文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章通过愚人节笑话是好主意还是坏主意作为引入,说明了人们对笑话的看法各不相同,应该谨慎开玩笑。

1 . Over the years, April Fools’ Day has become larger than life. While it may be seen as just a bit of fun, there is more to jokes and humour than may be obvious, begging the question: are the jokes on the 1st of April a good or a bad idea?

Every year, individuals and newspapers present jokes on the 1st of April that may be funny, yet sometimes causing an unexpected upheaval. One radio announcement made in 1949, that a mile-wide swarm of wasps (一群黄蜂) was heading for Auckland, was taken a bit too seriously. The news even came with advice on how to prepare for the incoming insects, resulting in all residents walking outdoors tucking (塞) their trousers into their socks, wearing masks (面罩) as well as setting honey traps outside their doors.

What makes things funny? This is a million-dollar question and one that’s not easily answered. First, it’s influenced by the context, the culture, and personal opinions, meaning that it’s not consistent (一致的) across populations. Besides, if a joke is violating (违反) a norm or rule, it’s more likely to be regarded as funny. Such violations need to be harmless, as they can otherwise be considered unpleasant. In terms of personal experience, serious events may be considered funnier over time, while stubbing (踩) a toe, considered a small violation, would lose its comedic effect over time. Interestingly, people, children, in particular, have been found to be more likely to laugh when they are near others compared to when alone.

Jokes may not seem serious but can actually serve social functions like managing emotions and also be used to deal with matters in work. For example, studies have found that there is a meaningful function of humour in healthcare settings, as it strengthens the connection between medical staffs and patients as well as relieves stressful situations linked to end-of-life care among nursing professionals.

However, it’s suggested that jokes be used cautiously. For example, David Letterman gained reputation (名声) for an interview he had done with Lindsay Lohan in 2013, when the audience had laughed loudly at his repeated questions about her going to receive treatment. However, 8 years later, his comments were seen as offensive (冒犯的). So it’s important to ensure that any violations made are not significant enough to damage your future fame.

1. What does the underlined word “upheaval” probably mean in paragraph 2?
A.Upset.B.Fun.C.Annoyance.D.Popularity.
2. What can we learn about jokes from the passage?
A.People’s opinion of jokes differs.B.Jokes remain humorous all the time.
C.Jokes can strengthen our connection.D.Children are more likely to laugh than adults.
3. How does the author mainly share her understanding of jokes with us?
A.By listing figures.B.By making comparisons.
C.By giving examples.D.By answering questions.
4. What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To tell us the function of jokes.B.To provide information about jokes.
C.To help make up funny jokes.D.To propose telling jokes carefully.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍的是选择独处是有好处的,同时分析了选择独处的原因也很重要。

2 . Are you one of those people who like spending time alone? If so, you probably already know that there are some people who will scold you for it. They think you are alone because you are anxious around other people and just don’t have very positive relationships with humans.     1

This is a common phenomenon of being alone for too long. Recently, scholars have increasingly recognized the value of spending time alone.     2     They believe that spending time alone is good for creativity, self-insight, self-development, relaxation, and spirituality.

3     One of the most important facts is whether you choose to be alone. If you are spending time alone because that’s what you want, then that will probably be a psychologically healthy experience. If instead you are home alone feeling despondent because you really want to be with other people, that’s much more problematic.

As important as that distinction is, some scholars believe it is not enough. Even people who choose to be alone, they point out, can do so for different reasons.     4     Others, however, are more likely to be indicative of good psychological health.

For young people, spending time al one for positive reasons is associated with a number of healthy psychological experiences. Those who are alone for negative reasons are worrying. However, wanting to be alone for positive reasons and wanting to be alone for negative reasons are not completely separate.     5     Some people want to be alone for two reasons.

A.They have even documented it.
B.They are forced to spend much time alone.
C.There is a small relevance between the two.
D.They assume you are lonely and depressed.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了语音网络的流行情况以及存在的挑战。

3 . We’re getting more used to chatting to our computers and smart phones through all kinds of voice assistants.     1     People who can’t read or write can send and get information using the spoken web.

Some think voice could soon become the main way to interact online. They believe online interaction would soon depend mainly on the spoken web.     2

Building the spoken web-web-to-voice and voice-to-web — is by no means an easy task. For software, to answer simple questions about the weather and play music for us is easy.     3     AI technology isn’t smart enough yet. Even turning your voice into text is one of the hardest problems for it to solve. There are as many ways to pronounce things as there are people on the planet.

Using voice interaction makes people feel much kinder than surfing the net in the old way.     4     But if something speaks, it must also listen. Our phones are always near us and they are constantly collecting our personal information. This has already raised privacy concerns.

5     When you are driving or cooking, the voice assistant will be helpful. On the other hand, in a quiet library, using voice assistants to do something may not be as suitable as typing, as it could disturb others. The effectiveness of using voice depends on the specific surroundings.

A.Yet who can use the spoken web?
B.It is also possible to help teachers give lessons.
C.But what are the challenges of moving to the spoken web?
D.The voice of the assistant makes us feel like talking to a real person.
E.Out of these voice assistants, Siri is the most well-known spoken web.
F.The benefits of using voice obviously depend on the situation you are in.
G.However, to have a conversation with users on different kinds of topics is a long way off.

文章大意:本文是新闻报道。讲述了一段为了吸引网络关注精心制作的一段短视频被公安部辟谣。

5 . The Ministry of Public Security has exposed a video that sparked a nationwide search after it was universally viewed on social media.

The video, describing homework booklets supposedly lost by a Chinese first grader in Paris, was revealed to be a carefully crafted play for online attention. The local ministry also presented details of 10 relevant highly-concerned cases, highlighting the Paris homework incident as a typical example.

The video was uploaded in February by a blogger surnamed Xu, from Zhejiang province. It showed a Parisian restaurant worker supposedly returning homework found in a restroom. The video said the homework belonged to Qin Lang from Class Eight, without specifying the school. That sparked a social media craze, with many netizens attempting to locate the child.

However, the narrative quickly unfolded. A user claiming to be Qin Lang’s uncle appeared in the comments section. Following investigations revealed the person making the comment, a person surnamed Yang from Jiangsu province, was another participant in the play to gain online attention and was not related to Xu.

Further investigation by authorities exposed the entire act. Police discovered that Xu, along with her company director scripted the video, purchased a homework booklet online and staged the entire scene.

Facing administrative punishments and demands for public apologies, Xu admitted her initial lack of “legal awareness” but expressed regret for the widespread attention and disturbance caused by the video. Her social media accounts, with millions of followers across many platforms, have been canceled.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了关于一次性塑料垃圾问题的现状、原因以及相关的解决策略。

6 . Every order of takeout comes with a side of single-use plastics and each plastic fork. knife, spoon and straw-whether or not you wanted it or used it-ends up in the trash.

New research found that 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste was generated in 2021-six million metric tons more single-use plastics compared to 2019. A hunger for takeout meals during the pandemic contributed to the surge.

An estimated 60% of Americans order takeout or delivery at least once a week and online ordering is growing 300% faster than in-house dining; that means millions of single-use plastic utensils (餐具) are going out with every order.

New laws aim to address the problem. Some of the recent bills are thanks to The National Reuse Network, part of the environmental nonprofit Upstream, which launched a national Skip the Stuff campaign to work out policies that require restaurants to include single-use plastic utensils, straws, and napkins only when customers request them.

The bills also require meal delivery and online apps like Uber Eats, GrubHub and Door Dash to add single-use extras to their menus; customers can choose the items and quantities to have them included in the order. Customers that don’t order the single-use plastics won’t receive them. The goal of the bills is to reduce the 40 billion plastic utensils sent to the landfill (垃圾填埋场) every year.

“Most of the time, people are taking food home or to their offices where there are reusable utensils so these utensils wind up in a drawer or get thrown out,” says Alexis Goldsmith, national organizing director for a nationwide project Beyond Plastics. “Some people do need utensils, but for the most part, they’re not needed.”

To date, Skip the Stuff bills have been passed in several cities, including Denver, Washington, D.C. and Chicago, California and Washington state passed statewide bills that make single-use plastic “accessories” available with takeout orders only upon request.

Organizations like Upstream, Beyond plastics and NRDC have created toolkits to help additional communities launch their own Skip the Stuff campaigns.

1. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Great desire.B.Sharp decline.C.Rapid increase.D.Obvious panic.
2. According to the Skip the Stuff campaign, what can be done by restaurants?
A.Choosing green products.B.Adding single-use napkins.
C.Recycling and reusing utensils.D.Providing utensils only on request.
3. What’s the purpose of the recent new bills?
A.To reduce plastic waste.B.To stop bad eating habits.
C.To encourage people to eat out.D.To better the dining environment.
4. What would Goldsmith probably think of the Skip the Stuff campaign?
A.Unimportant.B.Damaging.C.Much-needed.D.Well-known.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了美国沃特金斯小学开设FRESH FARM课程,让学生种植蔬菜,上烹饪课。该项目使得学生更重视健康,反响良好。

7 . Stacy Dean, an official at the US Department of Agriculture, was inspired by a visit to Watkins Elementary, in Washington, D. C. Students grow vegetables in their school garden. They also roll up their sleeves in the school’s kitchen to participate in a FRESHFARM FoodPrints class, which integrates cooking and nutrition education.

“Who’s next?” asks instructional coach Regina Green, as kids throw vegetables into the pan and the smell of fresh ginger and onions fills the air. “We grew these in our garden,” Jessie Gibson, one of the students, says proudly. Then he measures and pours dry ingredients into a bowl.

“Our family has tried new things because of the program,” says Catie Kelley, whose two children have participated in the FRESHFARM program. “They come home with the recipes,” Kelley says. “It’s fun because it’s things that we don’t usually make at home,” so it has encouraged them to try novel combinations. She says the kids take more of an interest at the grocery store to identify foods they’ve tried in the program.

Dean wants to have the science around healthy eating integrated. A block to scaling up these types of programs is money. The program relies on grants and receives some federal funding, but it’s not enough to expand the program to all the schools that could benefit.

In fact, there are other problems. At a time when diet-related disease is a leading cause of death, and unhealthy eating habits are rooted in US culture, it’s unrealistic to think that a cooking curriculum could overcome such a sweeping, societal problem. “We know from years of evidence that we need multiple things to come together to support healthy eating,” says Angela Odoms-Young, a professor of maternal and child nutrition at Cornell University.

Despite these challenges, programs like FRESHFARM can help kids expand their choices by introducing them to new tastes. At first, many kids are turned off by the bitter taste of greens. But through the magic of cooking, processing the onions, and blending in fresh ginger, kids can be inspired.

1. What inspired Dean during the visit to Watkins Elementary?
A.The coach’s skillful performance.
B.Students’ getting more access to nature.
C.The integrated hands-on cooking.
D.Students’ gardening and cooking.
2. How does the program benefit Kelley’s family?
A.They pay more attention to healthy eating.
B.They have a more harmonious relation.
C.They show more interest in shopping.
D.They have enriched their recipes.
3. What can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A.Advocating healthy eating needs joint efforts.
B.A cooking curriculum should be promoted.
C.Nutrition helps put students on a healthy path.
D.Food is fundamental to life and good health.
4. What does the author think of the program?
A.Complex.B.Widespread.C.Effective.D.Easily-operated.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章主要围绕“这一代青少年与以往几代的不同之处”,分析了这一代青少年面临的新挑战和机遇,并指出了社交媒体等新技术对他们的影响。

8 . Fragile. Oversensitive. Glued to their phones. Is this what comes to mind when we think of the teens of this generation? While there may be a grain of truth to these stereotypical (刻板印象的) characteristics, there might be more to this generation of teens than what is generally regarded.

Never before have the lives of any generation of teens been as overwhelmed with mobile technology and social media as the teens of this generation. It follows then that there will be unique mental and emotional problems resulting from this new age of technology. As compared to their parents or grandparents who were likely less connected and more isolated, these teens are constantly exposed to their social circles and beyond. It is no wonder then that the mental health of this generation’s teens have been badly affected.

Moreover, as many of the older generations complain, the teens today are more individualistic in contrast to the more community-centered attitude of their parents and grandparents. Gone is the closeness amongst neighbors who are friendly with one another and quick to offer a helping hand when they see another in need. In its place, we have teens who may not even have a clue as to who lives in the unit next to theirs, much less offer a friendly nod or wave when they happen to cross paths with a neighbour.

Yet, the effects of technology on this generation of teens are not all bad. Actually, the very connectedness that social media brings about has led to an opening of minds and a flourishing of dialogue among people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. In comparison, the parents or grandparents of this generation of teens probably did not have the same opportunity to get to know people outside of their social circles at their age, and are thus more likely to have fixed stereotypical opinions of people different from them.

To conclude, the teens of this generation differ in many ways from their past generations, in some ways more positive than others. Every generation is a product of the cultural, political and economic events of their time.

1. What can we learn about the teens of this generation?
A.They are open-minded and tolerant.
B.They enjoy the closeness with their neighbors.
C.They are a weak and oversensitive generation.
D.They dislike people different from themselves.
2. What might cause damage to the mental health of the teens now?
A.High pressure from their academic demands.
B.Great distance from their family and relatives.
C.Too much time spent on social networking online.
D.Huge influence from their parents and grandparents.
3. What is the text mainly about?
A.The sharp difference between generations.
B.The digital divide that is hard to be bridged.
C.The great benefits modern technology has brought.
D.The recognition of the community-centered attitude.
4. What’s the author’s attitude towards the teens of this generation?
A.Indifferent.B.Concerned.C.Objective.D.Approving.

10 . I came across an image recently of a distance runner with a message that told readers to persevere (坚持) at all costs. It reminded me of a conversation I had. My colleague’s teaching assistant was asking for my advice. He wanted to know when to quit something. He described how he’d been playing an online game with people for some time. It hadn’t been very fun lately, but there was always that small chance of a reward (upgraded equipment, etc).

I inquired further about his relationship with the players and his gains from the game. I then discussed the sunk cost dilemma, a concept I studied in advanced school due to its personal impact. In high school, I applied to five universities, planning to choose the cheapest one. SUU offered the best scholarship, and after paying a $100 commitment fee, I heard back from another school with an even better scholarship. Despite the new offer, I stayed committed to SUU, believing that switching schools, even if it meant acknowledging the “wasted” $ 100, would have been the wiser financial choice.

A rational (理性的) decision maker is not ruled by past investments, but weighs future outcomes. I didn’t focus on future outcomes when weighing colleges. I focused on the money I sunk into SUU. Rather than evaluating future career options, I focused on the fact that I’d already taken elementary education courses.

I’m not the only one that’s fallen prey to this. I wear clothes I dislike simply because I spent money on them (and that money won’t come back). Unhealthy relationships last because of the invested time (leading to more unhappy years). However, time, effort, or money that you’ve invested doesn’t mean you should continue. Society often stresses perseverance — never quit, never give up, don’t waste. However, only you know your right path. Walking away can be the toughest choice. You might realize a path you’re on is no longer the right one or never was.

1. Why does the author introduce a distance runner’s image at first?
A.To make a contrast.B.To give a definition.
C.To draw a conclusion.D.To illustrate a theory.
2. What is the common characteristic of a rational decision maker?
A.Following suit as most people.B.Taking elementary education.
C.Valuing the development in future.D.Overlooking past investments.
3. What does the underlined idiom “fallen prey to” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Get benefits from.B.Be harmed by.C.Be interested in.D.Get rid of.
4. Which is the best title of the text?
A.Perseverance is a virtueB.The chosen path is the toughest
C.Cut your losses for your winnersD.Walking away means losing all
