4 . This week, in Los Angeles, the MasterChef Junior (少年大厨) contestants (选手) showed what was supposed to be the world’s largest cake. Instead, they made the smallest cake in the world.
What happened to the great cake? They wanted to make a 3, 000-pound cake baked for 35 hours in a 6-foot-wide by 8-foot-deep pan. Sadly, the pan broke up. The chefs quickly came up with the idea to make the world’s smallest cake. But Guinness World Records (吉尼斯世界纪录) will only judge the largest food but not the smallest.
The event was held to improve the new show MasterChef Junior. They hold the competition to open the door for kids interested in cooking. Here’s how it works. Twenty-four chefs, ages 8 to 13, are selected and put through some cooking tests. Contestants are eliminated (淘汰) two at a time until one is finally named MasterChef Junior.
As the kids complete the challenges, some judges (裁判) taught or helped them. They are Gordon Ramsey, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Elliot.
The young cooks didn’t fear the adult judges. “Gordon, Joe and Graham were all really helpful and really knew about what we were doing,” said Tommy from California. He is a 12-year-old contestant on the show.
The exciting chefs agreed that competing on the show taught them useful lessons. They would remember it forever.

10 . My mother was telling me about how she and her family got their first television when she was a teenager. Of course it was black and white. She said she only watched it at night. She doesn’t remember ever watching it in the morning or afternoon. When I was young, we had only about 3 or 4 different channels. I think they were channel 3, 4, 6, and 9. My brothers and sisters and I would sometimes fight about which channel to watch. But we usually enjoyed the same shows.
Nowadays we can get hundreds of channels on TV. I can’t believe it! There are channels with only old movies, and channels with only cooking, and channels with only fishing. It’s amazing! There is a channel for everything. I wonder how much my brothers and sisters and I would fight if we had hundreds of channels when I was a child. Of course we had only one television set. These days I notice families with 2 or 3 or more television sets in their homes. I guess it stops people from arguing over which channel to choose from.
