Ezri and Oliver were so keen to climb the mountain that they begged to join their dad Brandon for another hike. Just after 8 a. m. on a beautiful Sunday morning, they set off. Brandon’s backpack held his phone, Clif bars (能量棒), packets of apple sauce, apples, water bottles and fishing gear.
Brandon had planned a varied route up the mountain. The winding upward slope was fun and uneventful. Near the top, thick snow blanketed the path. Excitedly, the kids raced across the hard surface. They shared the second-last Clif bar and rested for an hour. Brandon looked around. His phone showed 1:30 p. m. and no signals.
When the kids started down, Brandon said, “You guys really want to find those fishing lakes, don’t you?”
“Oh, yes!” Ezri said. So they took an unfamiliar route down the other side of the mountain.
By the time Brandon realized the path had become an animal trail alongside a stream, it made sense to keep following it. The stream sang to them, and they kept following it down. Mid afternoon, when the sun disappeared behind heavy gray clouds, they suddenly felt lost, cold and hungry. For half an hour they cautiously moved downward until they reached a steep cliff (悬崖) edge. The stream became a noisy, six-metre waterfall. Mist enveloped them as the water raced over a huge rock.
Brandon cursed (咒骂) himself for taking an unknown route down. They held hands and inched down until Oliver slid on a loose rock and all three went flying.
Brandon wiped blood from his forehead and gathered his senses. Was anyone hurt? Oliver, crying and shivering, seemed okay. Ezri was weeping, but she too appeared uninjured. Brandon himself didn’t feel anything worse than the wound on his forehead. The backpack was stuck in the rocks six meters away. He saw no use trying to find it back. The air was cold and getting colder. They were wet and tired.

3 . Rescuers in Jersey said Sunday after an all-night search that there was no hope of survivors from an explosion that flattened a three-story apartment block. At least three people were confirmed killed in the accident early Saturday in the Channel island’s port capital St Helier, following a suspected gas leak. “We have three confirmed deaths and it’s fair to say we expect to find more,” police chief Robin Smith told a news conference, saying that around 12 residents remained unaccounted for. “It is with sadness that I am confirming that the search-and-rescue operation has been moved to a recovery operation,” he said.
The phase involved a “painstaking search of the debris” which could take weeks, Smith said, adding that a gas leak was the ‘likely” cause. Aided by sniffer dogs and experts from southern England, Jersey emergency workers had searched the rubble (瓦砾)overnight.
Fire chief Paul Brown confirmed that firefighters were called out to investigate the smell of gas on Friday evening, more than seven hours before the explosion. But in vain. He admitted that something had gone “horribly wrong”, considering the subsequent disaster, but insisted that Jersey islanders could still have confidence in his service. Jersey’s gas supplier, Island Energy, said it was working with the fire service to understand what happened.
Like many others in St Helier, Jersey’s Chief Minister Kristina Moore said she was awoken by the explosion. “Across the island you could hear this extraordinary sound,” she told the BBC. “It’s unthinkable news, so we’re all absolutely shocked and really worried about the people who are involved and about those whose lives have been lost.”
The incident caps a tragic week for Jersey, a British Crown dependency not part of the United Kingdom, whose economy relies on banking, tourism and fishing. “We must call on the collective strength of the island community,” Moore said.

5 . On June 23,2018,twelve young Thai boys and their assistant football coach wandered into a karst cave in northern Thailand, near the border with Myanmar. What happened next would grab the world’s attention and lead to a complex and daring international rescue operation. The 10.3-kilometer-long Tham Luang cave flooded, trapping the boys in total blackness nearly 2.5 kilometers from the cave entrance.
Thousands of people from around the globe participated in the rescue effort, including military personnel, medical experts and the rock stars of the operation — cave divers. The divers, who safely removed all of the Thai children and their coach after 18 days underground, dealt with tight spaces and low visibility in muddy water- conditions that would prove deadly: Saman Gunan, a former Thai Navy Seal, died while transporting air tanks into the cave.
While the sport of cave diving had received attention in the pop culture area prior to the rescue mission in North Thailand, there is little doubt that the brave divers at Tham Luang cave helped push the activity and its varieties of risks into global society’s minds.
The sport-often referred to as among the world’s most dangerous recreational activities-has its roots in pre-WWII England. Since then, the recreational practice of cave diving, described by Australian cave explorer Richard Harris (a participant in the Tham Luang cave rescue) as an “unusual hobby” for “the ordinary,” has spread around the world-China included.
Over 1,000 kilometers northeast of Tham Luang cave, in South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, lies karst-peak-covered Du’an county-China’s little-known cave diving Mecca.
Home to thousands of kilometers of underground rivers, Du’an county offers divers spellbinding geological formations, perhaps the world’s largest collection of blind fish species and a rare variety of freshwater jellyfish.
1. What do we know about the Tham Luang cave rescue operation?A.There was no loss of life in the process. | B.Rock stars took part in the rescue efforts. |

In the summer of 2002, Linda was about to enter sixth grade after having recently moved. Being new to town, her mother decided to sign her up for Girl Scouts(女童子军). The benefits of the Girl Scouts were well-known:developing leadership skills, creating a strong sense of self, encouraging healthy relationships among others. One of the most important parts of the program involved developing healthy relationships, often leading to unbreakable bonds, sometimes through the Buddy(伙伴) Program.
Soon Linda joined Pisgah Girl Scout Camp in Brevard, North Carolina, where she was paired with a buddy named Rose in a four-person tent. At camp, Linda and Rose's lives were closely connected together. As a Girl Scout, Linda was taught to have someone to rely on, to know where she is going, to talk over things, and to make friends. Little did she know how important that single skill would be in her life.
One afternoon, a storm blew in and sent the girls all to their tents. Lightning(闪电) struck a tree outside the girls' tent. As bad luck would have it, Linda had been standing on her metal bed at the time. Lightning traveled from the metal clothesline between that tree and another one-burning all the bathing suits-went down into the tree roots, which were tied up into the floorboards of the tents, and hit her bed. Very soon, two-thirds of Linda's body was burned. Linda was lying on the floor badly burned and unable to move.
The other three girls in the tent were frightened to death. They screamed and ran from the tent, not noticing what was happening to Linda, but Rose quickly realized her buddy was not among them.

The dramatic incident occurred during an afternoon hike. Four friends and teammates from Northwest College in Cody , Wyoming, had been hiking in the Montana national forest. As they hiked, a bear suddenly attacked the closest hiker Brady Lowry. “It shook me around and I didn't know what to do,” Brady recalled the terrifying attack. The bear shook him by the arm and then threw him away.
Brady's friend, Kendall Cummings, reacted quickly to try to scare the bear away. He yelled and kicked at the bear and pulled on the bear's fur. “I didn't want to lose my friend,” said Kendall.“I could have run and potentially lost a friend but I didn't do that. I thought I would get him off and save him.”
The bear turned its attention to Kendall and knocked him to the ground. In protecting his friend, Kendall became the target of the bear's forceful attack. Eventually, the other teammates scared the bear enough so that it soon withdrew and ran off.
After the attack, Kendall was badly injured, but he managed to pull himself up. The teammates then helped Kendall off the mountain by supporting his weight and carrying him part of the way. Once the boys reached a location with cell service, they dialed 911 for help.
After half an hour, some rescuers arrived at the scene. They examined Kendall and Brady and they were sent to Billings Clinic Hospital in a rush for their injuries. Brady broke his arm and suffered serious wounds in the initial attack. Kendall underwent surgery for more serious injuries on his face and arm. Both boys were on the road to recovery. Their wrestling coach, Jim Zeigler, arrived at the hospital along with the rest of the team to offer support.

As I walked along the sidewalk in front of Surplus Unlimited, a car that was about to change my life had just turned onto Route 82 from the CVS parking lot. I looked up and noticed the elderly couple in the car heading toward me. As the car rolled past, the driver suddenly collapsed against the steering wheel (方向盘) right in front of my eyes. His wife stared blankly out of the passenger side window. She was unaware that her car was now rolling—without a conscious driver—down the center of a busy road.
I began to jog alongside the moving car. My mind assessed the situation. Somebody needed to stop that car!
I reached forward, but there was nothing to grab. I pounded on her window. She looked confused. “Roll down the window!” I yelled, gesturing wildly. With the window down, I was able to grab the doorframe. I pulled hard against the force of the moving vehicle. On the far side of the car, the traffic streamed by in the opposite direction. Cars passed one after another. Nobody slowed down. Nobody seemed to notice.
Thankfully, the driver’s foot must have slipped off the gas pedal (踏板) when he lost consciousness. I kept pulling, and the car began to slow.
Just then, a woman appeared from behind me. She ran alongside the driver side door. She opened the door and as the car was slowing, she managed to shift it out of “Drive”. A joyful “We did it!” feeling swept over me.
But the car was now stopped in the center lane (车道) with traffic still moving in both directions around us and we need to help this man. Quickly! The woman called 911 while I checked his vital signs. He was not breathing. He had no pulse. He had about five minutes until he was dead. CPR was needed in to time.
