1 . LAS VEGAS—It was different in the light of day.

There was no “pop, pop, pop” of gunfire, no screams. Just a quiet lot of cars abandoned by those, like Kassidy Owen, who escaped with their lives.

“It's strange to hear the silence” Owen said, “because all I remember was the noise”

The 22-year-old was one of dozens of concertgoers who returned to the scene of the Route 91 Harvest festival on Wednesday morning to fetch the vehicles they left behind as they fled from a gunman raining down bullets from high above in the tower of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino across the street.

Survivors of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas on Sunday needed their cars to move on with their lives-to get back to work, to school, home. It was the first time they were returning to a scene that would forever change them, when joy and celebration and music turned into killing and horror.

Before they could move forward, they had to go back to the place where they thought they were going to die.

Owen had run to her car to hide and had tried to drive away, but she couldn't. People were running, bodies dropped to the ground, and cars bottlenecked in the parking lot. During a brief pause after more than 10 minutes of gunfire, she worried the lights of her SUV made everyone inside a shining target.

“They're shooting again” her best friend's brother screamed. “Turn off the car!”

That's when she got out and fled.

“I just remember shutting the door and running.” Owen said.

Now, nearly three days later, she was back, sitting in the driver's seat of her SUV. Her eyes were swollen and red. This was a long way from over.

“You just keep hearing the gunshots in your head,” Owen said.

1. Why did Kassidy Owen return to the scene of terror?
A.To get back her car for daily life.B.To show sympathy to the victims.
C.To search for her missing friends.D.To look into the cause of the shooting.
2. What does “cars bottlenecked in the parking lot” in Paragraph 7 mean?
A.Cars were abandoned in the parking lot.
B.The parking lot was jammed with cars.
C.The parking lot was covered with broken bottles.
D.Cars broke down in the parking lot.
3. Why did Owen keep hearing the gunshots in her head?
A.Because she had escaped being caught.
B.Because she wanted to find the gunman.
C.Because she couldn't rid herself of those terrible scenes.
D.Because she had saved others' lives by turning off the car.
4. What is talked about in the news story?
A.Survivors went back to where they would die.
B.Owen's experience in Las Vegas.
C.How to survive in a mass shooting.
D.People returned to the unforgettable scene.

7 . "The firefighters of Paris told me they are very hopeful about saving the northern tower, " French Junior Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Twitter late Monday, adding that the firefighting efforts would continue for hours.

The Notre Dame Cathedral(巴黎圣母院), one of the most famous landmarks in the French capital, was engulfed in flames Monday evening as a catastrophic fire tore through the historic structure, collapsing its spire as fire officials raced to save the monument from total destruction.

Video and photos posted on social media showed flames engulfing the cathedral, thus both the ceiling and the 90-meter spire came crashing down. The fire spread to one of the cathedral's towers, but French officials said late Monday that firefighters were optimistic they could save both towers.

French President Emmanuel Macron said a national fundraising campaign would be launched on Tuesday and called on the world's "greatest talents" to assist in the effort. "We will rebuild, Macron told reporters. "We will rebuild Notre Dame because this is what the French expect, because this is what our history deserves.

Officials said there were no deaths in the fire. Jean-Claude Gallet, chief of the Parisian fire department, said one firefighter was injured while responding to the flame. Two-thirds of the cathedral's roof was destroyed,   Gal let   said. The fire broke out just before p. m. minutes after the cathedral, which has been partly rebuilt, closed to the public. Around 30 000 people visit the church daily.

Despite its long history and many treasures the Cathedral needed the help of a writer to become truly famous. Victor Hugo's 1831 novel, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, presented the building to a wide audience of readers. The book's ugly lead character, Quasimodo, serves as a symbol for Paris forgotten   Gothic architecture. Hugo wrote the book to remind people of it, with hope they would work to protect the beautiful old buildings of Paris. The loss of cultural relics will never come again if they are lost only once.   This is a painful loss of world civilization.

1. The following issues are wrongly stated in the text except________________.
A.the Notre Dame Cathedral was totally destroyed
B.firefighters were pessimistic because they couldn't save both towers
C.a national fundraising campaign would be launched to rebuild the cathedral
D.the Cathedral became truly famous for its long history and many treasures
2. What does the underlined word" engulfed" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Flooded.B.Swallowed.
C.Disappeared.D.Constructed.
3. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A fire broke out in the Notre Dame Cathedral
B.The mystery of the Notre Dame Cathedral
C.A national fundraising campaign
D.The rebuilding of the Notre Dame Cathedral

9 . Notre-Dame de Paris, a cathedral church in Paris, is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages. For the French, it represents something immortal, ever-present and unchanging, like a mountain. Built over almost two centuries, the Notre-Dame is, as President Emmanuel Macron said, “where the French lived all their great moments”. Soldiers prayed here before leaving for the Crusades; Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned here; it survived the French Revolution, two World Wars and the Nazi occupation. It is where men bend their knees to profess love and thousands of tourists take photos every day.

A fire, whose cause was not identified yet, engulfed(吞没), on April 15th, the cathedral's upper structure. More than 400 firefighters took part in the 15-hour battle to control the blaze(火苗) that triggered sorrow over the globe. The extent of the damage is still unknown, but the fire destroyed much of the gothic cathedral’s wood-timbered roof and spire(塔尖). The cathedral will certainly be restored (the French government promises), but the sight of flames bringing down the spire moved the world in a manner far exceeding its religious significance.

French Culture Minister Franck Riester on Thursday said the government would draw all the consequences from the huge flames that destroyed the centuries-old Notre Dame Cathedral, adding measures to protect the national heritage were on the table. “Staff from the fire department, the culture ministry and the city town hall rushed to the Cathedral, when the fire started, to protect the main artworks that were inside. The artworks, which include relics such as the Christ's crown of thorns and French king Saint-Louis's 13th century tunic, were first moved to the city town hall and will now be transferred to the nearby Louvre Museum .” the minister told Le Parisian newspaper in an interview without giving details on the possible measures.

1. What can we learn about the Notre-Dame de Paris?

C.It was built by Napoleon Bonaparte.D.It’s still in existence after two World Wars.

3. What is true about the Cathedral in the accident?
A.Only the spire was brought down by the flames.
B.It was completely burnt in the fire.
C.The gilded crown of thorns in it was gone forever.
D.The cause of the accident to the Cathedral was still unknown.
4. According to Franck Riester, what has already done by the government?
A.Rebuild the cathedral.
B.Rescue the artworks inside the cathedral.
C.Transfer the relics to the nearby Louvre Museum.
D.Release the cause of the fire to the public.
