is out of control and beyond the level of safety.
D.Parents complain about car alarms, trying to fight against them.

8 . Health officials in Canada are very busy these days. They are placing chickens at fixed points all along their border with the United States of America. That’s a great distance of 2,500km. It’s not a practical joke, nor have the Canadians gone mad. They are using these chickens to see if the deadly West Nile virus is hiding around. The virus infects birds, so they think that the chickens have a good chance of catching the virus, or the virus will catch the chickens. The Canadians are worried because the West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. It killed seven people in New York last year.

Countries around the world are realizing something important that it may just be possible to stop certain kinds of people from entering their land, but it is very difficult to stop viruses travelling from one end of the earth to the other. When they travel to new places, they sometimes adjust very easily to those climates and start destroying the local plant and animal life. These biological polluters are called smart polluters, which can be carried across borders of countries unknowingly. Just as we humans are travelling across the globe more often than earlier, these biological polluters have also started journeying much more. They travel in the ballast(压舱物)of tankers. They sneak into aircraft through their wheels. They bore their way into objects that air travelers may be carrying from one country to another.

The customs officials in many foreign countries prevent you from bringing in a small plant, or a decorative item made of wood that is in its natural form. They tell you it’s in the rules. They have these rules because they know that these varieties of plants that are special to specific places have the power to spread new diseases among native plants and animals. They always create problems in places where they do not belong. Viruses causing these new diseases could come with special varieties of plants, bugs or even animals.

1. Which of the following best explains “transmitted” underlined in Paragraph 1?
A.Passed.B.Supplied.
C.Promised.D.Addressed
2. Why is it very difficult to stop viruses travelling?
A.They can hide from anyone.
B.They can never be killed in any case.
C.They can be spread by many approaches.
D.They can evolve to suit any environment.
3. What can we infer about customs rules from the last paragraph?
A.Native plants and animals mustn’t be exported.
B.Animals can be brought into any country freely.
C.No plants can be brought across country borders.
D.Special living things are forbidden to be imported.
4. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A.Wipe Out All the VirusesB.The Smart Polluters
C.The Basic Customs RulesD.A Practical Joke of Canada

9 . Engineers have put a huge garbage collector to gather plastic material in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii, the world's largest spread of garbage, twice the size of the state of Texas.

The Ocean Cleanup organization created the collector. The group's founder, Boyan Slat, an inventor born in 1994, was just 16 when he was moved to clean up the oceans when he was on a dive and saw more plastic bags than fish

Last Saturday, a ship pulling the pipe-shaped floating barrier left San Francisco. Attached to it is a screening skirt that hangs three meters down in the water. The screen is designed to collect the plastic as it moves through the water. Sea animals can safely swim under the barrier

The cleanup system also comes with lights powered by the sun, cameras, and other special devices, so the system can communicate its position at all times. That way a support ship can find it every few months to remove the plastic that has been collected.

Shipping containers will hold all the plastic gathered , including bottles and fishing equipment and are expected to be back on land within a year. Then the plastic will be recycled. The free-floating barriers are made to survive extreme weather conditions and damage from continual use. They will stay in the water for twenty years , thus collecting 90% ofthe garbage in the area.

The Ocean Cleanup has received $ 35 million in donations to pay for the project, hoping to put 60 free-floating barriers in the Pacific Ocean by 2020. "It's important to turn off the taps on plastic entering the ocean, but I also think people can do more than one thing at a time to deal with this problem," Slat said.

1. What drove Slat to invent the collector?
A.The interest in invention.
B.His failure to dive due to rubbish.
C.The sight of too many plastic bags.
D.His knowledge ofgarbage in the Pacific Ocean.
2. How does the floating barrier work?
A.It reaches into the water to collect the plastic.
B.It has large containers to produce power.
C.It forms barriers to protect sea animals.
D.A ship drags it along in the ocean.
3. Which does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The support ship.
B.The floating barrier.
C.The plastic to be recycled.
D.The position of special devices.
4. What is important for protecting the ocean according to Slat?
A.Sending more collectors into the ocean.
B.Inventing more ocean cleanup devices.
C.Stopping plastic from entering the ocean.
D.Banning the use ofplastic bags in boats.

10 . Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

Many people know that trash is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don’t know is that trash has become a problem in outer space too.     1

Statistically, there are more than 22,000 pieces of junk in space around the earth. And these are just the items that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes or radars.     2

Objects, like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds, so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become dangerous to people, particularly astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashed into a spacecraft, it could damage the vehicle. That’s because the faster an object moves, the greater the impact if the object collides with something else.

To help minimize additional space junk, countries around the world have agreed to limit the time their space tools stay in orbit to 25 years. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth’s atmosphere, or the mass of gases that surround the earth, after that.       3

Many scientists are also proposing different ways to clean up space junk. The Germans have been planning a space mission with robots that would collect pieces of space trash and bring them back to Earth so that they can be safely destroyed.

"In our opinion the problem is very challenging, and it's quite urgent as well," said Marco Castronuovo, an Italian Space Agency researcher who is working to solve the problem.       4     Many of these objects are tools that help people use their cell phones or computers.

"The time to act is now; as we go farther in time we will need to remove more and more fragments," he says.

A.One reason that it’s urgent is that countries are sending more and more objects into space.
B.There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can’t see.
C.Blowing up older satellites with a missile may create thousands of smaller pieces!
D.In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.
E.When two objects in space collide, the two objects break into many smaller pieces.
F.Years of space exploration have left tons of “space junk” in orbit around the planet.
