2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

At first, Michael didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to check. That’s when he saw two women and a girl helpless and heartbroken on their doorway.

“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Michael, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Michael’s three youngest kids.

Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint”. The thick smoke caused Michael to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Michael, who has severe lung disease, they were life-threatening.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.

“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.

Michael knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. However, taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar design to his, he made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.

“Baby girl, where are you?”

His throat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled fire instead of the smoke in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan emerged. Still unable to see, Michael fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An unlucky thought crossed his mind: I’m probably gonna die up here.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom.

One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible.

Neighbors called the fire department, and then stood helplessly by, unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as word spread among the crowd that the firefighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire.

Suddenly, a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, and then disappeared into the night.

An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up.

A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her an up-bring on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child’s advantage to live with them.

Finally, the town’s richest resident rose and said, “I can give this child all these advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy.”

Throughout all this, the child remained silent, her eyes on the floor.

“Does anyone else want to speak?” asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者与Gabe在开车去看朋友的路上遭遇泥石流被冲下悬崖,最终获救并积极面对人生的故事。

8 . It was a long weekend in May 2018 and my partner Gabe Rosescu, and I were taking a road trip to go to Nelson, British Columbia and spend some time with our friends. We are both adventurous, and we couldn’t wait to go hiking and exploring. It was our first trip together.

At around 5:30 p. m. on Thursday, May 17, we were driving about 9 miles west of Creston, on a steep mountain road known as the Crowsnest Highway. I was texting updates to my family and enjoying the view. We weren’t aware that there’d recently been flooding in the area. When I looked up from my phone, I saw a wave of mud and a huge tree coming down the mountain, right in front of Gabe’s car. He tried to stop, but it was too late. The mudslide sent our car falling nearly 300 meters down a rocky cliff (悬崖) and our car landed on its side among some trees.

I didn’t know how long we were unconscious. But the body was amazing, and somehow we were both able to crawl (爬) out of the crashed car. We couldn’t get a signal on our cell phones, so all we could think to do was shout for help. After just a few minutes, we heard someone call back. Four passers-by spotted us and came to our rescue. When the emergency medical technicians finally got to our side, they loaded us into separate ambulances. I was in the hospital for a week and a half, but they kept Gabe for six weeks. I was told I would walk with a limp (跛行) for the rest of my life; Gabe permanently lost the vision in his left eye.

Before this all happened, we were happy-go-lucky people. We’re even more sanguine now. We look at everything differently. Despite the injuries we suffered, we’re grateful that we’re still living a pretty good life. The experience also bonded us more. We still go on road trips.

1. Why did the author and Gabe go to Nelson?
A.To go sightseeing.B.To visit their friends.
C.To join in a road trip.D.To look for adventure.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.How the trip was planned.B.Which roads were kept to.
C.How the accident happened.D.What could be seen on the way.
3. What can we learn about the author and Gabe?
A.They both lost their phones.
B.They were both seriously injured.
C.They tried their best to keep conscious.
D.They were sent to hospital by passers-by.
4. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “sanguine” in paragraph 4?
A.Optimistic.B.Fortunate.C.Adventurous.D.Carefree.

9 . Chase Poust is a 7-year-old boy. He and his dad Steven, and his 4-year-old sister, Abigail were out for a family boating trip on Florida’s St. Johns River near Mandarin Point. Chase and Abigail were swimming at the back end of the anchored boat while Steven was on deck (甲板) fishing.

It was an idyllic (悠闲的) outing — until a strong wave came. It was too strong for Abigail to hold onto the boat. Instantly realizing his sister would be swept away, Chase let go of the boat as well to try and reach her.

Steven jumped into the water but after realizing he couldn’t keep up with both kids, he was faced with a hard decision. “I told them I loved them because I wasn’t sure what’s going to happen,” Steven told News-4 JAX. “I tried to stick with both of them. I wore myself out. She drifted away from me.”

Directing Chase to swim to shore for help, Steven stayed behind, keeping as close as he could to Abigail as the life-vest that was keeping her above the waves floated further and further from his reach.

It was a tough go for the 7-year-old, but rather than attempting to swim all out, Chase wisely paced himself. Stopping to float or dog paddle when he was tired, he’d rest and then set off again. It took Chase an hour to reach the shore. Once on solid ground, he ran to the nearest house and called for help.

Rescuers arrived soon to search for Steven and Abigail. Miraculously, the two were found and rescued about an hour later-more than a mile away from the family’s abandoned boat.

1. What happened during the family boating trip?
A.Chase went out fishing alone.B.The boat ran into an anchored boat.
C.Steven fell off the boat by accident.D.Abigail was washed away by a wave.
2. Why was Steven faced with a hard decision?
A.He couldn’t stick with both kids.B.He didn’t know how to swim.
C.He couldn’t find rescuers nearby.D.He wasn’t sure what might happen.
3. What did Steven ask Chase to do after the accident?
A.To hold Abigail tightly.B.To look for helpers.
C.To wait calmly in the water.D.To give the life-vest to Abigail.
4. Which of the following best describes Chase?
A.Brave and clever.B.Innocent and kind.
C.Proud and patient.D.Honest and helpful.

10 . Baby Yoda Joins Oregon Firefighters in Battling Wildfires
