I applied to be a first-grade teacher’s assistant. The job paid the lowest wage, and I could hardly afford to pay my rent. I had no desire to go into education, so I didn’t know why I was attracted to this position. Working with children was not my motivation at that time. But later I found that it was all I wanted to do.
There was a student, Ashley, in my class who was very creative and interested in writ-ing. I helped Ashley write her first short story. Ashley and her mother Shirin walked into our classroom every morning. Shirin often volunteered to work in our classroom and would always give me a hug. She asked me questions about her daughter and my writing. At that time, I was working on a new romantic comedy script, and Shirin gave positive comments when I told her the plot.“I can’t wait to see this in the theater!” My confidence increased. I would also exchange some ideas with her. We became very good friends. Shirin also showered me with gifts. For holidays or my birthday, she’d get me some nice gifts. She was always finding ways to wrap me in love and encouragement.
I had worked as a teacher’s assistant for three years. Then I decided to start teaching cre-ative writing. Shirin and I had stayed close, and she kept encouraging me. I was forever grateful that I became a teacher’s assistant and met Shirin. She appeared in my life at just the right time.

If you’ve ever eaten a free doughnut (甜甜圈) on the first Friday in June, you’ve celebrated the Doughnut Lassies- whether you realized it or not, National Doughnut Day was established to honor the Salvation Army volunteers who fried sugary snacks for World War I soldiers on the front line.
When the US entered World War I in 1917, the Salvation Army, a charity organization, sent about 250 volunteers (who were mostly women) to France, where the American army was stationed. The plan was to bring treats and supplies as close to the front line as possible. But the closer the volunteers got to the action, the fewer resources they could access.
Margaret Sheldon and Helen Purviance were credited with bringing doughnuts to the Wester Front. They had a handful of ingredients, including flour, sugar, animal fats, baking powder and canned milk. Doughnuts were one of the few sweet foods they could make without an oven, and once they had a fire hot enough to heat the oil, they could fry them up fast. The women had the pan to cook them in, but for other parts, they had to get creative. For example, grape juice bottles became rolling pins (擀面杖) when necessary.
Sheldon and Purviance’s pan could fit seven doughnuts at a time, and on day one, they made just 150 doughnuts for the group of 800 men. The soldiers even fought over a doughnut. Then they made some changes to their operation, and eventually made 5,000 doughnuts a day. The snacks were so popular that the volunteers earned the nickname “ Doughnut Lassies”, while the soldiers they served were nicknamed “Doughboys”.
The Doughnut Lassies’ impact didn’t end with World War I. The American soldiers’ experiences overseas made doughnuts a commonly eaten food for them back home.

B.They were confused. |
C.They became a bit angry. |
D.They were greatly encouraged. |
A.Doughnuts were more popular out of the US. |
B.The American soldiers got tired of doughnuts. |
C.The Doughnut Lassies’ impact didn’t last long. |
D.Doughnuts became popular in the US after the war. |
A college degree is helpful for many practical reasons, ranging from your increased competitiveness to the increased likeliness that you’ll be promoted within your job. However, people think little of the degree of personal growth that they’ll experience as they’re working through their degrees. Even simple tasks like bill payments are made easier when you can properly track what is due and when.
Of course, on a larger level, the sort of personal development you’ll experience will large-ly be related to overcoming difficulties. College requires that you overcome one challenge after another, ranging from learning courses to passing tests or completing projects. You’ll need to be not only intelligent but disciplined in order to complete your schooling. These traits(特质)are often developed slowly throughout college. As you learn how to better respond to stress and difficulties, you’ll slowly find that you’re better able to deal with difficulties in a number of situations.

Since it was the first day of my high school, I rushed towards my bus stop to catch the bus to school. However, to my horror, I realized that my wallet was missing. I had no money to buy a ticket and no way of making any contact either. I felt worried and began to panic as I knew I couldn’t make it to school without the bus.
I sat on the bench, opened my backpack and found everything in it, but still couldn’t find my wallet. As the bus arrived, I was anxiously packing up all the things on the ground, feeling helpless and defeated. All of a sudden, a lady dressed in a gray dress crouched down and asked if I needed help. After learning my situation, she kindly reached out and handed me the change I needed for the bus. I repeatedly expressed my gratitude to the lady.
As I boarded the bus, I managed to get a seat and tried to gather my thoughts. It was then that I noticed the lady struggling to get on the bus. She was trying to carry a huge suitcase but it was too heavy and she just couldn’t manage it alone. I decided to lend her a helping hand, and together, we successfully carried her suitcase into the bus. I couldn’t help but curiously asked her, “May I ask what are in this suitcase?” She smiled mysteriously and said, “They are gifts!” I laughed in surprise and said, “That must be great! ”
Soon, I reached my bus station. As I made my way towards my school, I noticed the lady slowly walking behind me. Considering that day was my first day of school, I didn’t want to be late and leave a bad impression on my classmates and teachers. I simply said farewells to the lady and wished her a beautiful day, and then rushed to school with my backpack.
