One night,     1     winter, a bear came into the city in Vancouver Canada. It walked through the city streets past houses, shops and offices. Then it     2     (find) some food in bins outside a restaurant and started eating. In the morning, someone saw the bear and called the police. The police came with a vet (兽医) from the city zoo. They put the bear in a lorry and took it to the mountains outside the city.     3     (lucky), the bear was safe. But     4     happens in other countries when big animals come into cities? In Vancouver it is unusual     5     (see) a bear, but in some cities you can see big animals on the city streets every day.

Big animals usually come into cities to find food. In Cape Town in South Africa baboons (狒狒) come into the city when they are     6     (hunger). Human food is very bad for the baboons     7     (tooth) because it has a lot of sugar. Now, there are Baboon Monitors working in Cape Town.     8     (they) job is to find baboons in the city and return them to the countryside.

In Berlin in Germany, pigs sometimes come into the city for food. They eat flowers and plants in parks and gardens. Sometimes they eat vegetables from gardens     9     they walk in the street, causing accidents. Some people like the pigs and they give them food and water to drink. Other people do not like the pigs and they want the government and the police to stop them     10     (enter) the city.

The shopping mall,     1     (很多人喜欢它的环境), was on fire last week because the gas pipes     2     (使用太长时间的) cracked. Those     3     (正在里面购物的) were trapped. It was such a big fire that the world seemed as if it came to an end. Many goods     4     (正在销售的) were destroyed. This was the biggest fire     5     (人们有史以来看到的). Luckily, the firefighters     6     (收到紧急电话的) came at once. They did all     7     (他们能做的) to put out the fire. To our relief , no one was injured or dead.

3 . A Heroic Driver

Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc. One morning in 2009, Larry was___ along 165 north after delivering to one of his ___. Suddenly, he saw a car with its bright lights on. ____he got closer, he found another vehicle upside down on the road. One more look and he noticed ___ shooting out from under the ___ vehicle. Larry pulled over, set the brake and ___the fire extinguisher (灭火器). Two good bursts from the extinguisher and the fire was put out.   

The man who had his bright lights on___ and told Larry he had made an emergency call. They ___ heard a woman’s voice coming from the wrecked (毁坏的) vehicle. ___ the vehicle, they saw that a woman was trying to get out of the broken window. They told her to stay ____ until the emergency personnel arrived, but she thought the car was going to ____. Larry told her that he had already put out the fire and she should not move ____ she injured her neck.   

Once fire and emergency people arrived, Larry and the other man____ and let them go to work. Then, Larry asked the police if he was needed or ____ to go. They let him and the other man go.   

One thing is for certain — Larry went above and beyond the call of duty by getting so close to the burning vehicle! His ____ most likely saved the woman’s life.

5 . Notre-Dame, the cathedral (大教堂) that serves as one of Paris’ most beloved monuments, is on fire. According to The New York Times the fire began around 6: 30 p.m. local time when tourists urgently rushed out of the building. Andre Finot, a spokesman for the cathedral, told The Times that the cause of the fire was still unknown and that no one had been hurt while damage to the building appeared catastrophic(灾难性的).

CNN reports that over 400 firefighters have been sent to fight the fire, but that they may be unable to save the cathedral. Built in the 12th century, Notre-Dame houses several relics important to Catholics (天主教徒). NBC News reports that relics from Saint Genevieve and Saint Denis may be lost, together with a relic believed to be from Jesus Christ’s crown of thorns, but it states that the authorities now believe that the cathedral has been saved from “total destruction”.

Notre-Dame is visited by a reported 30,000 people a day and 13 million people per year. Its destruction represents a global cultural loss. “This is just horrible,” Mohamed Megdoul, 33, a film producer and witness to the fire told The Times, speaking in tears. “A thousand years of history is being wiped away. This belonged to the whole world, and now it’s disappearing.”

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his sadness on Twitter. Other politicians, including Melania Trump, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, also shared their sadness on Twitter.

7 . Luke is a cute dog, living together with me for five years. We get lots of   _________   in our area during the summer season. Many forests are badly _________ by fire each year. That hot summer, not far from our shelter, a forest   _________ fire. It was July, and there had been a heat wave going on for three days.
