Duncan Smith and Katie Schmidt both always wanted to be firefighters. Now, the two 16-year-olds have started their training at Wellington High School Fire Science Academy in the US.
At the Fire Science Academy, students learn how fire behaves, how to use firefighting tools, how to save people, and of course, how to put out a fire.
The academy recently received a fire truck that will help students become familiar with the trucks used by real firefighters, according to Mark Davis, a teacher at the academy.
“It’s an important part of the program,” Davis said. “It allows our students to understand the everyday tools used in the fire service. It also gives them a sense of pride to enter into public service.” The fire truck will also help students practice before taking the state firefighter test, Davis said.
Schmidt said she was interested in the opportunities the academy presented.“It was my decision to go into this program,” she said. “My dad has been in this service for almost 25 years and I wanted to follow in his footsteps and learn and understand what he goes through in his day-to-day life.”
“The academy is strict and students have to be comfortable with standing to attention for most of the day,” Davis said. “I like the discipline(纪律) aspect because I feel like a lot of high school students sometimes go the wrong way, and with this, it’s not possible,” Schmidt said.

Toronto, Canada, is a fantastic city. It’s large, has many job opportunities, and most importantly, it is open and tolerant(包容的). It is one of the most diverse(多样的)cities in the world, with over 140 languages spoken there. What’s more, 12.5 percent of the city’s population is Chinese.
With all these different groups, it’s no surprise that you can find food from all over the world, from Vietnamese to Ethiopian. Many of these restaurants are located in the Kensington Market area, where there’s also music to hear and art to see.
This diversity is probably the reason why people living there consider it a mysterious place. Speaking to BBC News, travel blogger Alyssa James said, “The city doesn’t give up its secrets easily. I love Toronto because you really have to love it to know it.”
Toronto is also a great place to explore. Bruce Poon Tip told BBC News, “Toronto gives me big city benefits with small-town living.” He added, “it’s clean, it’s safe, it’s secure … and it’s beautiful.” The good news is you won’t miss any of this beauty, as Toronto has a very good public transport system.
It is also famous for being home to many talented computer geniuses. So if you’re hoping to work in the technology industry, Toronto is the place to be.
With all this to offer, it’s not surprising that this Canadian city is a dream place, whether you’re going on a vacation or even looking for a home.

Has anyone ever told you that eating carrots will help you see in the dark? This is just one of many incorrect beliefs you may have heard. Below, TEENS has picked out scientific explanations for three mistakes that people make about their eyes. Let’s take a look.
Can eating carrots improve your eyesight?
Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which helps the eyes to turn light into information for your brain. This allows people to see in darker places. However, eating more carrots won’t help you see better. A certain minimum amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman vision.
If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?
Myopia(近视)can be passed from parents to children. A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents are myopic, there’s a 33 to 60 percent chance that their child will be. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it’s down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopic parents. So if your eyesight is bad, your children might still have good vision.
Do color blind people see the world in black and white?
Color blindness doesn’t usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. They usually can’t tell certain colors apart, especially green and red. Another commonly confused pair of colors is yellow and blue. Our eyes have cone cells(视锥细胞)that sense different wavelengths (波长)of light. If these cells don’t work properly, color blindness occurs.
There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only color blind in low light.
However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is shades of gray.
76. Which can help the eyes to turn light into information for the brain?A.vitamin A | B.vitamin B | C.vitamin C | D.vitamin D |
A.stops the brain from seeing |
B.doesn’t help you see better at all |
C.will give you superhuman vision. |

A.Watching movies for too long. |
B.Getting too little exercise. |
C.Cone cells not working properly. |
D.Changes in the wavelength of light. |

B.To clear up some misunderstandings about our eyes. |

If you look at the top of your phone, you’ll usually see a little symbol that says 3G or 4G.
On March 30, 2019, Shanghai vice mayor Wu Qing made the first 5G video call on a Huawei Mate X Smartphone.
About 100 times faster than 4G networks, 5G will let people download(下载) and upload data (数据) faster than ever before. But 5G won’t just bring faster mobile internet.
For example, 5G will help to make self-driving cars safer. Today’s self-driving test cars have one problem—lag(延迟). When the car “sees” an obstacle(障碍物), it sends this information to a data center and receives instructions.
5G could also be used to help the internet of things(IoT). IoT is a large online network that connects all things and people. Fast internet speeds will be the key to developing this technology.
A.Shanghai has also become the first city in China to start testing 5G networks. |
B.5G will help us buy eggs quickly. |
