Looking for a good summer job? Many different job options are available for teens. Here's a list of some opportunities that are perfect for teens seeking summer employment so you can decide which is the right one for you.
Lifeguard
Working as a lifeguard requires a certificate and must be officially recognized. Options include working for your local recreation center, neighborhood pool or even a water park. It's a great option if you like being outdoors in the sun. The average pay for a lifeguard is $9.60 an hour.
Farm Hand
In more rural areas, teens can find work on local farms. Work can include feeding and caring for farm animals, plowing, planting, harvesting crops, and more. Keep in mind that being a farm hand is hard, physical work. That could be good or bad, depending on who you are. The average pay is $11,58 an hour.
Sports Storekeeper
A sports-related job for teens is keeping scores for youth sports leagues. Generally, teens are paid the minimum wage ($7,25 an hour)for scorekeeping. This is a job that requires your attention at all times to ensure accuracy. Storekeepers also have to deal with coaches from time to time. If you love sports, though, this is a great entry, level job option.
Library Page
If you want a quiet job, being a library page is a good choice. Pages are responsible for sorting and shelving library materials such as books, movies, magazines, and more. The average pay for a library page is an hour. If you are looking for a job with tons of hours to work, this might not be the best option. Typical page jobs oiler 12-15 hours a week.

On a hot July day in Fairfax, Virginia, the couple team Christopher Pei and Zhang Guifeng are training their students while observing their emotions before their USA Wushu Kungfu Federation National Team Trials (选拔赛).
“They are so nervous because they are experiencing competition anxiety," says Pei, co — founder of US Wushu Academy. "The anxiety allows me only an hour of sleep every night during the competition.”
Wushu is a sport that combines elements of performance and martial arts. The USAWKF National Team Trials happen every two years. Coaches and students get up at 7 am each day to practice for the trials. For 30 years Pei and Zhang have been working in Wushu education.
Pei, who is in his 60s, moved to the United States from China with his family in 1972. “When we moved to Vestal, New York, I did not know any English and started learning English from alphabets," Pei says. "So I figured it might be a better idea to start learning Wushu in case I got into a fight and could protect myself." He later realized Wushu is composed of two Chinese characters, "zhi" (it) and "ge" (戈) which means to stop fighting.
The couple opened (heir first academy in Virginia in 1988. Students start as kindergartners and many continue all the way to college.
Chinese culture emphasizes mastering both literacy and martial arts in order to become a complete person. Zhang believes Wushu helps youth develop concentration because its two main principles include focus and respect. "Many parents who grew up in the U.S. as second- or third-generation Chinese need their children to not only learn traditional Chinese culture but also the correct way to become a better person," Pei says.
They devote six days of the week to Wushu education. Sunday is the only day when their attention is not on their students. ''Learning Wushu is difficult, Pei says. "But the students don't easily give up.”

When you look in the mirror, you see yourself. That puts you in the company of animals like dolphins, elephants and chimpanzees. The mirror test is often used as a way of measuring whether animals have self-awareness. And an animal that is aware of itself has a high level of intelligence. Now, a species of fish — the cleaner wrasse — has also spotted its reflection.
Alex Jordan, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, is one of the researchers of the study on cleaner wrasse consciousness. He and his team conducted many tests that show the fish does seem to recognize its reflection — when the researchers added a colored mark to its body, the fish would even, to remove the mark upon catching sight of it in the mirror. It seems to indicate the clever fish species has some sense of self or individuality.
But Jordan said, “I’m the last to say that the cleaner wrasse fish is as smart as chimpanzees.” Instead, he believes that the measure scientists have used for nearly 50 years is imperfect.
One problem with the test, for example, is that it uses vision to measure self-awareness. Yet not all animals rely on sight to recognize themselves. It may well be that a bat, for example, which depends on sonar to get around, is self-conscious. Elephants, while able to pass the mirror test, rely more heavily on smell than on sight.
Consciousness in humans or animals is not easy to measure or understand. Philosophers and scientists have long wrestled with the questions of how a sense of self is assessed, and how it relates to physical processes. Jordan believes the cleaner wrasse is self-cognizant, but not the same extent as a human. This means scientists need to reconsider whether some concepts centered on humans can be used in understanding animals.

Teenagers who check social media for several hours a day are at the risk of developing ADHD, a study has concluded.
The research team, from the University of Southern California, tracked 2,600 teenagers aged 15 and 16. They asked them how many times they checked their phones and other digital devices for various reasons, and then monitored them for symptoms of ADHD. After two years, those who had checked their phones the most often were twice as likely as those who cheeked the least often to show signs of ADHD.
Writing in the JAMA medical journal, the scientists said, “Modern media devices immediately inform users when new text messages, social media postings, or video game play invitations arrive. Exposure to such information may draw attention away from important tasks. Frequent distraction could interrupt the development of constant attention and organization skills.”
They believe constant access to instant entertainment also has an impact. Researcher Professor Adam Leventhal said all previous researches had focused on the link between ADHD and televisions. "What's new is that previous studies on this topic were done many years ago, when social media, mobile phones, tablets and mobile apps didn't exist. We can say with confidence that teens who are exposed to higher levels of digital media are significantly more likely to develop ADHD symptoms in the future, he said.
Leventhal believes the findings help fill a gap in understanding how new mobile media devices and seemingly limitless content pose a mental health risk for children. And the findings serve as a warning.
British scientists welcomed the findings. But Professor Andy Przybylski of the Oxford Internet Institute said, “The study relies on survey responses provided by the students in question. It is not clear if teachers or parents would rate the children similarly or if the self-reported measure of digital screen use is related with either actual behavior or higher quality survey items.”
12. How did the researchers conduct the study?A.By monitoring 2,600 teenagers with ADHD. |
B.By controlling different teens, time spent on social media. |
C.By tracking the participants for two years. |
D.By analyzing data from previous researches online. |
A.It will cause diverse ADHD symptoms. | B.It will create higher ADHD risks. |
C.It will weaken teenagers' confidence. | D.It will have a major influence on organization skills. |
A.It provides a better understanding of the media. | B.It should have focused on parents' responses. |
C.Its findings are not reliable enough. | D.It's a breakthrough in this field. |
A.The use of digital media is on the rise |
B.Teens' exposure to modern media calls more attention |
C.Heavy use of social media may increase Teens' ADHD risks |
D.Teens are increasingly exposed to ADHD |
How to become a more generous person
We often associate generosity with money. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Generosity is all about giving and you can give your time, attention and love as well as money.
Be generous to yourself.
Before you can become generous to others, you need to learn to be generous to yourself. You need to take good care of yourself and your needs. Be generous at giving yourself time to relax or enjoy a hobby. Don’t hesitate to spend money on your health and well-being.
Start by giving a little (and not giving money).
One of the smallest and cheapest things you can give to others is your smile.
Reflect frequently on what you have in life.
Greed is a desire to acquire more than what one needs or deserves.
If you make a donation to a food bank, then imagine happy faces of children who see tasty treats at their table. Think about how happy your kids will be if you give them a full day of your undivided attention and time.
A.Are you ready to become a more generous person? |
B.Imagine how your gift will change somebody’s life. |
C.Above all, acknowledge your importance in this world. |
D.Giving money to charity is a common form of generosity. |
E.So start to be generous by smiling at everybody at least for a day. |
F.But they feel that their life is more meaningful and they will also help. |
G.Make a habit of thinking how much you already have and be grateful for it. |
