3 . Thirteen-year-old Sean Nichols plays basketball, rides horses, and competes in Taekwondo. That surprises some people because Sean uses a wheelchair.
“If someone has a physical disability, they can still do things that other kids can,” Sean explains. “They either have to do it in a different way, or it’s just a bit harder.” He’s been sharing that message with kids and adults in his community since he was three.
When Sean was a baby, his family learned that he has a spinal condition that makes walking difficult. As he started school each year, he and his mom would talk with his class to help the kids understand why Sean uses a wheelchair. He now talks with kids in younger grades and answers their questions himself.
He also speaks at a nearby university each year and works with people who are studying physical therapy. He helps them understand what it’s like to live with a disability and learn how to treat kids with challenges like his. “It’s great helping people who are going to help other kids down the line,” Sean says.
Sean finds lots of ways to increase disability awareness, including through events at school and in Scouts. He and his coaches demonstrate wheelchair basketball, then observers get to try out a chair. They see how much arm strength it takes. “It’s funny to see all the people say, ‘Oh, this is going to be easy’,” Sean says. “Then after, they take back what they said!” If kids want to race, Sean will race them. At times he goes backward—and still wins!
Sean hopes to change how people with disabilities are seen. “My goal is, if a person later sees someone with a disability, they see a person,” he says, “like themselves.”

5 . On James Owen’s 70th birthday, he saw a video of himself walking with difficulty up to the stage where he was giving a talk. “I looked like an old man,” says Owen, who built a successful career on Wall Street.
He was about 25 pounds overweight and had chronic trouble with his back, knees, and shoulders. But instead of giving in to age, Owen decided to set an ambitious five-year goal: He wanted to be pain-free, and he decided the way to get there was through exercise —even though at the time he couldn’t do a single push-up.
Owen began his new exercise regimen (养生计划) by walking, though he became out of breath after five minutes. But that didn’t discourage him. He kept at the walks every day, along with some stretching. Once he had those basics down, he started weight lifting and hired a personal trainer to teach him and to design a routine he could follow on his own. The last piece was finding other activities he enjoyed, which turned out to be cycling and swimming.
In less than five years, Own was able to do three sets of 50 push-ups each and walk for miles each day. And yes, he was free of aches and pains.
Owen used his experience to write a book called Just Move! A New Approach to Fitness After 50, in which he details how older adults can safely get off the couch and add more movement to their lives. The key: getting started, even if you walk just three blocks, which was all he could manage at first. “Think of it as movement, not exercise,” he says. “The key is slow and steady progress.”
Now 81 and retired, Owen exercises an hour a day, six days a week. “It is the best investment I’ve ever made in my life,” he says.
1. Why did Owen make up his mind to do exercise?A.To celebrate his 70th birthday. |
B.To get rid of his physical pain. |
C.To write a book about exercise. |
D.To find a hobby after retirement. |
A.The exercise he preferred to do. |
B.The routine his trainer designed for him. |
C.The difficulty he met during exercise. |

A.They should invest on Wall Street. |
B.They should only do some slow exercise. |
C.They should do exercise step by step. |
D.They should exercise an hour a day. |

8 . I am a reporter and I feel privileged to have been a witness to history being made. Every time I watch taikonauts salute as the rocket carries them thunders away and flies toward the skies, my heart beats faster and my eyes begin to moisten.
When Yang Liwei, a former fighter jet pilot, displayed the flags of China and the United Nations together during the Shenzhou V mission in 2003 and wrote, “To make use of outer space peacefully and for the benefit of all humankind, the Chinese came to outer space.” He was remembered in the history of China as the person who fulfilled the nation’s l,000-year-old dream of “flying to the heavens”.
In the years that followed, I saw Zhai Zhigang floating out of his spacecraft and waving a Chinese flag among the stars; Jing Haipeng entering China’s first space lab; Wang Yaping demonstrating the beauty of physics to 60 million students far outside the Earth’s atmosphere; and Nie Haisheng creating the China’s record for the longest stay in space.
However, few people realize how taikonauts prepare themselves to be qualified. They need to study advanced mathematics, aerodynamics, astronomy, space science and technology, English, environmental science, medicine, psychology and many other theoretical courses, all in one year, a superhuman task equal to shortening a normal college student’s four-year study plan to 12 months.
Apart from theoretical study, taikonauts must undergo a large amount of physical training. In a pressure chamber, they go through a simulated ascent from ground level to an altitude of 5,000 meters in five minutes, with all the dizziness, sickness and even shock. While training for spacewalks in a weightless environment, they wear a suit weighing over 160 kilograms and stay underwater for four hours at a time, losing two kilograms or more in each period.
I have once interviewed Huang Weifen, who is in charge of taikonauts training. ''Without exceptional perseverance, they don't make it," she said. “Our space knows no boundary, and our exploration will never end.”

9 . People love Shakespeare’s vocabulary and creativity. He used more than 15,000 words in this writing! But Bible’s Old Testament (旧约圣经) only contains 5,642 words, Shakespeare also invented many new terms and phrase.
If someone’s behavior suggested they were not honest and should not be trusted. Shakespeare called them suspicious. If someone was silly and perhaps looked like a fool, Shakespeare found their actions laughable. And for those who offered their opinions on something’s quality, Shakespeare called them critics (评论家). Today, for instance, food critics and film critics give their opinions on food and film.
The familiar phrase “break the ice” comes from Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew. The “ice is broken” when people in a group, who have never met before, begin to talk to each other by doing some activities. More common words were first used by Shakespeare including “road”, “gossip”, “lonely”, “bump” and “hurry”.
Four hundred years after his death. Shakespeare surely lives on, in everyday speech, as the most famous writer of all time.

10 . It's not easy to make an award-winning film. It's even harder for a filmmaker to win a lifetime achievement award. Chinese director Ang Lee was recently given this honor by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
The academy called him “one of the world's most pioneering and revered contemporary filmmakers”. He has made many classic films in different genres. More importantly, whether it's an Eastern or Western story, he is able to bring out its “original flavor” Sohu News said.
Lee came to fame in the 1990s with a comedy trilogy that he calls Father Knows Best. In these three films, he told stories about Chinese families. The success of the trilogy paved his way to Hollywood. He then was hired to direct an adaptation of the British novel Sense and Sensibility, as well as the American drama The Ice Storm and superhero movie Hulk. His career reached a peak with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The film is an exciting combination of different genres—historical romance, martial arts and the classic American Western.
Lee's deep understanding of both East and West comes from his life experience. Born in Taiwan, Lee later studied filmmaking in the US. After graduation, he stayed in Hollywood to look for opportunities. He experienced six years of “development hell” in which he had nearly no income and no chance to direct.
But Lee says the “movie gods” have been very good to him, so he values every chance. In recent years, he has been trying new filmmaking technology, including high-frame rate filming, 3D and other innovations that he believes are the future of film, “A part of you has to keep honest and fresh. I just hope my whole career is like a never-ending film school,” Lee said.
