One day, a student asked his teacher,“ What is greed (贪婪)?” The teacher didn’t answer his question _________, but asked the student to walk through the gate of the chocolate factory next to their school and pick out the biggest chocolate bar he could find. But there was a rule: when he passed through the factory, he could not turn _________.

Once there lived a farmer named Henry. He had a brother, Mike, who was an excellent gardener. Mike was famous for his skill and his beautiful trees.

One day, Henry went to town to visit Mike. “Look, my brother,” said Mike. “Here is the best apple tree from my garden. Take it home and plant it so that you, and your children, and your children’s children can enjoy it.” Henry was pleased with the apple tree and went back home with it. The next morning, he began to wonder where he should plant it.

“If I plant it on the hill,” he said to himself, “the wind might catch it and shake down the fruit; If I plant it close to the road, people will pick some of them; But if I plant it ...” Finally, to his great relief, came up with a good idea. He planted the tree in a corner behind his house, where no one else would notice it.   He expected to enjoy the readdest, juiciest, sweetest apples.

But there was no fruit on the tree the first year, nor the second. Henry sent for his brother and said to him angrily, “You have cheated me. I have been taking good care of the apple tree you gave me. This is the third year and it brings me nothing but leaves.”

When Mike saw where the tree was planted, he laughed and said, “You have planted the tree in such a cold comer without sunlight or warmth. Then, how could you expect flowers and fruit?”

It’s early in the morning and the alarm clock has already rung several times. You have to drag yourself out of bed and rush to school. As a school student, this is probably a common experience for you.

But thanks to new rules, many students in Zhejiang and Heilongjiang provinces can now stay in bed longer than before. On Feb 23rd, the Zhejiang   Department of Education published (公布) a new guideline (指导方针) that asks primary schools to start school later, reported Xinhua News Agency. According to the guideline, start times could vary among different grades and seasons. Grade 1 and 2 should not start school before 8 a.m., while schools should start later in winter. Some schools in Zhejiang province have been chosen to test this new guideline, which is expected to be used in other areas in 2019.

A similar guideline was announced by the education department in Heilongjiang province on February 24th. Since the new semester began in March, students from all primary and junior high schools in the province have been required to arrive at school no earlier than 8 am.. And senior high school students are now required to arrive at school no earlier than 7:30 a. m..

These changes are aimed at making sure students get enough sleep and enough time for breakfast. Before the guideline was published, many primary school students in Zhejiang were required to arrive at school as early as 7 or 7:30 a.m., which left many of them arriving feeling tired and hungry.

These changes have received much praise, “I welcome the move, since this will make sure my son has enough time for breakfast, which is important for his health and growth,” a mother surnamed Xu from Hangzhou, whose son is a first-grade student, told China Daily.

Just as Mary Carskadon, a sleep expert from Brown University, US, told The Atlantic, “Everybody learns better when they’re awake.”

Premier Li Keqiang delivered this year’s Government Work Report. Education is one of the highlights. There will be more good news for school students. They will be much happier than before.

Go to your local public library, and you will find an unusual activity is appearing more and more: Practicing reading with trained dogs. How would you feel about taking time once a week to read aloud to a dog?

Each dog in a reading program experience a special training session. The trainers also receive training; they learn how to interact (互动) with the students and the dogs. Each program has high standards. There have been many studies of the interactions between humans and dogs that show dogs lower people’s blood pressure and heart rate. People become more relaxed and calm and will completely forget what they are scared of when they have a dog nearby.

Unlike at school, where students sit at desks or tables, students and dogs sit together on special reading mats. Some students lie next to the dogs. Each student reads to one dog. The dog has been taught a command to pay attention to the reader. So when the trainer says something to the dog, it focuses on the student at once. But sometimes, the students read the dogs to sleep!

The dog’s trainer is also present. He or she watches the dog carefully to make sure that the dog behaves well. Sometimes, the trainer gives the dog a break when the dog becomes tired. While the trainer doesn’t help with the reading, the trainer talks to the student about the dog and explains how to take care of pets and how to be safe around animals.

Students who read to dogs show the benefits of this interaction. They are calmer and can avoid worrying about getting all the words correct. The dog just wants to hear the story. As students learn more about the dogs they read to, they also learn that they have made a new friend.

Not only do students change their reading habits with the dogs during the program, but they also change their school habits. Their reading skills increase by twelve to twenty percent. They start raising their hands and answering questions more often. They pay more attention in class. Some students start arriving at school earlier and are absent less often.

Dogs are not just for playing fetch with anymore. Now they can help people become better readers. Next time you visit your local library, be on the lookout for four-legged creatures (生物) who want to hear a good story.

Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks bottle with useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another bottle with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do for others, but we may not enjoy them. This bottle gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and doing laundry. Those bottles are very important.     87    

However, we often forget to fill the third bottle—the happiness bottle that we fill with activities that make us happy.     88     Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by, and before we know it, it is time for bed. We all have days like that.

This is why each day we have to make an effort to fill our happiness bottle. I fill mine by going to the dancing class. And I always leave classes more happily than when I enter. This week, I had the pleasure of taking part in a guitar practice in my neighborhood. We show our musical talent and practice music for charity.     89     At the end of the evening, my happiness bottle was filled to top.
