Some years ago, a ship headed for China. All the passengers boarded the ship, including an officer, his wife, their only child—a little boy five years old, and a large Newfoundland dog called Bobby. Everybody in the ship liked Bobby, he was so good - tempered and playful, but the boy was the dog’s constant playmate. He was a happy little guy, and the two are so fond of each other.
One evening while the little boy and the dog were playing together, the ship shook suddenly, and splash (扑通一声) went the child into the sea!
A cry was raised, “A hand over! A hand over!” and the brave dog jumped over the side of the ship, and swam towards the boy.
The little boy’s father, half crazy, jumped with others into a small boat; but it was too dark to see far before them. All gave the child up for lost.
At last they heard a splash on the left side of the ship. “Pull on, quick!” cried the father. The boat was turned, the men pulled with all their strength, and in a moment brave Bobby was alongside, holding up the child in his mouth! Joy! Joy! Joy!
The boat was rowed back to the ship; the half-drowned (差点淹死的) boy soon got better; the parents were delighted; and brave Bobby was caressed (抚摸) by all.
At the Cape-of-Good-Hope, the passengers were to be landed. The officer going to the boat, with his wife and child; but he told the sailors to hold the Newfoundland dog tight by the collar till the boat was some distance from the ship. “You will then see,” said he, “what a strong swimmer he is.”
Brave Bobby pulled again and again to get loose, but all failed; for they held him till the boat was near the shore. But as soon as the officer gave the signal, the dog was set free, and away he went into the sea to chase after (追赶) his masters.
Suddenly the poor animal set up a shrill howl, and threw himself out of the water.

I watched a piece of news yesterday. When a driver were driving a bus, he had a heart attack. To save the passengers on the bus, so the driver stopped the bus by the roadside and then loses consciousness(意识). Fortunately, he was rushing to hospital immediately and some doctors saved her. The driver left a deeply impression on me. He considered the passengers’ safeties more important than his life. Which he showed us was his responsibility to others. The driver set good example to me and I decided to be a kind man as him.

8 . National Drowning Prevention Week
National Drowning Prevention Week is July 17-23, 2022, which promotes the awareness of the drowning prevention problem in Canada and the need for individuals, communities, organizations, and government to take action in an effort to save lives. Drowning is preventable!
Measures to Promote
Members of the public, community groups, and government are encouraged to promote the following measures that have been taken from the World Health Organization’s publication Preventing Drowning.
★Teach basic swimming and water safety skills to school-age children aged 6 years and older. Activity Suggestions:
• Offer Swim To Survive sessions to your community during National Drowning Prevention Week
• Promote people to learn to swim by registering in Swim For Life lessons
• Work with local schools to book swimming lessons in the upcoming year
★Provide community-based childcare for preschool children to reduce the drowning risk.
•Work with local officials to create childcare options that are less than 20 minutes away for all communities
★Train bystanders in safe rescue and CPR (心肺复苏). Activity Suggestions:
•Offer free CPR training opportunities to the public during National Drowning Prevention Week
•Promote learning to rescue others by registering in Bronze Medallion
National Drowning Prevention Week Announcements
Since the United Nations (UN) passed a resolution declaring July 25 of each year as World Drowning Prevention Day last year, we have stopped our request for community announcements for National Drowning Prevention Week. This does not lessen the importance of raising awareness during National Drowning Prevention Week, but allows us to focus more on the other important matters.

When I was in the eighth grade, I became interested in mountain climbing. Then I climbed my first mountain— a fairly gentle 3,900-foot peak near where I live in surrey, British Columbia. I loved the challenge of conquering something bigger than myself. I like climbing more and more. Soon I’d climbed nearly l00 peaks. My parents were happy I’d finally found a hobby.
Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, I drove to Oregon to climb 11,240-foot Mount Hood with my friend Mel Olsen. It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less risk of the sun melting the snowpack (积雪). That day, we started at 3 a.m. The temperature was about 14 degrees. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued on together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plateau at about l0,000 feet. By this point, the wind conditions were nasty (极糟糕的). My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. The trail we followed grew narrower and steeper. At around 9 a.m. , we reached an ice step. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on it.
Confident I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a loud noise, and a whole slab of ice broke off the step, right under my foot.
In an instant, I fell backward, rolling down the mountain as if I were a character in a video game. After a few seconds, I came to a stop on a shallow slope just above the Devil’s Kitchen. I’d fallen 600 feet. My clothes were torn into small pieces, my helmet was broken, and my face was bloodied from cuts and scratches. Fortunately, for the most part, I was fine, except that I was suffering from a sharp, great pain in my left leg.
